Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you have an Early 2008 iMac, you can install 6 GB of memory. You can buy it in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400
You can install more memory on your iMac without any problem, so don't worry about damaging the Mac. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#2

  • I have a 2008 iMac 21.5" 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with 4.1.3 VMWare and windows 7.Mountain Lion initially refused to down load as I had back up on the HD. this was removed and installation was accepted but froze in the initial stages with 33 mins to go.

I have a 2008 iMac 21.5" using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with VM Ware 4.1.3 supporting Windows 7. Initially ML OSX refused to install due to Back up on HD which I removed to trash. It then proceeded but froze up in the initial stages with 33 mins remaining. I was lucky enough to quit and restart using 10.6.8. With all the problems on this chat line, it appears it may be best to leave Mountain Lion well alone, and cut losses rather than tempt fate.Has anybody anything positive to say or help with?

    1. Open Disk Utility and repair permissions
    2. Open Finder, go to your user's folder > Library > Caches and delete everything
    3. Verify disk
    4. See if your apps are compatible with OS X 10.8 > http://www.roaringapps.com
You can also do a backup and create a DVD or USB drive to install OS X > http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/how-to-create-a-bootable-backup-mountain-li on-install-disk/ When you start in 10.8 installer, open Disk Utility, select your volume and erase the drive, and install

  • I have a 2008 iMac. Can iPhoto and iMovie process 720p HD videos?

I am shopping for a megazoom camera. They are mostly built for still photos, but also shoot HD videos.. in either 720p or 1080p formats. I have a 2008 iMac. I have not upgraded to Snow Leopard or a more recent version of iLIfe.
Can my version of iPhoto and iMovie process either format of HD?
A guy at the local Apple store said the video files have to be in AVCHD format, but I have found no info to back this up, so he is probably wrong.
A Canon online rep said 720p could be used, because my mac uses a 1080i format.  ??  Something about up-sourcing.
I am eager to buy a camera, but want to be VERY sure I can use at least a 720p HD format.
As I am a computer neophyte, please explain in layman's terms.
    Thanks very much!

iMovie from '08 iMac.. which makes the iMovie # 7.0
Thanks for the advice! I just found this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/15202.html.
As far as I can tell it says 1080i will work with iMovie 7.0,  But I could be wrong.
I think your advice on using 720p is excellent. The camera I am most inclined to buy at the moment is the Panasonic Lumix FZ-100. I think it has optional .. what do I call them.. resolutions? Possibility of shooting in either 720p or 1080i... or maybe not.
A rather rude apple tech support guy I spoke with yesterday.. if I remember correctly, said 720p or 1080i or 1080p.. wouldn't matter.. for '08 imoive.. but this might not be correct. Besides being unpleasant, he didn't explain things very well..
He also said it is best to find a camera that shoots in AVCHD, and that if I didn't find one, I would have to convert the video file to AVCHD.. I am wondering how to do that, and I am wondering if he is correct.
You have a Canon.. I got an email from a Canon rep who says none of the Canon cameras shoots in AVCHD.. maybe this is not a problem? Do you have to convert your video files to AVCHD?
And.. If I have been shooting in 1080i..or 1080p for that matter,  if I understand you correctly, I can process that video in 720p instead? I don't know if there is an option for this in iMovie '08 (which is version 7.. GRRRR.)
This is all too @#$% complicated! I've been doing research for almost a week.. many hours a day.. trying to figure out what camera to buy, and whether or not it is compatible with my mac. I thought I had it figured out.. but maybe not..
If I need to, I'll get the iLife '09.. but have been reading bad reviews of iLife '11, so probably won't get that one.
Besides the Pan. Lumix, I am checking out the Canon SX20 and SX30.. both shoot in 720p.. I think..  If I can convert these to AVCHD easily (or if I don't have to convert them) maybe the Canons are a better choice.
Lastly.. will these videos process with iPhoto? Mostly I just want to put videos on youtube without any fancy editing. I've been doing this with an older but excellent point and shoot Canon (that does not shoot videos in HD), and have had no problems uploading to youtube.
Thanks VERY much for the help!

i have a 2008 imac with snow leopard.  i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users.  Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem?  CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?  Also my HP scannerwill not save the displayed scanned document since this update!  it just saves gray.

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

  • I have a 2002 imac, how do i update the software?

i have a 2002 imac, how do i update the software? i have the original software and it wont let me update itunes! help!!

