Okay so there are a few things you can do to bring your MacBook up to speed. You may find, however, that purchasing a new computer will be more cost effective for you.
Adding RAM - this is one place you can get very good value for your money. Max out your MacBook's RAM.
Purchase and install a larger hard drive. If you've been running out of drive space or just want more, hard drives are inexpensive and easy to install.
Update your operating system - You can get Snow Leopard for $29 from Apple. When it comes out next month you can then get Lion for $29.99 from the Mac App Store. Unfortunately as of yet there is no way known to upgrade directly from Leopard to Lion.
Add an external hard drive to your system for backup. This is always a good idea to have, as data that is in only one place is vulnerable to loss if your hard drive fails.
Update all of your applications. Many can be bought online now through the Mac App Store, which has made it easy and inexpensive for applications that are available there.
Things you cannot upgrade -
Your MacBook's processor. This is the brain of the computer and a faster one will give you a speed boost in some applications. It is part of the logic board so you can't put a new one in.
Video card - also part of the logic board.
Interfaces such as FireWire, USB, video out, audio in and out.
If you need any of these, look for a newer computer.
Hope this helps you out.
Best of luck.

  • I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 and I want to replace a drive and install Lion

I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 with dual core intel 2.66 with 13 GB ram. I want to replace my startup disk 250GB (which has all my apps) but has been lagging ( I thinks it's an original drive) with the new HD in bay 2 (4 T drive) which I installed this week. I tried to install lion onto it and it said I needed a newer version 10.7.3-I have time machine as my backup on an external. All the bays are full and I'd like to trade them out sooner or later to get more room for movies, etc. The last OSX disk I have is Snow Leopard and that was rejected as not new enough. Can someone help me with info on installing Lion on the new drive. I know how to make it the startup disk after, but I can't seem to load 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 (not supported on my older mac pro.) Thanks,
    ANNE Z

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
    Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

I have an 2007 mac book pro that does not have a place for HDMI cable.  Can you please tell which converter I need?

You will need something such as this:
    http://www.amazon.com/A-Sonic-HDMI-HD15-Male-Cable/dp/B001OLCHJ6
    Ciao.
Note that this will only transmit video.  If you need sound, the audio output port will have to be tapped.

    Dear John,
thank you for your prompt reply. After I sent the email, I left the wheel spinning to see if it would eventually stop. It didn't, but after a while the screen turned blue, so I decided to switch everything off with a forced shut-down. I could not restart with the OS DVDs because I am currently away from home, but fortunately everything was more or less fine after restarting. It then got stuck again, I forced it shut again, restarted again, and now it seem to work but I won't overdo it and will switch off smoothly after writing this (unless it gets stuck again). Last April I have replaced the HD, so it's now just under 6 months old. And, of course, since the crash occurred when I was abroad and had backed up just before I left, I have lost only a few days' work. Still, and I know this will make me hugely unpopular here, with my 5 previous laptops running on MS Windows I never had a problem. Which does not mean I loved the OS, or I would not have switched to Mac.
Anyway, and this is the main reason for this message, thank you very much again for your speedy intervention.

Go to supportprofile.apple.com and remove your device. Alternatively you can call in to apple and have Apple look up your phone number. They may be able to remove it from their end.
If it does not show up in either of these places, have the people whe own the other iPhone send you a message> this message will be blue for an iMessage> have them push an hold on that message and select the option "send as text"> this should send the message as green> do this two - four time till it starts sending as green on its own.> this should fix it.

So it connected wirelessly at the Apple store where you took it for service? What kind of wireless router are you using and have you updated the firmware for it?

  • I have a 2007 Mac Book Pro. I drained the battery...

...and the power cord light is green meaning it isn't recharging, it has been about 72 hours. When do you have to replace these batteries and do they only come from the Apple Store?

No, different versions of those programs exist for iOS and OS X and one version can not run on the other. Personally, I wouldn't worry about registering it.

  • How to connect an external HD to a 2007 Mac Mini with FireWire

I have a 2007 Mac Mini with a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 1 GB of RAM, and an 80 GB HD. I recently migrated to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.5) from Tiger (OS X 10.4.11). I purchased a 500 GB external HD from Seagate which I want to use to back up both my wife's notebook PC and my Apple. My Mac Mini has a Firewire 400 (6-pin) female connector on the back. The external HD can connect to a Mac via a Firewire 800 male 9-pin connector. How do I connect the male FW 800 9-pin to the female FW 400 6-pin port? This may sound obvious, but the solution is more challenging than I imagined. The 9- to 6-pin adaptors I've seen online combine a female 6-pin end with a male 9-pin end. I need the reverse of that (female 9-pin FW 800 to male 6-pin FW 400 adaptor)! I bought a 9- to 6-pin cable this week, but ended up with two male 9-pin plug ends, and no way to connect them. Is a solution available using FW, or should I bail and go with a USB 2.0 connection instead?

