There is your problem. DVDs that ship with a Mac are machine specific. You will need to purchase a retail copy of the DVD $29.

  • Just got back from the Apple Store...optical drive officially dead

I just got back from the Apple Store, which confirmed what I feared all along. I received my MBP C2D over the holidays and was worried when it had trouble booting up several times. After trying to burn a few cds (some would quit, others worked fine), and a few discs that refused to read or eject I visited the boards to find out that issues with the Matshita UJ 587 were widespread. At this point my computer does not even recognize the ATA or Disc Burning hardware or the OSX disc inside. The only positive to come out of this is the customer service offered by Apple. I took the computer to the genius bar and the computer refused to boot up after the tech installed an OSX disc (hence the stuck cd inside). They are giving me a new computer since this one is brand new, but unfortunately I will have to order it from Apple Care since it is a custom job. For all of you out there with early MBP C2D optical drives that are acting up I feel your pain. Get your computer into an Apple store before the problem gets worse, these optical drives are awful.
Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thank you. After 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care this morning they finally confirmed what the Mac Genius told me last night. The computer was shipped back this afternoon and I'll post again if there's any trouble with the new unit, I think I just got a lemon with this one...too bad. This is my first Mac so I'm really trying hard to stay positive.

  • I have a 2007 MacBook 2GHz intel core 2 duo and i want to update to either snow leopard or lion what can ido if i have 10.4 already.

I have a 2007 MacBook 2GHz intel core 2 duo and i want to update to either snow leopard or lion what can ido if i have 10.4 already. please help

You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Hello i just came back from the apple store and they had to restore my phone and i just downloaded all my apps and music back but my photos that are on icloud i only got 80 out of 768 back. what do i do to get all of them back?

hello i just came back from the apple store and they had to restore my phone and i just downloaded all my apps and music back but my photos that are on icloud i only got 80 out of 768 back. what do i do to get all of them back?

If you tried to restore to your iCloud backup and your photos didn't fully restore, first go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and make sure it isn't still in the process of restoring.
If the restore is complete and all your photos weren't restored, all you can do is try restoring the backup again.  You might try the solution posted by ezjules in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19518589#19518589.  This involves opening the photos app after the phone restarts and you provide the passwords for your Apple IDs, then leaving it open for the remainder of the restore process.

What is a error message and what do you see when it appears?
Haven't much problem with Airs around here, since they have a SSD they tend to be more reliable.
Perhaps it was a bad update, have you ran through this list of possible fixes?
Do as many as possible, starting with #1. Until the problem is resolved.
Use the boot 10.6 USB instead of the disk of course.

  • Just got back from the Apple store RE: wifi problems. No fix in sight.

I took my iPad into the Apple store this afternoon because of the wifi issues I've been having. The problem I'm having is that the connection frequently drops and I get a message that says "Incorrect Wifi Password". This has been happening a TON lately and is getting really annoying.
The genius at the Apple store tested my iPad on their network and couldn't replicate the problem. Therefore, he concluded that the iPad is not defective. He talked a lot about router technology and basically said that every other router and network other than what's at the Apple store is old technology, that's why it doesn't work. This is an unacceptable answer. He offered no fix or remedy for the problem.
I asked him if Apple is working on a remedy and he said they are NOT because there is NO PROBLEM.
Judging by what I've read on here and experienced, there IS A PROBLEM APPLE!
Since he was convinced that my device is functioning properly and also that Apple is not going to provide a fix or update to address the wifi issues, I asked about the return policy. He said I WOULD HAVE TO PAY A RESTOCKING FEE BECAUSE MY DEVICE IS NOT DEFECTIVE! <--- can you tell I'm yelling??!!
I asked him to help me understand how a device is not defective that can't function as intended on any network other than an Apple network. He said if my iPad works in the store, it's not defective and I'd have to pay the 10% restocking fee.
This is really really not what I expected from Apple, not at all. Since the Apple genius told me that Apple doesn't recognize that this is a problem, and that Apple is NOT working on a fix for it, I am going to return my device to Best Buy this afternoon.
I'm really not happy about this because I really love this device, but it's just not usable if it keeps dropping connections.
    I'm having a sad Friday.

