I have a 2006 iMac. I am trying to hook up a LG external DVD writer. It doesn't appear on the desktop when I hook it up. Any suggestions?

I have replaced the internal DVD/CD drive twice in the last 1 1/2 years. Now when I insert a DVD or CD, it does not appear on the desk top or anywhere else. I can't eject it. I tried everything possible that I could think of. After a few weeks, the CD decided to eject when I started up my computer. I put another DVD in and this time it showed up on the desk top, so I tried to burn something to it and the computer told me there wasn't any device available to do such. Then I could not get it to eject. I tried shutting down the computer and starting it up, and the DVD disappeared off the desk top again. This time I was able to get it to eject sooner. I haven't put anything new in there since! I purchased a third party external DVD writer. When I hooked it up to the computer, nothing appeared on the desk top. I put the software disc in (which is windows, but I wanted to see what it did). It showed up on the desk top and let me open it up. I was able to eject it from the desk top. I then put in a blank CD to record music to. Since there wasn't anything on my computer for the new drive, I tried dragging and dropping the songs onto the CD and it appeared to be burning the CD, but when I put the CD into my stereo, it showed error. Many years ago I had a LaCie external drive because my computer didn't have one and it used Toast which was on my desk top. I thought this one was supposed to just work with iTunes, but I am not sure what I am supposed to do with it. Should the device appear on my desk top when I plug it in? Is there some kind of software that I am supposed to have? I am running version 10.6.8. Thanks!

The external DVD/CD Writer will Not appear on your desktop when you attach it to your iMac. It will appear in "Finder", which is in your Dock.

Thanks for the reply. I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long. After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix. I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

I just downloaded the ios7 successfully (love it) and after putting in a NEW passcode when I went back to the phone, it wouldn't take the passcode I thought I had entered. Phone is disabled, I never backed it up to my computer so it is not recognized, I can't get into it to get the serial number, and the Apple support won't accept the MEID # from the back of the phone so I can get help. I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

There is your problem. DVDs that ship with a Mac are machine specific. You will need to purchase a retail copy of the DVD $29.

It's not just iTunes you need to update...
You need to upgrade to Leopard v10.5.8 at the very least in order to sync, restore, and backup an iPod touch.

The problem I'm facing is that I cannot make any changes to anything because my home folder is no longer found. I can't even reset it to boot from something other than the installed OS (OS X 10.6.80. Thanks, A Brody. Don't know what the PRAM battery is. Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem). The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated. The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be! Does this fit your PRAM battery theory? If so, please explain more. Thanks.

Here's the problem I am trying to research for you...
There does exist a way to add a second monitor via USB:
USB 2.0 to HDMI Audio Video 1080P Adapter for Windows and Macbook
It's the only device I know of that can do that. The problem is that it wants a HDMI connection. So that means a HDMI-to-VGA adapter or converter needs to be found (not VGA-to-HDMI, those are easier to find).

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
To reset the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies. Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems. I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work. I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic. When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones. This actually helped. I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems. I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac. I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed. Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

What is "Adobe XI" - Reader, or Acrobat?
But either way, 'Save as Adobe PDF' is a Word function, independent of what Adobe software you have installed.

If you have a Mac OS 8.x or 9.x CD (depending on the iMac model), look for a Drive Setup utility somewhere on that disc. Boot from the CD while holding down the C key. Initialise the hard disk with a 'Zero all data' option chosen.
