You should always use beta test versions with a new and separate profile and keep the regular release so you can use that version in case of problems.

Firefox 4.0b1 is the first of the beta test release versions and still has a lot of bugs.
Such releases are meant for testing only so if bugs are found then they can get reported and fixed before the final 4.0 version gets released.
If you do not have experience with such test releases then you are better of with the latest Firefox 3.6.6 release.

I have recently returned to Firefox after a long absence. The reason I stopped using it in the first place is that every time I got all the add-ons that I wanted, there would be a new update and I'd lose some or all of them and I wasn't interested in having some/all of my useful functions disabled until who knows when or forever.

Yes, during the update there is a list of add ons that come up that will not be added when you update. You can cancel the update if it lists one that you do not want to no longer use.

Why is firefox add ons saying that I need to upgrade to 3.6 or 4.0 when I have 4.0 and I have checked it and verified that it was properly downloaded and installed?

The problem is very simple. As soon as I downloaded Firefox 4.0 I lost my add-ons. The add-ons were the reason I have been using Firefox for several years. This seems to be ludicrous. The new version should be able to manage integration of existing add-ons or the Firefox team should have provided the add-on authors with advance technical information before releasing 4.0 to the world.

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

Firefox keeps telling me to upgrade. Even after complete uninstall and installing the newest version. Also, each time I restart my desktop I have to acknowledge about 12 add-ons. After that all works fine. Even when I restart Firefox.

You posted your troubleshooting information in another thread ([[/questions/907656]]) that seems to indicate that you use or have used that profile folder with a lot of Firefox versions and are overriding the compatibility check (extensions.checkCompatibility.12.0).
You need to use a separate profile for each Firefox version if you want to use multiple Firefox versions.

I use Google chrome and for no reason all my add-ons will not load.

Yesterday AM when I logged onto my laptop and opened Google home page, none of my add-ons (gadgets) would load. This has gone on for 2 days now.
I have rebooted, checked to make sure the site was listed as safe for add-ons and checked settings. Nothing has worked so far. Also when I clicked on "change google themes" there was no response.

I believe there is one extensions in the add-ons gallery that lets you see whether your add-ons are compatible with newer versions of Firefox. But you'll have to search for them, since I don't know how it's called.
I will remind you that if you want an add-on to be compatible with a newer version of Firefox, you need to contact its author.
Also, the version of Firefox you are using at the moment has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems. But having suggested Firefox to many of my clients (I owned a Computer Sales and Service (STORE - not a basement operation) for over 15 yrs and even on our New Computers, FIREFOX is what we installed and recommended! Many of my old clients now (Had to close the business last year due to a number of factors) call me at home and are asking me the same question. Why wont my ADD-ONS work with Firefox. I know Kaspersky was another product we sold a lot of, so their password managers are no longer working properly. More specifically their AUTO FILL function will not load when a new web page is loaded, thus the person can not access their bank acct, etc ... as they were dependent on Kaspersky to do all the remembering for them!
