I have a 2 year old Imac running OS X 10.5.8.

I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then Lion.  Apple won't help me unless I pay, so hoping someone will help me with this issue.  Very afraid of screwing things up.

Does your iMac have 2GBs of memory and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor?

  • My iMac will not boot up.  I  have a 3 year old iMac running   Lion.  When I push the power button I get the Apple logo, then the circular thing made up of small lines revolving iin a clockwise direction, then a progress bar which never fills in.

The progress bar then disappears and the system never boots up.  How can I get this machine to boot without a start-up disc?
Are there any keyboard shortcuts available?

I think you'll need those grey original install disks as it sounds like your harddrive is corrupted.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

  • We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  My hard drive died and we have a new hard drive now, but all that the fixit shop put on it was the Snow Leopard OS;  can I ask Apple for a download of our other many software programs to reload them?  Does it cost to do

We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  The hard drive died and we had a new hard drive installed.  They only installed the Snow Leopard OS on it, and there were many software programs that came with the iMac originally.. now missing.  Does anyone know whether Apple will resupply these?  I do have an Apple installation disc but have upgraded from the original Leopard to Snow Leopard... so the OS is not quite the same.  Ideas?  Thanks!

No bootable bakup/clone or Time Machine backup? No initial install discs? If no to both of those, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and request replacement discs for that machine. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.

  • What makes a ten year old iMac run slow?

what makes a 8 year old iMac run slow? Its 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo processor Memory 2gb 667 mhx ddr2 sdram

What Mac OS are you running?
See if any of these items apply:
    1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
    2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications?
    3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
    4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
    5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?
    6) Did your financial institution ask you to install Trusteer EndPoint Protection (also known as Trusteer Rapport)?
An overly full hard drive can slow things down, too, especially in a computer with only 2GB RAM.

  • 3 year old iMac  running very slow, freezing all the time. Advice?

My three year old iMac - 2.4Ghz processor, 2GB RAM, running Lion - is becoming almost totally useless. For many months it has been very slow, with multiple freezes, and then "force quits" on iPhoto and other applications.
First, I tried to free up some space - i now have about 44GB free. Then I ran disk utility etc, Then I ugraded to Lion.
But still I'm getting the same problems. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your problems are more serious than a 'hardware upgrade' issue. My late 2008 MacBook 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM runs applications (and iPhoto) fine. In addition I have run OS X operating systems with little more than 5GB free hard drive space with no issue (being able to run advanced applications like Photoshop).
My advice- if you have simply upgraded to Lion keeping all your systems settings and files intact then you may want to perform a 'clean install', you'll backup your important data/files in order to transfer them back again into Lion. You could even create a Time Machine Backup and use this to move only your data and applications back into your clean install of OS X Lion.

  • I have a 5 year old Imac. it does not pick up the wireless internet signal in the same location that my new laptop does. Is there anything I can do to it to fix that?

I have a five year old Imc that does not pick up a wireless signal in the same area that my laptop does - is that just because it is old? Is there a card widget I could add to the IMac?

    Hello,
Do any black bars show on the Airport icon at all?
I have a 2007 iMac that can barely see my Base Station 4 feet away, an older eMac 7 feet away sees it great!
On my iMac I use one of these...

And a USB extension cable can give  even better range/speed.

  • 5 year old Imac running Snow Leopard with Boot camp.

My IMac will not boot up when I turn on?
The grey apple logo screen and Apple Jingle occurs but I get no desktop or Finder Window and the computer turns off after about 5 minutes of trying to start up.
I inserted Snow Leopard Start Up Disk and tried running Disk Utility - however the Internal Hard Drive is not accesible and shows as being unmounted.
Furthermore - there is NO Start up Internal Hard Drive to reinstall the Snow Leopard OS to.I see my External Drive and Boot Camp partition ONLY.
Could this be a  Hard Drive Failure?
However, when I turn the Computer on and Hold the Option key I have no issue booting Windows via Boot Camp and running Windows XP?
What can I do to resolve this?
I would be so greatful for any help to solve this issue.

It looks like your OS X partition is damaged, but not the hard disk. Although your OS X partition is unmounted, you can select it and repair the disk from the Mac OS X DVD. If it doesn't work, you will have to erase the OS X partition and reinstall OS X

  • I am unable to select the correct paper size when printing photo's in iPhoto 11. When I select the paper size in the custom window for 4x6 prints the prints only appear on an 8 1/2x11 page. My Mac is a year old iMac running 10.8.2.

