I have a 2009 imac

I have a 2009 imac. I am running 8 gis of memory and use iphoto, aperture and shoot in the raw format. I recently looked at buying a new imac and see they are limited to 8 gigs. Does anyone have a suggesstion regarding an upgrade? Why did Apple limit the memory to 8 gigs? I am using  IOS Mavericks, 3.06 Intel, 500 hard drive.
Thank you

Hi,
If you are asking whether the current iMacs are really limited to 8 gigs, they are not.
In the linked Apple web page you can see if you look at the Tech Specs that the current iMacs are configurable to 16 GB (or 32 GB for the larger screen version.) The caution is that you have to make this decision at the time of purchase because of limitations on what we or even qualified pros can do later.
Good luck,

You need a newer 2011 or later iMac to use Airplay.
    Sorry.
For older Mac, look at an app called AirParrot

Hello, I have a 2009 iMac, and my harddrive has failed several times now.
I tired to reinstall snow leopard with the install DVD that came with my iMac. However the disc is damaged so I bought a new Snow Leopard but my iMac wont read the new disc, it just stays in the apple logo screen, I have tired safe boot, holding down the "C" key on startup and tried using disc utility but getting nowhere.
    Please help. Thanks.

Might be related, if your hard drive is a 1TB drive,it could be a Seagate drive.
The drives are known to fail and your iMac maybe covered for free replacement under the Apple's Seagate hard drive replacement program until April 12 of this year.
I Believe the 2009 models are covered under this replacement warranty.
You can find out if you are eligible here.

  • I have a 2009 iMac. It is shutting down all the time. I am beyond over this. If no luck with help on here I am making an appointment to have service.

I am getting ready to call and schedule to take imac in for service. Thought I would try on here first. It is shutting down all the time. Its like it just crashes.

    Paul,
Thank you for the quick response. here is my mac. I sure hope someone can pin point the cause of this.

  • I have an 2009 imac running os 10.6.8 and a newer macbook air which I'm trying to connect using a wireless network without success, help?

I have already set up and selected sharing in the system preferences but keep getting the error that the server may not exist?
I'm not sure if I've done this right?  I'm completely not computer savvy and would appreciate any and all step by step guidance.

On both computers I selected the file sharing, printer sharing and screen.  Then when I go to either finder - go - connect to server i get the following message:

  • How do I retrieve the icons in the download map of my 2009 iMac with Maverick. They show up in the finder, but not when I open downloads from the dock.

I have a 2009 iMac running on Mavericks. Since a few days, when I open the Download Map from the dock, I only see "empty" icon symbols. When I leave the map open the icons re-appear after some 20 seconds. When I re-open the downloads, the icons are empty again.
How do I get the icons to behave in a normal way again?

bro I just had this issue its as simple as swiping to the right of each album artwork that does not display in the list view (On your Iphone.) Once you swipe to the right on every album that does not display in the list view you will see the delete option come up. Hit delete! Dont be scared. Do this with every album art that does not show up and then resync your Iphone. Go to the list view again and all of your missing album artwork will be displayed in both the list overview and close up landscape mode.

  • How do i Use my old 2009 imac as a monitor for my new 27 inch 2014 iMac?

Just got the 2014 27-inch iMac, and i have a 2009 iMac as well as a ViewSonic Monitor with a Thunderbolt adaptor.
Is it possible with the 2 Thunderbolt display ports to have 2 extra monitors?...So far on the ViewSonic works. I tried to use Migration Assistant to Transfer files, and the 2014 saw the other computer, but the 2009 just kept looking for a connection while it was connected by Thunderbolt.
At a local Mac store, i asked this question, and when they confirmed the the 2014 had 2 Thunderbolt ports, that i would be able to use the old iMac and an additional monitor.
    Please Help,
    Thank You

    Hello,
i have a 2009 iMac and Windows 7 64bit in my Boot Camp.
Windows is now slow and needs to be reinstalled.
The problem is the DVD-Drive in my iMac is broken, so i can't use my Windows-install-DVD.

  • Connecting a tv as an extra monitor - 2009 iMac variation

I have a 2009 IMac and I too want to export a video signal to my analog TV auxiliary input. Any suggestions? My TV accepts RCA plug and S-video. Also, any comments about the picture quality would be appreciated. Thanks.

