I have a $400 paperweight

iPod photo 40GB bought February 2005, plus Applecare. I loved this iPod which gave me just under a year of impeccable service.
A few weeks ago it started giving me problems.
Symptoms: After a full charge overnight (via powerbrick, not computer), I would disconnect from the powerbrick and lock it. A few hours later on my break at work, I would start listening to a playlist (using all battery saving techniques - backlight 5 seconds, soundcheck off, etc.) and after about 12 - 15 songs iPod would die, and would not reset without connecting again to powerbrick, which would show battery charge almost full.
Took it to my local Genius bar and the Genius checked it and said that 'a file was missing in the operating system.' He 'fixed' it for me, in the process erasing my 8500 songs and 2500 photos.
After re-syncing all my songs and photos and fully recharging, iPod again died and refused to do anything until connected to power source.
Sent it off to Apple (great service, by the way - called DHL to collect it and they were here within FIVE minutes, swear to God.) Apple kept it 8 days and said that they found it to be fully functional.
So I charged it overnight...commenced listening to my favorite playlist...and it died after 13 songs...would not reset until connected to the powerbrick.
I have tried to use it several times, and each time the same thing happens. So much for a 'portable' mp3 player. Mine works great when connected to a powerbrick or my daughter's IM7 InMotion speaker system, but I bought it to be a portable player, and as such it makes a great paperweight.
I am actually thinking of filing a complaint to California's Attorney General under this sate's 'lemon laws.'

Hello David,
Before you do anything, may I suggest you to do the following :-
1. Plug your iPod with your Mac (prefer put it into disk mode)
2. Open the Disk Utility
3. Go to Tab "Partition" and click delete
4. Go to Tab "erase" and click ersase
5. Open the iPod updater and click Restore
Hope it works.

I realise you can you can delete them on your ipod slowly as you have to click on each one, and you can restore your ipod, but surely there is a way to get around this?

David, have you enabled the "Autoflow" options? There are settings behind the cogwheel, that will automatically place unused images onto new pages. If you only want to select a few images from a large project, disable these two options:
Or start your book froman album, that only contains a selection of your images, rather than from the whole project.

Select the Inbox folder to see emails.
click on first email to get focus.
Hold down 'Ctrl' key and press 'A' key
This will highlight /select all emails.
they will appear as conversations in the Message Pane
Clickon Delete.
when it has finished - you do have a lot of emails :)
Right click on Inbox and select 'compact' - this removes all marked as deleted emails.

I have an iMac (20 inch, Mid 2007) with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDRs SDRAM and have over 400 mega bits of pictures on a partitioned external drive: 2 TB G-Technology by Hitachi connected by FireWire 800 to my iMac. My iPhoto application no longer reveals what version of iPhoto I have, but it was last updated on Dec 14, 2013 with a 1.7 GB file.
Tried dragging from its place on external hard drive.
When I go into the iPhoto it says it is not compatible with OS X Yosemite but the link offered to App Store says they do not have an update.

Apple dropped both iPhoto and Aperture with the Yosemite release, and I am not happy about that as I used Aperture, but try holding down the option key when you click on the Photos icon. That should bring up a box asking what library you want to connect to. In my case it had both Aperture and Photos. But there is also a choice called "other" that I would think would allow you to navigate to where your library is located and select it.

Music on my iPhone has become very difficult to edit since upgrading to 5.0.1. If I simply want to delete some songs, it insists on a complete sync cycle after EACH one I delete. This is so annoying… (I have over 400 Christmas songs I won't need until next year) I have also noticed it randomly keeps updating album artwork…adding more time to each sync. Is there some way I can turn off the syncing until I have picked and deleted all the songs I want?

The cause was probably a USB glitch during a sync or when copying. The music resides on the phone in separate files. A master file contains a database with an index to the music, an entry for each track and a "pointer" to the file containing the track. Somehow the index got corrupted with duplicate entries. It's likely that the music itself wasn't duplicated, but some tracks had more than one entry in the database. I've seen this happen when syncing (rather than manually managing) also. In my case deleting the track from the Music tab in iTunes, syncing, then adding it back fixed it.
A related problem I've seen is an album may be split, with some tracks in each of 2 or more album entries in the listing. Fixed the same way.