Apple seldom leaves of old versions of iTunes compatible with a 12-year old computer on the web site. What OSX version is currently on the iMac?
If you need a newer version of itunes to support an iPad, iPod, or iPhone, your computer is too old. Full support for Apple iDevices requires Mac OS 10.6.8; a 2002 iMac is limited to no higher than 10.4.11, or maybe 10.5.8 with a hack. Still, not enough for working with current mobile devices.

  • Have a 2008 iMac 24".  How to convert from mini-DVI to mini-displayport?

I bought this awesome device recently:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=6331&seq=1&format=2
It takes the TOSLINK audio output and the minidisplayport output and combines it into HDMI to use in a home theater. However, I just found out that older iMacs (2008) have mini-DVI out, NOT mini-displayport. I've searched high and low and I cannot find a cable/adapter combination that will convert this for me so I can use it on my 2008 iMac. Any suggestions?
IDEALLY it would be a male mini-dvi to female mini-displayport. This doesn't seem to exist.

    Well, there is this one
    http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html
but it is expensive. Going from DVI to DisplayPort is not simply a matter of changing the shape of the connector. And you would need a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter to connect to this device.

  • I have a 2008 iMac with Bootcamp 5.0 and I am trying to install windows 7 home premium 64 bit on it. How do I go about this?

I have been having trouble installing Windows 7 Home Premium on my 2008 iMac while using BootCamp.  It has OS X Mavericks 10.9.1.  Every time I try and use bootcamp I come across a blank black screen with a flashing white curser in the top left hand corner after it has restarted.  If anyone knows a solution to this that would be great.

Why has my monitor suddenly begun to have a moiré pattern all over – it is even showing up on my icons on the dock? It appears to be very thin bright green vertical lines. I have a 2007 iMac which is running 10.6.8. What does this mean? I've attached some screen shots below.
Also experiencing some funky issues with my wireless keyboard. With new batteries, it will just stop functioning. Certain keys intermittently won't work. Also the fans go on as soon as I turn the computer on - some times they stay on and sometimes they don't. Ever since upgrading the operating system - I've been having many issues with this iMac. Not happy. Any answers out there?

Thanks for your reply LexSchellings, There is no disc in the drive and I went through the suggestions you put forward on the phone with Apple support without any luck. I can put a disc in but it pops straight back out again without registering on finder.
The idea of using an external drive was to enable me to avoid the cost and loss of productivity whilst machine in repair... if I have to take it in to get the old drive removed than I might as well have a new internal drive put in, although I do worry about the reliability of these apple drives given my experience with this one coupled with my limited online research ... on line forums seem to be full of people with the same problem (although perhaps searching such forums is bound to make it seem a common problem as users with perfectly working machines are less likely to post (?)) Your reply suggests that no external drive will work whilst the existing drive is in place.
As a postscript: I do realise that this is a user forum ...my secondary question was asking if anyone knows how to put forward a case/complaint to Apple... I can't find a link on the support page that would enable me to do so and I was wondering if anyone on this user forum had any ideas/experience..

  • I used to be able to make iDVDs to share. photos with family members.  Now I can't even open iPhoto when I am working on iDVD.  I have a 2008 iMac.  I already recently updated the computer memory from 1GB to 4GB.

I have a 2008 mac, and am trying to use the latest iPhoto app. But it won't open. I have installed the library upgrade but still won't open?

Why not? We can not see you so you have to give us details
Did you run the iPhoto Library upgrader after you installed it - if not backup your iphoto library and go to the utilities folder in your Applications folder and double click on the iphoto library upgrader and RUN i - then launch iphoto 9.6 to complete the upgrade

  • 2012 iMac vs. 2008 iMac - how much faster overall?

My 2008 24" iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.8 GHz, 4GB RAM) still serves me well -- Final Cut Pro, internet, music and everything else.
If I take the plunge and upgrade to the new 27" iMac for $2,199 (3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz) -- how much speed increase will I notice across the board, with the uses I mentioned above?

I just made the move from a 2007 iMac (with a 2nd generation Seagate hybrid drive) to a 2012 iMac with Fusion drive and the speed difference is quite significant. Obviously part of that is the difference between 6GB RAM and 16GB RAM but Photoshop filters, for example, which take...a...moment...or...two on the 2007 model are done after clicking okay. Boom.
Note: at the store I noticed a significant difference between the 5400 RPM model in boot, program launch, and document handling and the fusion drive. No question about it, the fusion drive is worth the extra money.

  • I have a new iMac - how do file share my music and photos from my old mac to my new mac?

I want to transfer my music and photos from one Mac to another - but I don't want to transfer anything else - what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from /users//music on the source to /users//music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
do the same with your iPhoto library. see this support article for more information (except, you won't have to option-launch iPhoto)
