I have 2 hidden folders in my Users directory

I have 2 hidden folders in my Users directory.  I am unable to access them through the terminal.  Can someone tell me why I have hidden folders in my users directory and how I could look at what's inside them?  Could they be safely deleted?

If they are hidden then they are probably there for a reason not to be messed with. Deleting them may cause system errors. If you would really like to view what is inside them, you can download a free application that would let you view them.
Houdini works great for me.

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Move Users Directory

I'm currently running out of hard disk space and would like to keep the existing internal hard drive intact for software. I've purchased an external drive that I plan to have on when the computer powers on. I called Apple support and they didn't have any solutions to move my Users directory to another volume. They told me it wasn't possible. Their solution to my problem was to just add an external drive and just randomly move data to it whenever my main hard disk gets full. This is messy and a very windows-like solution and will make migrating to a new mac painful. Not very happy I paid for Applecare and found better support from Google, but I digress. I came here for real support.
I've found a number of guides, but none were up to date on this topic and were for 10.5 or earlier. I'm currently running 10.6. I know the main steps but wanted to verify the proper flags for ditto.
    1. Setup and format new disk, mount it to /Volumes/newdisk
    2. copy data (this is where I get a little confused due to different guides.
    ditto -V /Users/username /Volumes/newdisk/Users/username
    3. In the system preferences, visit accounts, control + click the username and edit the home directory field with /Volumes/newdisk/Users/username
    4. logout / login
Does this sound like a sane solution?
According to the ditto manpage the --rsrcFork has been depreciated to --rsrc and is the default behavior, grabbing all meta-data. The -V flag just verboses everything.
    Thanks for your help!

What you plan should work, though as Kappy says CCC would be an easier way to do the copy. However, the reason that Apple support recommended against this is that it makes things needlessly complicated. If you have problems down the line and need assistance, it's almost a guarantee that the first thing you'll hear when you describe your setup is "Oh, try moving your user folder back to the boot drive and see if the problem goes away."
Instead, make a plan as to what data you want to store on the external drive and just move that data there. For example, video, audio and photo files are typically large and can be moved to the external drive without moving the entire user folder. This keeps things simple and allows you to potentially move that hard drive to another computer without compromising the integrity of your iMac, among other potential advantages.

    Hi everybody !
I am a third year informatics learner, I am from Switzerland, an my mother tongue is french.
Now, am I searching for exporting the help (man) of the Terminal. In this last, the man occurs only for specified commands, or only some pages.
But I would like to export this Man (as in preview, or in pdf), to have it all.
Desperating of making this with Linux, I tried this with OS X mountain lion.
My last attempt was to type in the Terminal:
    manpath
it answered to me that it was in /usr/shared/Man
And I have shown the hidden folders and files, but: unfindable; I go in ./utilisateurs/partagé/ , there is no visible Man.
Could someone help me, please ?

  • Hidden folders in Explore tab

    Hi,
Since upgrading to version 11.1.2.1, all Financial Reports and books that were existing in the Root directory are showing as Hidden when a user logs into Workspace. In order to see the folders/reports under the default directory (Root), we have to check the "Show Hidden" option in the View menu.
Recently, when we were trying to create a Scheduled Batch in EPMA, an admin user was not able to see any of the hidden folders when trying to select the batch file. Does anyone know how to make the report directories not hidden, so we don't have an issue with the batches? We did not have this problem in the previous version (11.1.2.0).
Thanks in advance for any help!

There are patches for 11.1.2.1 release. Please check the patches and downloads option in my oracle support. There will be patches for Foundation and FR.\
The latest for FR is Patch 13558484: Patch Set Update: 11.1.2.1.118 for Oracle Hyperion Financial Reporting
Foundation:Patch 13704010: Patch Set Update: 11.1.2.1.119 for Oracle Hyperion Reporting and Analysis for Foundation
Again I am not sure whether this will resolve or not...but just a suggestion.

  • Hidden folders and files with random character filenames

You could try media info to see if that tells you any different - be sure to decline the stupid addons included
    https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Recently I noticed several hidden folders with random character names and each of those folders has 5 files in them with randomly named files. These are tiff, png, bmp, and docx files. I copied the folder to virtual machine removed from the network to inspect them, but they can not be opened as it says files appears damaged or corrupt. They appear to be benign as I ran two full system virus scans (including malwarebytes), but really bothers me how they got there in the first place. The owner says local administrators. They were found on the root of the C: drive and in documents, pictures, music, and video of the user profile. I attached a picture to help understand what they look. They are different than other examples I have seen when I attempted to google my answer. Thanks in advance!

  • Catalog Tree doesn't show hidden folders

    Hi,
I have set some folders in the presentation catalog to 'hidden' to hide from all users but for some roles Administrators & Authors I have permissioned the 'Show hidden items' privilege so they can see the folders. Both the Administrators & Authors can create new Analysis & dashboard prompts and see the hidden folders. However when i create a new dashboard and attempt to add content the hidden folders are not shown in the Catalog tree on the left hand side when in edit dashboard mode.
    Is this an known issue?
    Any help would be great
    Regards
    Adrian

    Hi Veeravalli
I have tested it for an Administrator user and an Author user and the same issue applies (i.e. can't see the hidden folders in the catalog tree in dashboard edit mode)
    I'm running 11.1.1.6.1 on Linux 64
    Thanks

  • Browse other time machine disks and hidden folders

I recently did a clean install of Snow Leopard, and used the "Browse other Time Machine disks" option to restore my documents from my backup. Now, however, I want to restore a folder that resides in the hidden /usr, and can't figure out how to do so. Normally, the solution would be to open a Finder window go use Go > Go to Folder and type the path to the folder, then enter Time Machine. However, when using Browse for other disks, once it enters Time Machine, it resets the Finder window to Macintosh HD. Does anybody know how to restore hidden folders from a Time Machine backup on another disk (from a different installation of Mac OS X)? Thanks

it should not reset the finder window when you enter TM. open a /usr in finder. enter commandshiftg and enter /user in popup. this will open /usr in a separate window. enter TM from that window. provided you did not exclude system files from backups you'll see past backups of /usr and the view will not reset. if you did exclude system files from backups then the view will reset.

