I have a 8gb ipod touch but it only uses 6.4 gb! why?

My ipod isn't using all of the data that is should which is making it impossible to have all of the songs that want on my ipod! What's going on? If you paid for a 8gb ipod then you should get every GB that you paid for.

Copied from How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity
Storage device manufacturers measure capacity using the decimal system (base 10), so 1 gigabyte (GB) is calculated as exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes. The capacity of the storage media in your Mac (Mac OS X v10.5 or earlier), iPad, iPod, iPhone and other Apple hardware is measured using this decimal system. We set this out on our product packaging and on our website through the statement "1 GB = 1 billion bytes."
The storage media in your Apple product, like all storage devices, uses some of its capacity for formatting, so actual capacity available for applications and files will be less. In addition, other factors, such as pre-installed systems or other software and media, will also use part of the available storage capacity.

  • Bought daughter new 8gb ipod touch but it only takes 900 of her 1400 songs.  Has anyone else had this problem?

Bought daugher the 8gb ipod touch to replace her nano but it only takes 900 of her 1400 songs.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I was told that it would hold 2000+ songs.  She had no photos or videos on it, just uses it for music.  Can anyone advise.  Thanks

The person who told you it would hold 2000+ songs was stretching the truth. This might be true with 128kbps MP3 files. Not true with 256kbps AAC files (like from the iTunes store).
    128kbps MP3s are around 2 to 4MB each. 2000 x 3MB = 6GB.
256kbps AAC files are often 5 to 10MB each
The average size of your daughter's music files is 6.5GB/900 = 7.2MB
    1400 songs at 7.2MB = 14GB
Many of us have the problem of not being able to sync our entire music collections.  In that you are not alone. The answer about converting to 128kbps AAC is a possible solution. It sacrifices sound quality for size, though.  My solution is to sync what I usually want to listen to. I have many songs that I rarely listen to; the result of ripping complete CDs, including all the "filler" songs.

    - Try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Can you access the mail on another device?

  • ITunes says there is almost a GB of photos on my iPod touch, but I only have 6 pictures

    Hello Apple community:
I have an 8GB iPod touch, 4th Gen. I am trying to make some space for movies, iOS 6 upgrades, etc. and I noticed on iTunes' "iPod touch summary page", there is almost a gig of pictures, even though I only have abou 6 pictures, and half aren't even hi-res! Is there a way to get iTunes to recognize that there are only 6 pictures?
    Thanks

I had a similar situation with movies - 6G of phantom files.  Uncheck this box and do a sync.  Check it and sync again.

The iPod's firmware is corrupt. You'll need to restore it again in iTunes. If necessary, place the iPod in recovery mode for iTunes to recognize the device. Use the instructions in this Apple support document to walk you through the process of placing the iPod Touch into recovery mode.

  • The camera shutter is stuck closed. I have reset my ipod touch, but no luck. What do I do now?

My camera shutter is stuck closed. I have reset my ipod touch, but no luck. What is my next step? Thanks for your help.

You can try restoring from backup and to factory defaults/new iPod but that might not solve the problem.  See this long-running discussion on stuck shutter.

  • I have updated my ipod touch but i have to update iphone and ipad 1 and ipad2 . How can I save the udated software in order to avoid teh time for downloading it again each time

I have updated my ipod touch but i have to update iphone and ipad 1 and ipad2 . How can I save the udated software in order to avoid teh time for downloading it again each time

Even though the downloads are for the same iOS version number, they are different downloads and you can't use an iPod iOS update to update an iPhone or iPad etc. The iPad 1 and iPad 2 are also different downloads. So you will need to download different updates for your iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad 1 and the iPad 2.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

  • Why is my 8gb ipod touch full with only 227 songs

Why is my 8GB Ipod touch full with only 227 and nothing else. I also share my itunes with my Iphone, There is only audio on my IPod

Did you post this same question recently?
What is the detail format of the music? Music can be compressed to different degrees. The less compression the more storage each song needs.
Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:

  • I have lost my ipod touch but i have locked it is there a way to access the data inside?

I lost my ipod touch, but i have locked it, is there a way that others one can access my data.?

No, they cannot. The only way for them to bypass the passcode is to restore it as new in iTunes, and that would erase all of your data.

  • Why does it show 6GB when I have an 8GB Ipod Touch?

When I look at my capacity, it says it has 6.46 GB but I have the 8 GB Ipod Touch. Why don't I have all 8GB's.?
I don't want to have to delete memories just to make room for new apps and music. My husband is having the same problem with his 64GB.

You have 8 GB total, but the operating system and the apps that come with it take up storage space. 6.5 GB is your 'available' space.

  • Hi! I have a 8gb iPod touch 5.0.1 and my app store and my contacts calculator , mails are not on the home secreen and I go to restrictions and they said that that things are on .

    Hi!
I have a iPod touch 8GB 5.0.1 and my contacs my app store Are not on the home screen and my contacs .
So I go to restrictions and they say that they are ON  so I reboot my iPod and he still the same thing.
So I restore my iPod from iTunes and iTunes say that this iPod cannot be restore and I do that on a MacBook pro and I do the second time on windows computer.
    So I need help , I don't know what to do .
    Thank you .

The app, if not restricted, may be hidden in your folders.  If you go to settings, general, reset, reset home screen layout, you can rule that out.
Does your restore give you a specific error?  If so, see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 and http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
You can also restore from your iPod, by going to settings, general, reset, reset all content and settings, but make sure that you have created a backup beforehand.
