I have a 2004 Mac Mini. Can I convert it to just a a storage drive?

I now have a Mac Book Pro and i want to use my old Mac Mini as a storage device. Has anyone done this?

It is doable, boot the machine holding the T key.  Note it won't be able to boot both the MacBook Pro and itself if you start putting operating system on the Mac Mini to be used.  So if you still desire access to older applications, it probably is best if you did file sharing between the two machines.   Firewire 9 to 6 pin cables let you hook up the newer firewire to the older one.

  • I have a new Mac mini and are using an Acer monitor. Unfortunately, the Acer will not show any image on a startup from cold. It does however work completely correctly when restarting from 'sleep' condition. Can anyone help? Thanks in anticipation.

I have a new Mac mini- changed from Windows XP. I have a peculiar problem. I use an Acer monitorwith the Mac which works fine when the Mac is 'un-sleeped'. But, if I have shutdown the Mac the Acer does  not recognisethe start up - at least it shows nothing on screen. When I have shut down - nowknowing the problem, I use an old Samsung monitor to cope with the start up -it does so fine - and then put the Mac to 'sleep', then change monitors andrestart the Mac - the Acer is now fine. I am using the same cables for theSamsung and the Acer. The Acer had no problems with my old Windows system -from sleep or shut down. I really do not think there is anything wrong with theAcer - could it be some sort of recognition problem? Please can anyone assist.Donald Picton

I posted the same question a day ago with no response. I'm using an Acer x193w. You actually don't have to switch monitors to get it to work. Just make sure you turn off the monitor after shutting down the Mac mini (actually push the power button on the monitor, not just let it go to sleep). If you turn on the monitor (push the power button on the monitor), then power up the Mac mini, the monitor is recognized. The issue didnt exist with Snow Leopard for me. It only started after I started using Lion. Hope this issue gets fixed In a future OS update.

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.
You have 90 days of free telephone support on a new device. You can call them at 1-800-MY-APPLE. Have your Mini's serial number handy
You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    Generally YES.
It's possible to hold separate iTunes library's on a single machine.
Generate two new folders inside the Music folder of the Mini and name them differently; e.g. man and woman.
Copy your whole library into "man" and your wifes into "woman"
Go to sharing in the system settings of the Mini and share the Music folder in your network.
After copying the whole library's to the Mini you may point iTunes to the new location at startup by holding the option key (alt) at the keyboard.
iTunes will then ask you where the library is located.
Point it to the matching library on the Mini.
    That's all.
    Lupunus
PS ... If you both use only the Mini you have to setup a user account for each and just copy the whole library to the Music folder in particular.

  • HT4410 I have a new mac mini, do I have enough space to download Windows 7, and can I just download the software or purchase a disc?

I have a new mac mini, do I have enough space to download Windows 7, and can I do it through online purchase or disc?  My bootcamp assistant mentions using a USB flash drive???

Yes you do have enough storage, you only need let's say 10GB to properly install Windows with a few (very small) programs. You'd be best of just going to a store and buying a Windows 7 install DVD (not an upgrade one!), or using one that you might have laying around at home. You can also purchase Windows 7 via the Microsoft online store and than burn it to a DVD. It is possible that installing from a USB-drive works, but I have not tried this yet.

  • I have a new mac mini I5 - I cannot find and copy Maverick onto a flash so that I can install on the other 7 iMacs - don't want to download from App store to each machine

I have a new mac mini I5 - I cannot find and copy Maverick onto a flash so that I can install on the other 7 iMacs - don't want to download from App store to each machine - files too big
    Please assist

You need to download it on one of the iMacs via App store but not install since after it installs the installation download gets deleted.
After it is downloaded you can copy to a USB device. You can also make a bootable USB install device by:
    downloading and using DiskMaker X

Only with a whole lot of effort and instability.  As the new Minis have
hardware (HD4000, USB 3.0, etc.) that is totally unsupported in old OSes.
The only option would be to see if it would work by installing in a virtual machine
running 10.6.8.  I'm sure there will be some performance hit but whether it would
be enough to be unusable is the question.

Hello, from across the Chesapeake Bay!
Check Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays.
Note Macs do not run iOS, only iPads, iPod Touch, and iPhones do.