  • Stop hidden folders appearing in Templates (ie File:New... dialog)

    Hi All,
I have a sinking feeling that I'm going to be sweet out of luck on this one, but it's worth a shot...
We currently have two versioned folders for our company's reuse library (one in user.lib and one in instr.lib) so that things nicely appear on palettes without the need for 3rd party software etc. To complement this, today I was thinking that those VIT files we have could be even better placed in the Templates folder of LabVIEW so that when we go to File->New... we would be able to see our various company templates, etc....
However, when I tried this, the hidden folders etc that Subversion leaves also appear in the templates dialog so I end up seeing something simliar to this (there is only one VI, called "Wizard Dialog.vit" in the new templates folder right now):
    From Templates
    |-<Company Name>
    |     |-.svn
    |     |     |-prop-base
    |     |     |     |-Wizard Dialog.vit.svn-base
    |     |     |-text-base
    |     |     |     |-Wizard Dialog
    |     |     |-tmp
    |     |-Wizard Dialog
    |-DAQ
    |-Frameworks
    |-etc
Is there anyway to stop LabVIEW from showing the hidden Subversion files? (I tried turning on the setting to use _svn folders instead of .svn but got the same result)

    Here's the background:
Some of the issues that we have had with our reusable elements in the past is
    1. Ensuring that the various developers get the updates (ideally as automatic as possible)
    2. Ensuring that the process for creating new reuse elements and updating existing is as streamlined as possible. In particular, an earlier process required that each template, etc be manually reviewed by a panel. Whilst this sounds good on paper, what was happening was that the review board would often get busy and things just wouldn't happen.
We therefore wanted to look at other options for allowing more creative freedom to the various engineers that could keep the reuse library alive. It was thought that a versioned location in user.lib, instr.lib and templates would allow any of the engineers (of which almost all are at least CLD) to contribute, whilst retaining change history etc. In addition, developers can choose to use something like CommitMonitor to automatically keep their reuse library up to date (helping address #1).
With the user.lib and instr.lib locations, this has been working like a charm and the Templates folder was the next target on the list for the expansion as some reuse elements are designed to be customized, and needed to be more of a complete VI than a Merge VI (e.g. a dialog box requires controls to be specifically located as well as block diagram code). It was at this point that I tried creating a versioned sub-fodler within Templates, found the issue, and came here.

  • Excluding hidden folders (eg. trash) from Backup

I use the Mac OS X 'Backup' application to perform backups. I have configured it to back up my entire home directory 'matt', and then excluded some folders. However, Backup does not allow me to exclude hidden folders such as 'Trash'. Is there any way around this?
    Matt

but then I've got to remember to add any new folders I create to the backup, which isn't ideal.
That only applies if you are creating new folders in the root of your Home directory. As a rule of thumb, I create all new folders inside ~/Documents or /Users/Shared. If you add sub-folders, they will automatically be included.
I agree that Backup is quite limited in some ways... but I have struggled to find anything else that has proper incremental backup facilities to DVD/CD's that is also free. (I know I pay for MobileMe... but that is a sunk cost, which I would have anyway).

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • Sharing folders for 2 users on the same mac

    Hey
I have a Vista Virtual Machine (VM) created in VMware fusion and it is stored on a partition on my Bay 2 HDD in my mac pro. it all runs fine when i log in since i am the admin on the box.
I created a Standard user account for my wife. I want my wife to open up VMware Fusion and launch the Vista VM as she pleases to do her work under her account. So i went to sharing in system preferances and selected the folder that contains the VM in "Shared folders" and under "Users" i gave her account read & write permissions. When i log in as my wife and try to launch the VM it says she does not have permissions. I can browse to the folder without any issues. I get the same message if i were to double click the VM also.
I then logged in as the admin and gave her account admin privileges to see if that will fix the issue. when i log in under her account i still get don't have permissions. If she has admin privileges should't she able to have access to any folder on my mac?
The goal is to leave my VM on my Bay2 HDD and have both of us launch Vista VM using VMware fusion successfully from this location under both our accounts
What am i doing wrong here?
    Thanks
    Rpk

Admin permissions does not give you blanket rights to any file. It only gives you the ability to give yourself permission to access a file.
doogald is correct to observe that you have to give your wife permission to read and write to the files inside the folder, and not just read and write permissions on the folder itself. In addition, if your wife doesn't have at least read permission on the folders in which the VM folder is contained, all the way up to the root folder, then she may continue to have problems.
If VM Fusion will allow this, it might be best to move the folder which contains the VM to /Users/Shared. You will still need to ensure that your wife has read and write permission for the folder +and its contents+ but the purpose of /Users/Shared is to share files and folders. This way you won't need to manipulate your permissions beyond making sure the shared folders and files themselves are read-writable by you and your wife.
