I have 8 gb ram, os x 10.7.3 only sees 2 gb.

For some reason my mac pro does not see the 8 gb of ram that I have installed. I have been using this machine for over 5 years with no issues. Lately the hard disk has been thrashing a lot, and I finally figured out that the ram is not being used by the computer.
How do I test the ram? How do I make sure everythign is correct with my install? I have taken the ram out and reseated it. Still no joy. Is it possible for ram to stop working?
I have 8 2gb ram sticks installed, but the mac only sees 2. How can the other 6 break?

Try reseating the ram.
Blow out any accumulated dust.
Run AHT and/or Rember which is a tool to specifically test ram.  Its a GUI layer on top of memtest.
Also check to see if any dialgnostic leds are lit near the dimm slots which may indicate that slot or dimm has a problem.  Ignore the momentary blink when you boot the machine.

  • I have 8GB Ram in 1st DIMM slot... can i add another in 2nd slot?

i have ordered a HP Evny 700-310xt with windows 8.1
I opted to have 8ram in one Dimm slot instead of 4ram in two slots....
I had hoped to get another 8ram module to put in the 2nd slot when my pc arrives...so i will have 16 ram, but i have a hard time to find out where i can get original parts from HP. I tried th parts store at HP no luck. I don't want to throw the 8ram away that comes with the machine and by two more ....... i want to keep the 8ram that comes with it...and add a single 8ram module.
"The part number for my 8GB memory module  is part number 698651-154"
do i have to use the same exact manufacturer part?
    thanks so much in advance

    Hi,
Yes, you can add 1 piece of 8Gb to the second slot to make 16Gb as mentioned:
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=au&lc=en&docname=c04344813
You can use other RAM with SAME specs but using same RAM is much better in terms of peace of mind. HP RAM may be a bit more expensive.

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

  • Are there suggestions for managing Multiple VMWare Fusion systems sharing files with a MacBook?  Suppose I have enough ram for 3 servers to share files.

Suppose I have enough ram for 2 or three VMWare fusion systems to that could benefit from file sharing.  Is it possible to configiure each VMWare funsion instance to have a common read only file share on my desktop and a common read/write area on on my desktop?
This would allow me to extend the power and mustle of my Mac Book Air, Retina Display system to its best advantage.  Whether native Mac processing or speciality linux or Windows systems as needed.
I am having trouble allowing more than one system to share the same read only and the same read/write areas so that software does the file locking and merge controls.  Even if these do not share a common read/write area, it would be truly handy for drive space management for them to share a common read only area.
    Thanks for your thoughtful input.

It really denpends on the os running in the vm and what the permissions are set to on those shares.
I run a few vms on both a mac at home and windows at work and all other computers in my home or at work can connect to the vms without any problems. Even multiple computer at the same time.
It also depends on how you have set the vm up for networking. If you are setting it up as nat, instead of bridged, that can also cause problems access it from multiple system. With nat the vm is on its own network branch.

I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Should i quit application to have better ram memory?

should i quit application to have better ram memory and a better performance or on 10.4.2 or is that ok to close the windows but not quit the programs...
    thank you
    hubert

Mac OS X tries to optimize performance by caching a whole lotta stuff. What that means is that if you quit a program, you might not necessarily get all that RAM back right away because OS X will keep some of the data around in case you use that app again soon. This is not necessarily a problem because the flip side is also true: if you launch a program and don't do anything with it, other programs will be able to use memory that the first program originally wanted to reserve. It is all very fluid and complicated and the best thing to do is to do what you want and let OS X do what it wants.
The advantage to closing windows and programs is not so much for memory management but to boost performance a little. The less the machine has to keep track of and redraw and manage, the faster it can do whatever you're trying to concentrate on.
To me it boils down to this: If you're going to use an app again soon, leave it open (I leave Mail and Safari open all the time). If you're not going to use an app soon, close it. All the rest you can leave up to the sophisticated workings of OS X memory management, which are really not worth second guessing unless you are a very smart engineer.

  • RI bought CS 6 in May 2014. I have an HP computer that was purchased in May 2013, but it is a 32 bit computer.I cannot currently use PS as it says I do not have enough RAM.

chased 8 GB of Ram and the computer only sees 4 GB. Is this enough to run PS? I was sent a disk to upgrade the computer to 64 bits, but I will have to re-install everything I guess including PS. Is there any other way around this?

On a 32 bit system, no app can use more than 2-3 GB of RAM. That's why 64 bit was invented, to get over this.
Still, the message is weird because Photoshop should run. There's probably something else wrong.

i need some help i have just got the Mac OS X as i have recently been given a mac with 1.83 GHz Intel core 2 duo and on 10.4.11. However it says i dont have enough ram how can i solve this?

Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find. Patriot is another brand recommended by ASC contributors but I have no experience with them.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales.

I have a Mac OS X v 10.4.11 and trying to upgrade to snow leopard but it says I don't have enough RAM, what do I do?

What machine are you running on?
As far as I recall, Snow Leopard's memory requirements were 1GB of RAM. All Intel-based Macs have shipped with at least that much, so I don't understand how you have a machine that doesn't have enough memory.

    RAM 4GB (3.80GB usable)

    Intel Pentium processor

    Hi;
As Hussein Sawwan mention you have enough RAM but what about CPU? You may try to make installation but if you want to make some test on that VM you probably hit performance issue, its so clear

  • I have ordered RAM chips for my Imac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (2x 4GB) from Other World Computing and they don't work.

I have tried to install on two separate chip orders.  One was the initial order and the other set was the replacement chips.  I followed all the installation instructions Apple has on their site.  I have even watched a few videos to make sure.  I have bought RAM chips before for my Macbook Pro and they work fine.  Am I purchasing the wrong RAM chips?  Here is the type of RAM chips I ordered... 8.0GB (2x4.0GB Kit) PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM 204 Pin CL9 SO-DIMM.

That appears to be the correct dimms:
    204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Whether yours follow any additional apple requirments is another question.  Was there any mention about apple compatibility from the place you bought them?
If they aren't working they are probably bad or missing some additional apple requirement.  But try reversing them first or using one at a time.
FYI, OWC sells that stuff too (definitely apple compatible).  And if you follow that link you will again see you have the correct specs.

  • Want to upgrade to OS X 10.3.9, do I have enough RAM?

Hello ~ I plan to purchase software to upgrade my OS X from 10.2 to 10.3 (and then update to 10.3.9). Do I have enough RAM with 128 mb to run this effectively? This is an iBook that I bought used, to get by temporarily. Is it worth it to add the extra RAM? If so, would it be an easy do it yourself install?