  • Mac mini can not find the NAS

In my network I have a Mac mini, AirPort Extreme base station and a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo v2. Everything is connected by cable. The problem is that the Mac mini can not find the NAS. Mac mini is looking for wirelessly connected devices, type TimeCapsule. How do I get my Mac mini to find the NAS and set the NAS as a source of data storage?

I have a ReadyNAS and use it as a Time Machine destination with no problems, even over WiFi. The ReadyNAS and Mac are both on the same LAN (even though the Mac is on WiFi), please check to see if your WiFi is on a different LAN to the Ethernet side of things, I have my Airport set to bridging mode so both sides of the AirPort count as the same LAN.
Next you need to check you have actually configured Time Machine in the ReadyNAS, as shipped it is initially turned off. You need to go to the ReadyNAS web management interface (FrontView) and then click on Backup on the left, and then select Time Machine. You also need to make sure Bonjour is enabled for the ReadyNAS, this is accessed by clicking on Services on the left and then selecting Discovery Services, make sure all the Bonjour options are ticked on.

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

  • 2005 Mac Mini, can this connect this wirelessly to my home network as an iTunes server

I have acquired a 2005 Mac Mini which appears to need direct cable connection to my router to access the internet.  Is there a way around this that  I can modify to access my home network wirelessly so I can use this as a stable location for my itunes library rather than my macbook pro.  The Mac mini is located in a room upstairs but my router is situated in the lounge alongside my Apple TV.  I want to try and get the mac mini to be the storage location for itunes that my apple tv will use.
Would the addition of an airport express or the like be a solution or am I barking up the wrong tree.  Due to the age, is it likely that the mac mini can be used as a mini desktop only rather than as a file server?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as you have probably gathered, I am an apple novice

    Per this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Mini
an internal wifi card was optional.
You need a USN wifi stict that is compatible with your Mac. This one shuld work

    It says:
Supports Windows , ME, 2000, XP, vista , windows 7,MAC OS 10.X, Linux
Just mak sure that what yo get works with OSX 10.4.11 or 10.5.8. Your G4 Mini can only go to 10.5.8

  • Moving a drive with OSX to another computer? take it out of my Mac pro laptop and into my mac mini. can it be done with no OS/Hardware issues?

moving a drive with OSX to another computer? take it out of my Mac pro laptop and into my mac mini. can it be done with no OS/Hardware issues?

When I work with a drive to boot many computers, I use the newest model computer I will be booting, and set the system up on that, run all the Apple updates. Normally I will have no issue booting any older computer with the same drive. Unless of course those older computers do not support the operating system on that drive.
If you want to test if the drive will boot the mac mini. Put your MacBook Pro into target mode. Connect the two computers together. And on the Mac Mini, go into system preferences and then under start up disk and see if the target disk mode computer's drive shows up there. Seelct that drive and restart. See if it boots ok. A bit easier then taking the drives out and moving things around.

  • I have a 2010 mac mini referbished and i dont see the Disk Utilitiy in the Utilities on the install disk. Is that because it is refurbished?

I have a 2010 mac mini referbished and i dont see the Disk Utilitiy in the Utilities on the install disk. Is that because it is refurbished?

The software that comes with your refurbished Mini should be identical to that which comes with a new Mini. Disk Utility should be in Applications > Utilities. Alternatively, choosing Utilities from the Go menu at the top of the finder windownwill take you directly to the Utilities folder.

  • I have a new Mac Mini, and I want to send raw video...

I have a new Mac Mini (Lion), and I want to send raw video to the Internet, using Ustream, Skype or other services. I don't need cameras, microphones, or other periphrals. My video consists of 1 volt composite (from a video switcher), and the audio is full stereo at 600 ohm line level on each channel. What do I need?
I have a video capture card on my Windows machine; but the results have been crappy at best. And the so-called "Geek Squad" at Best Buy (where I bought the Mac Mini) have been less than helpfull. Further, the on-line Apple Store shows nothing. Maybe someone here has an idea.

You are going to need a video capture device of some sort and I believe the following will be suitable.

It is available in the US as well http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product1.en.html
