I have a G3 700 MHZ dual usb combo drive TRYING to install 10.4 TROUBLES!

hello
this is my first apple mac and i bought a ibook g3 powerbook which is:
700mhz processor 512k level 2
128mb SDRAM + 256mb stick
20GB ultra ATA hard drive
combo drive
400mpbs firewire port
video VGA
originally i tried to do a COMPLETE new install of 10.4 which the CD install completely wipped the laptop for before new install. the 10.4 disks installed and showed as installed on the hard drive as it took up about 3GB of space... i then went to restart computer like it requests but i got an UNHAPPY face and a QUESTION mark! i tried booting up from OS X cd selecting the hard drive but kept getting the same results...
can anyone help or say why it wont load???
i then reinstalled the original 10.1 disks i got with the laptop and i then tried to...
...update it to 10.2.4 from 10.1 and it worked absolutely great :O)
(i thought i'd try going though all the upgrades to get to 10.4...
i then got a 10.3.4 disk this is when problems happened again, i loaded disk first time i did an upgrade install and i did custom install (i didnt want printer drivers and languauges on so disabled them) about 10 mins later came up with error while installing so i quit install, restarted G3 and reset cd off again to upgrade....
the second time i forgot to deselect printer drivers and while installing them 'narna' froze. so i had to put power plug out to get it to restart up.
i switched back on and got a grey language screen telling me to press power button to restart. thats all i got...
i've tried option button with disk so i can select the drive from which to start it up and my drive is there with 10.3 on it with a red cross on the box. if i selected that drive to boot G3 up from it restarts computer and then while it loads i got the grey apple screen and then it freezes again but this time i got lots of grey/white lines across the screen...
so i THEN AGAIN wiped it and i am now back to 10.2 version and wanting to try upgrading to 10.3 if anyone knows reason it wouldnt work
OR
if someone can help me get 10.4 on it. i know the RAM may seem low but it is enough to install as the cds/books say it is...

hi ronda,
i've 1GB RAM in the mini. but that's not the problem.
even on my G5 1,6GHz powermac with 3GB RAM you can't play any of those heavy flashgames like farmville, frontierville or treasure isle. takes forever until they've been loaded by the browser and when you try to move your avatar and do some game action it will at best move in slow motion or you will get the spinning beachball until finally browser or flash plugin crashes.
so that's for a G4 mini and a G5 powermac. the OP asked if farmville could be run on a G3 700MHz ibook. it's a no go. sorry.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

So I tried it again and it said I still have all the same updates like i had never tried to install them? Any help? I want the new Itunes.

Run through this list of fixes and see if there is anything wrong with your machine
by #10 you should be fixed to Software Update and get iTunes.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then try Software Update again, and or download iTunes directly from Apple and install it

  • IMac 700 mhz dv. 60gb hard dirve 58 free Set up trouble, new to me

This is a new computer to me but part of the last owners names remain on the home icon. Having difficulty with crashing when running classic 9.2.1 and 10.1 updated 10.1.5. I have upgraded the firmware to 4.1.9 as well. The apple hardwaredisk pointed to a leaf discrepancy and to hard drive needs repair. I am guessing there is some trouble in file hierchy set up caused by me and Iwant to re load the the OS X or OS 9 with myself as the only administrator and user.
I cannot install and run the first OS X disk? How should I proceed?

    Matt,
Thanks for the advice I need help with some interim steps.
Actually going to 10.3 has been my goal. Although in interim I installed 10.1.5. I have 256 mg of ram, I just purchased (2) 512 mg ram. I also purchased an external hard drive. Neither installed yet. Should I install now?
Are there specific cd versions of OS X 10.3 for my imac. Where can I purchase?
In my poor understanding of file hierarchy, I have lost by moving, my address book and mail data. How can I find them again before erasing? I have some documents and pictures I would like to save.
The cd disc I have OS 9 is 9.2.1, OS X is 10.1 (I got 10.1.5 from apple) I reinstalled 9.2.1 but he OS X 10.1 has a dialog box at the install window which says install disc is disabled because it is read only. Do you know why this is happening.......?
Also have an iMac Application cd, and Software Restore 1/3,2/3,3/3. and an Apple Hardware Test cd for iMac. I have only attempted use with the first two discs above.
I was hoping to master this before moving on. I do have reference books but am not finding answers. I would like to salvage data. I am learning but not fast enough.
    Thanks ever so much!!!!

