I have a "event" in my calendar that has no edit button, how do I delete it?

The event was populated in my iPhone 5 (to occur week after week) by accepting an e-mail invite.  Unlike manual entries into the calendar, this one has no edit button when opened and I cannot seem to delete them, suggestions?

When you refer to your iPad's trash folder, you must mean a trash folder in your email account.  The way to clear out this particular folder depends on your email provider.
Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and click on your account provider's name.  There you will likely find an Advanced button to click which will provide a category like "Remove After ..." [some period of time, after which your trash is discarded].