Once in awhile, I cannot send emails. The error message I receive is the following:
4.0.0 You have exceeded 400 recipients in the last 24 hours. Please try later. I called Verizon, my internet provider and they couldn't help me. I called Apple and they said there was nothing they could do to help me--that I needed to get help on-line.
It appears that I am getting this because I have been marked as a spammer for some reason. I do not send emails out to more than 6-10 people at a time--and am not spamming. The results are that I cannot send emails for about a day at a time, however I still receive emails. Has anyone else had this experience?

No, it is a standard message sent to anyone that has sent over the limit, so if you genuinely haven't sent that many (which could be one message to 400 people, 400 messages each to a single person, or any combination you choose, in any 24-hour period) then you have to consider the possibility that someone else is using your .mac mail.
I don't use .mac, so cant help specifically. Try browsing the .mac forums (Apple - Support - Discussions - .Mac) and see if it is possible to obtain a log or if anyone is posting similar problems - or post there yourself.

So, having had iTunes on my computer for SO long, my tastes have changed alot. I started syncing songs onto a newer laptop, but it recently broke and until I can get 280 bucks to replace the hard drive, I've gotta use my old one- which has 450 songs, none of which I want to listen to. Anyways, I was gifted an iPod Shuffle recently and I wanted to connect it to get some of those 400 songs back, because there was like 10 or 12 that i really liked and wanted to keep. So, now I have to manually scroll down a list of 450 songs and uncheck them all, save the 10 or so I want to keep. Is there any way I can do this differently? In case you are going to respond with a different way to re-download those 10 songs, there ARE other reasons. I just dont really have the time right now to list them all.

No. I have quite a few more 16,000, so I don't manually manage. Making playlists for each device makes things much easier to organize. You can create regular lists of essential tracks and smart playlists to automatically catch new content, top rated, most played etc. If you'd done it this way all along configuring a new or restored device would be the work of moments.

AS/400 is an integrated MID Range system which has its own OS and database with higher security levels as we have it for main frames..
OS/400 - operating system
DB2/400 - Data base
Programming languages we use are, RPG, CL, RPG ILE.

Bootcamp quit half way now i have lost 400 gig! Help

I was running bootcamp on my late 2012 imac 3t fution drive and it stoped partitioning so i quit. Now there is no bootcamp hdd but ihave lost the 400 gig!
i canot see it and i dont know how to get it back.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. If you cannot find it then you may need to verify the disk in Disk Utility app on your iMac. The best way to do this is to do it from you Recovery HD on your iMac. To do this restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with an OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window. Then click on Disk Utility.

Do I have an expensive paperweight?

I recently purchased a used iPad 3 64GB machine on eBay and it indicated that it was "as is" but was running OS7. Thinking it would be no problem because I could take it to the local Apple store and they could do their magic and fix whatever might be wrong. I now find out that the seller tried unsuccessfully to contact the previous owner asking that they remove the unit from their account with no response. I have tried unsuccessfully to attempt to figure out the previous owner's email hoping to convence them to remove the unit from their account but no luck. The unit has been erased clean but I can't access because I am not the previous owner. So...do I own an expensive paperweight?

I just upgraded from the 40 Gig (non photo) to the 60Gig Photo iPod and noticed that my dock does not work either...
Yes - mine works fine (transfering music) directly using the cable into the USB port.
What I found, at least with the 60Gig iPod is that the case is slightly bigger than the other models which is prohibiting the docking connector from fully inserting into the iPod!
Why would Apple make the cases larger, I know - to accomodate the larger drive... But now what does one do with these external toys from BOSE, etc. that allow the iPod to slip in the front... The 60 Gig iPod is too big..

Now revised down to 85 hours. Why is this so so so long?? Is there a faster way? What happens if I cancel now. Is there a way to cancel? As there is no cancel button....

The 2006 MacBook has firewire. Use a cable like this. Boot the '06 with the T key held down until you see the Firewire icon. Connect the 400 port on the '06 to the 800 port on the i7. Run Migration Assistant. 400 GB will still take a long time, but it will be closer to 8 hours I think.
