I have a 6 year old ipod registered to a old account I can no longer access. How do I reset it?

6 years ago I decided to get in shape. So I bought an iPod to listen too music when i worked out. I used it mostly for audio books. Three years ago we bought a new home and I started working out at home. My iPod has sat unused ever since then in my gym bag...until this week. I bought myself a new car and the new car has a hook up for my iPod. So I dig it out and plug it in. Works great in the car.
So I decide it's time to get some more music and I make myself up a new Apple account, plug in the iPod and (insert sad music here). iTunes doesn't like my old iPod. The reason is the iPod was made with an old Apple account under an old e-mail address at our old house. An e-mail address I no longer have and with a password I no longer remember.
So I have iTunes up and running and I even dowloaded into it my Beatles collections but I can't get iTunes and the iPod to talk to each other because they're basically set up under different accounts. How can I reset my iPod to it's factor settings or whatever so i can start syncing it again with this new account. There is nothing on it that I can't put back on so I don't mind wiping it clear.

I should add that I have tried the online on how to restore but it says it has to be through iTunes and iTunes doesn't even recognize the iPod at this point. The iPod is an iPod 2 classic I believe.