Most external firewire drives have removable cables that plug into "female" ports on the hard drive. Is the firewire cabling on your external drive different from this? (What is the model number of the external drive?)
If the cable is removeable, simply buy a 6-pin-to-9-pin firewire cable (male on both ends).
monoprice.com is a good place to find these cheaply and in the length you need.

  • LED monitor and a 2007 mac pro compatibility

My mac monitor is busted, I need to get a new one, though this time it won't be an apple one.  I have a 2007 mac pro, what I need to know is a LED monitor compatible with my mac pro.
    For instance, this one,
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005MHMFJA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid =A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
I need a monitor with lots of USB ports though am not sure about compatibilit, when it comes to LED.
    Thanks

That one will work.  You will need a DVI cable.

  • Is my 2007 mac mini done for?

My parents have a 2007 mac mini that is getting the folder and question mark, and I've tried to open startup manager but no volumes appear.
Is it safe to say the HDD inside of it dead?

    Do they have a backup...?
If you have the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that was used to upgrade the Mini to 10.6, pop in the DVD and startup from it. Then navigate to Utilities > Disk Utility to see if you can find and make repairs to the startup volume. If you can not repair the startup volume and do not have a backup, check to see if you can copy the hard disc image to an external hard drive, then try erasing and reinstalling OS X.
If you only have the original Tiger disc set, pop in disc 1 and navigate to Utilities > Disk Utility. At this point you will not be able to repair the Snow Leopard startup volume with the Tiger Disk Utility, but if you can see the volume you might be able to copy it to an external hard drive before erasing and reinstalling OS X 10.4..

  • Quadro for 2007 Mac Pro

    Good night
I have two separate questions regarding expanding my 2007 Mac Pro.
The specs for this machine are:
    8 core 3Ghz Xeon
    5GB DDR-2 FB DIMM
    ATI Radeon X1900
As you might be aware I am unable to install 64bit windows on this machine due to compatibility issues with my hardware. However due to the nature of my job ( 3D artist ) I really need to run it and would be interested in any advice on which specific hardware I could replace that would allow me to run it on this machine.
Also, I am interested in buying a Quadro graphics card. Can anyone tell me are compatible with my Mac Pro?
    Cheers,
    Carlos

    Thanks hatter
I did take a look at welovemacs; I just thought that paying 2000 dollars for a graphics card that is 2 years old and isn't even sold by nvidia anymore is quite steep.
The hd 4870 looks good from tech specs - however I disregard bench mark tests that use gaming apps ( I don't use games in my workstation ) and no mention of 3D app performance. Besides I am only looking for grahics cards certified for DCC.
Buying a 2009 Mac pro is out of the question for me - I haven´t even finished paying the thousands of pounds I sank into this workstation. I am not in a hurry to buy another one, especially one that again doesn't even feature a Quadro graphics card in its current offering.
My intention is to make this usable for heavy duty 3D work in a shared OSX/Windows environment, preferably one that runs 64 bit windows ( my mac just refuses to boot the Vista OS I bought - any solutions welcome ).
From my standpoint, it looks as if Apple stopped bundling certified powerful graphics cards, the ones that are used in serious heavy duty production work ( I work mainly in commercials and primarily use PC's at work - they ALL run Quadros ).
It also looks as if Apple left me out to dry, having sank thousands of pounds in their system, I am unable to use 64 bit windows ( again standard issue in most commercials studios - unless running Linux ), and unable to pack serious heat ( graphics-wise ), even if I do want to run my apps in OSX.
Stuck between a rock and a hard place...
PS: don't get me wrong I love OSX, and would prefer to run everything here. Alas, the demands of my job seem to outpace the hardware that I have available to expand my Mac Pro...

  • 2007 Mac Pro disc problems?

Hopefully this could be a quick fix..
My 2007 Mac Pro has started rejecting DVDs I insert for burning all of a sudden. Its worked well until now.
What happens is that I drop a blank DVD-R into the MacPro, close the drive tray and wait for the prog to launch but instead the disk is ejected. I've tried several disks thinking perhaps this one was a glitched disk but nope, it's doing it on all the disks.. However, the same disk will burn properly in my PC. So now I'm having to transfer all my Mac work to the PC so I can burn it.. nice.
Is there anything I can check to see what's wrong with the disk drive on the Mac?
Does the Mac typically prefer a +R or a -R over the other format?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

Thanks for the link, it will take some digging to find what I need but good info..
I have a 3 yr warranty on this rig, so might as well take it into the shop and let them deal with it (drive replacement).
I tooled around with it last night, thinking maybe the whole drive is pooched but it will read the same -R and +R disk it previously wrote to, and written from other drives, so it's a bit of weird prob.
Not having much luck with anything working at 100% on the Macs I recently bought.. The daughter's MacBookPro has to go back for a clicking sounds which we were told is a power system prob, the Cinema Screen I bought has a couple of stuck pixels and the MacPro has this problem.. The original iMac I bought before all this was so horribly flawed with its fire wire that I returned it and bought the MacPro instead, JUST before the 2008's came out.
Hopefully get all of this sorted out and get some faith back..
    Cheers