Good heavens, I can understand why you're having a bad day - and in essence you are absolutely right, if your iPad doesn't work with your network and other devices do, then the iPad is the problem. After all, if you go to Starbucks, a hotel, airport, hotspots provided by cities or any vendors, you can't ask them to replace their routers if you can't connect. It's not your job to resolve infrastructure problems, but it is Apple's to ensure the device is compatible with the infrastructure which exists.
    However:
This is really really not what I expected from Apple, not at all. Since the Apple genius told me that Apple doesn't recognize that this is a problem, and that Apple is NOT working on a fix for it, I am going to return my device to Best Buy this afternoon.
I would urge you not to believe this genius speaks for Apple as an authority on the subject. Even if right at this moment, the more complaints, calls and returns they have for wifi faults, the more they will react to the problem, because they have no choice. What they generally won't do (based on past experience) is announce publicly that there is a problem, but it doesn't mean they are not collecting and reviewing data and researching potential solutions.
So, before you return your iPad - and might face the debate on restocking fees - call Apple and discuss the problem, if necessary escalating the call to the next tier up until you get someone who can help you work through it, or arrange for a timely replacement, or a return without you having to face a penalty. Apple are typically very good in customer service, as the surveys show, but that isn't always the case in the early stages of a fault where the issues are not yet clear.
    Good luck!

  • I had a failure of a dsl modem which inturn destroyed my ethernet port of non isight imac G5.  In attempt to solve the problem I did a clean install of leopard 10.5.4. I am unable to upate to 10.6,.7  or .8 without freezing system network preferences

Dsl modem failure caused malfunction of ethernet port.  In attempt to solve problem I did a clean instillation of  Leopard 10.5.4 and then update to 10.5.5 with access to internet through apple usb to ethernet adapter.  If I attempt to update software to 10.5.6, .7 or .8 it freezes my network system preferences and computer will no longer shut down.  The network connection assistant also no longer sees a connection to the internet throught the usb/ethernet adapter.  I have checked they systerm Tech tool deluxe which shows no problems and also used hard drive utility on instillation disk which found no problems.  Permissions were also checked as well and no problems noted.  Any thoughts as I really like my imac G5.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Brought back click Wheel back from the dead

    Hello forum,
Newbie question from a newbie poster. I have a 40 gig Click Wheel that I had left for dead. I was able to get it working (hopefully not temporarily. My question for any knowledgeable user out there is; I haven't used this iPod since it failed on me 2 years ago and I've purchased a replacement 5th gen since. My desktop does not have the original install any longer for the the Click Wheel. What I want to do is re-install the install CD on a notebook running XP independent of my iPod/iTunes program on my desk top. If I do a fresh install on my notebook, will I be able to get the most current version of the software for my Click Wheel, if available on the support page? I noticed the current version I should be running in the help section and I would think it's more current than the one on the install disk. The other question is for my iTunes. Can I install the current iTunes version and not have to install any previous version? I'm assuming(hoping) that all bugs or fixes from previous upgrades are covered in the new version?
Sorry for the long winded post. I am anxious to get this iPod back to use.

ok, just give you a brief idea.
It used to have 2 software needed to install for the iPod, an iPod Updater and iTunes, but now we can install just one software i.e. iTunes and when we connect our iPod, it tells whether the software is the most update.
Try to download and install the latest version of iTunes here

  • HT201263 I have an iPod touch which will not charge even after staying on cable for days. It shows the red line on battery, and wont do anything else. Any tips for bringing this back from the dead?

I have done everything suggested by Apple. It does not show up in iTunes. It is a model  A1288. It was working fine until the battery ran down. I hate to throw things away.

    After charging overnight
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

You can not setup a new iCloud account using a PC. You must use an Apple device (Mac or iPhone/iPad) to create the account, then sign into it using your PC.

  • I have an iPhone and an iPod touch, and whenever i sync my iPhone, all the apps from the iPod Touch are added on it and vice versa. How can I stop this from happening?

Whenever i try and sync my iPhone, I get all the iPod Touch apps on it then have to maually delete them.

I have the same question, but can you clarify something please.  I have about 10 apps showing in the apps section of iTunes - all of which I am happy to have on my iphone - but NOT on the Touch.
    1.  How do I 'delete' the apps wrongly synched to the Touch, and
    2.  For the future, when I download an app. hor do I ensure it is only synched with the iphone and not the Touch.  I have very space left on the Touch and don't want to clutter it with unwanted apps.