In a quick Google search, I do not see any Mini DisplayPort (which is the type of video port on the new 2009 iMacs) adapters that go to composite video (RCA and S-Video). There are adapters that go from Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (used on HDTVs). Mini DisplayPort is a new standard, so there may be such adapters in the future.
However, I have read that the new Mini DisplayPort is a pure digital connection, so there may be no way to use a simple adapter to go to a purely analog output (such as for composite video). This is not confirmed in any Apple document that I know of, so it may not be true.
You can look at this rather extensive topic thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9155451
especially the excellent post by Lougle (the one with pictures), who provides a solution that he (or she) has shown to work.
As for picture quality, I have used older Macs to connect a standard TV over S-Video and RCA. The result is mixed. If you are using something like DVD Player or QuickTime Player to display a video in full screen mode on the TV, it works about as well as that TV would from a stand-alone DVD player. However, if you want to use it as a computer display (like a second screen to extend your Desktop), it is not worth the effort. The resolution will be low compare to a real computer display, and very very blurry.

  • Best way to to hook up Thunderbolt NAS to 2009 iMac

I have a 2009 iMac with USB and FireWire.  I just purchased and new NAS with Thunderbolt and USB.  Is there any way to connect at a faster speed than the USB 2.0 that I my computer has?

There are  Thuderbolt to FireWire adapters but most people use that to connect a Thunderbolt capable Mac to a FireWire drive.
Nor sure if it will work in the opposite direction as you are looking to do, FireWire Mac to Thunderbolt drive.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - Further research seems to indicate this WILL NOT work. So USB is the best you can do.

  • Sync music from 2009 iMac to iPhone 5c.

I have a 2009 iMac and a new iPhone5c.  I can't sync my music because I don't have a new enough version of itunes on my iMac.  I can't get the version I need because my operating system is too old.  Can anybody help please? I'm not very good with this stuff, but I can't believe that it's not possible for me to get my music onto my iPhone.  Seems wrong to me.

A couple of thoughts......(you haven't by any chance jailbroken your iPad, have you?)
You might be trying to put too much on at one time.  So.....
    1.  Turn off any anti-virus/firewall software and try again
    2.  Try to sync less and then sync again with additional music that didn't sync over
    3.  Make sure you haven't accidentally checked the music as audio books
After these tips, I'm out of ideas and hopefully someone else will chime in.
    Good Luck

  • 2009 imac vs apple tv

I Have alate 2009 imac. I have also apple tv. I understand the older macs cannot do mirror imaging to your tv. I have installed the latest mountain lion. Can the computer be upgraded to allow mirroring thru apple tv to my tv?

    From Apple site
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).

  • Install Win7 on late 2009 iMac with Suspect Superdrive

I may be hooped here, but it is worth a try.  I have a 2009 iMac with a very dubious Superdrive.  With the end of Windows XP support, (and the existing Windows XP installation being too slow to use), I decided to upgrade to Win7. Of course, the computer is also bugging me to upgrade to Mavericks.  So, I backed up the contents of the Windows folders for the data I want to keep, and removed the Windows partition.
I have a copy of Windows 7 as an ISO file, which I proceeded to convert into a bootable DVD, and ran Bootcamp to install Windows 7.  Things proceeded as expected with the partition being made, Windows files being transferred, Windows starting up, then ... the system will copy no more files from the DVD. Now, of course, the Superdrive will not recognize the DVD I inserted into it.
Is there any way to get a 2009 iMac to install Windows 7 from a USB memory stick?

    Repair your Superdrive.

  • I have an early 2009 iMac need advice

I am new to this forum. As I mentioned in subject I have an early 2009 iMac with 4 GB of Ram. I am up to date with my operating system, running Yosemite 10.10.1.
My problem is that my computer is slow - very slow.  It takes forever for the computer to start up and once it up forever for programs to load. Mail is the best example taking it a minimum of 5 minutes to load and in the mean time nothing else will load. RecentlyI started running the disk utility and repairing permissions.  That helps a tiny bit. I also got CleanMyMac 2 and use it as well. In reading some of the forum I noticed someone suggested to run an EtreCheck report and post its report which I have done.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Pay attention to what rkaufmann87 is saying, because I agree.
    Chrome is very resource intensive.
It is possible you are running other memory intensive apps.
You have a lot of 3rd party additions loaded at boot time.  Do you really need all of them?  Even after you get rid of MacCleaner (as suggested by rkaufmann87).
Do you really need the seagate and WD drive software?  The Mac is fairly good at accessing disks without 3rd party intervention.
Any of the 3rd party additions listed by EtreCheck that you do not need, you should consider uninstalling.
    That fact that you have
        171.19 GB    Page-ins
in just about 4 days, says you have about 0.5megabytes per second.  That is a huge load on your disk drive.
Either cut back on the RAM intensive apps, or get more RAM.  At least 8GB, but if your Mac supports it, 16GB.  Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected by the long term forum contributes.