I am unable to print 4x6 photo's using iPhoto 11. When I do they only print out on lettter size paper even though I enter 4x6 in the custom window in the print size menu. My older Snow Leopard system using iPhoto 9 the paper size window offered a 4x6 paper size which worked well.

Selecting paper size in the first sreen tellis iPhoto what papery you are going to use - it does not tell the printer what paper to use - printer specific options on on the last (second or third if you customize the print) screen where you tell the print any specifics like paper source (typically printers need to you tell them where a specific paper is loaded - they do not really know the sizes in each paper tray)

  • Will Mountain Lion work on my 4 year old iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo   Processor Speed:     2.66 GHz

Will Mountain Lion work on my 4 year old iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 2.66 gHz.
Really do not want to load it and find there are issues.
Oh I really not a big tech guy I just want everything to work well.
And I'm just about to purchase a Mac Book Pro as well.
Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated
    Cheers

I also have a 4 year old iMac 24". it is the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo. I have been running Mountain Lion since it was released, and before that Lion. Runs great. Over the last month I have noticed some slow data transfers from a USB harddrive. But not enough to do any research. I use a USB harddrive for my Time Machine backup and notice no problems or slow transfers while the Time Machine backup runs. My iTunes has its nedia files on a USB harddrive and is used to watch videos, play music and share photos on the AppleTV. I also use Aperture on the iMac to store and manage 20,000 photos.
I have 6 GB of ram, 4GB and 2GB memory sticks. I know it is best to have identical ram sticks but my iMac model cannot run 8GB of ram and I feel 6GB is better than 4GB.
Mountain Lion is a great OS and I am glad I upgraded. It works great with the AppleTV (no airplay but iTunes on the iMac serves up all our music, photos and videos), iPhone, and iPod Touch. Also with my wifes brand new Macbook Pro. All the devices including the iMac can share data on iCloud.

  • Updating LR1 to LR3 - is it worth it on a 4 year old iMac?!

    Hi,
Please can anyone offer some advice.
I currently have Lightroom 1.4. I have a 4 year old iMac (2.16 Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo) running OSX 10.4.11 with 1 gb ram. Everything still runs quickly touch wood (apart from LR which can be a little sluggish when dealing with lots of images).
With Photoshop I've always tried to upgrade every other version and intended to do the same with LR.
However, in order to upgrade to LR3, I would also need to boost my memory to 2gb and update to Leopard or Snow Leopard.
It would become quite an expensive upgrade which I'd accept if I thought it would be worth it.
My fear is that loading more memory intensive programmes onto an older Apple will ultimately just slow my machine down. I tried this some years ago on my first iMac, updating to Panther and adding more memory. But it slowed my machine down to a crawl.
I wonder whether I'd be better just opting for an old upgrade copy of LR2 and stick with what I have.

    Hi Butch,
Thank you very much for your help. Strong case you put forward!
Just wondering, if your iMac is about the same age, have you noticed any slowing down at all since updating everything? Do you find LR3 with Snow Leopard runs quicker on your iMac than LR1 did with 10.4?
    Thanks again.
    Best wishes.
I find it runs quicker and more responsive for most tasks ... but LR3 adds some new features that that use more computing power, while it isn't what I would consider slow, it didn't increase speed dramatically though it is very stable and consistent ... I've had no crashes or problems and LR3 runs as well as LR2.6 did for me.
I should also note that my catalog is on the startup drive, my image files are on external FW800 drives. I think this helps keep things flowi smoothly. I also try to keep the use of too many other apps to a minimum when I am working a high volume shoot in LR, like a large event or wedding ... this keeps as many resources available to LR as possible.
On the other hand, PSCS5 64 bit on 10.6 flies compared to PSCS3 on 10.4.

  • Seven year old iMac connection to cable

I have a seven year old iMac. A friend would like it for her son, who has no computer but would like to connect to Optimum online. Is that possible considering the age of the computer?

Shouldn't be a problem if the Optimum Online modem is an Ethernet modem - connected to a computer via an Ethernet connection which the modem should be.
Apple included an Ethernet port on Macs before the majority of users knew what it was for and well before PC manufacturer's followed suit.
Is OS X installed on this iMac and if so, which version? It shouldn't make any difference as long as the Built-in Ethernet network port configuration is active.

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?