  • USB Errors while trying to install 64 bit Arch

I'm trying to install Arch onto some brand new hardware. I am installing using the Arch Netboot environment.
When I try to install 64 bit Arch, I get the following errors straight after archiso.img is downloaded and the kernel is booted:
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 2-5: device not accepting address 4, error -32
usb 2-5: device not accepting address 5, error -32
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5
The same lines appear for usb 4-1, 6-5 and 7-1. The only USB device that is plugged in is the USB key that I booted ipxe.lkrn from.
Googling seems to point to a kernel module that needs to be loaded earlier or a faulty USB controller. I do not know how to change what kernel modules are used during installation, and I'm fairly certain the USB controllers are fine. Its a brand new motherboard and I can access my USB key fine (I can boot from it) in any of the available USB ports.
I was close to giving up until for some reason I decided to try and install the 32 bit version of Arch instead. This worked as expected and I am sent to the archiso installation prompt without seeing any of the same USB errors.
Can someone please assist me with this? I would really prefer to have the 64 bit version installed.

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158206
This seems to be related, although my errors are giving error -32 instead of -110.
Is there a way I can force the installation environment to use kernel 3.7.6? Does the 32 bit installer use a different kernel to the 64 bit installer?
Is there a way I can use the 32 bit installation environment to install 64 bit as well as the 3.7.6 kernel?

  • I have an early Mac mini with a combo drive, 1Gig memory and 80Gig hard drive. Can I replace my memory chip with a 2Gig?

I know Apple doesn't like us to crack the case, but if I want to upgrade to mavericks, I need 2Gig memory. I have plenty of available space on my hard drive.

First if you have not already done so, check to see if your Mac Mini model meets the requirements...?
see > Apple - OS X Mavericks - Read the technical specifications.
Then for RAM, go to > Memory, Drives, Free Installation Guides for Apple Mac mini and select your model.
In addition to the OWC guides, go to > Mac Mini Repair - iFixit, again select your model and click on the RAM guide.

  • I have just bought an airport time capsule and im trying to install an airport utility. I tried the 6 version but it wd not load because it said might mac would not support. I then tried the 5.6.1. and it said it would not work with airport capsule.

I have just bought an airport time capsule and i am trying to install an airport utility programme to support this
However, it seems the version 6 which came out last year - i can't use on my Mac - Snow Leopard -
So tried to then install version 5.6.1 and although this installed properly, it says this will not support my capsule
    2. I have BT home hub 2. I presume I cannot bypass this as the internet router? I bought the time capsule for its capability to back up . The router was a byproduct. But am I correct in thinking that it acts as a secondary router or a booster rather than a primary router . I still need the BT homehub?
if anyone can help that would be great
    CS J

You should either return the Time Capsule or upgrade your Mac at least to OS X 10.7.

  • Adobe Extension Manager says I don't have the latest version of photoshop. I am trying to install the watermark panel.

Hi. I am trying to install the watermark panel plugin. I installed the extension manager, and when I tried to install the plugin, the extension manager said I don't have the latest version of photoshop. I thought when you paid into the creative cloud you get all the latest versions?  Lance

The Creative Cloud has three versions of Photoshop version 13, 14 and 15.  You can install the ones you want I have them and CS2 installed.

I want to buy the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive. But I need to install it on more one than machine, could I do this??

This is what the Licence says on the store page of the OS X Lion Thumb Drive:

  • I have a laptop, not a Mac. I am trying to install the icloud, an it won't let me because of the administrator, what can I or must I do at this point?

I am trying to install iCloud on my laptop. It is not an Apple product. I keep getting a message saying Administrator won't allow. What can I do to override it?

You have to contact someone with administrator priveledges on that PC.

  • IBook G3 (dual usb) hard drive specs?

Is there anyone who can tell me the full specs on the hdd's that come with these computers? I've searched everywhere, and can't seem to find any information on it.
Most importantly, I'd like to know what kind of connectivity it uses. I know that Macintosh computers during this period of time pretty much had all there own proprietary hardware, but I'd like to see if I can't buy an external enclosure that I could hook this hdd into. My dad's lappy had the infamous logic board problem, and I'd like to be able to back up all the data he had on his G3 iBook, because some of it pertained to an important event with his business that he kinda needs his documents for.
If it helps, it's an A1005, according to the case.

Actually Macintosh computer hardware of that time was no more or less proprietary than common PC notebook machines. Many replaceable parts were far from proprietary. They were using industry standard IDE hard drives and industry standard DDR memory modules. Of course the batteries were proprietary, but that's common for every single notebook computer manufacturer I've every heard of. Apple had gone to USB earlier than most PC makers and most common USB devices work well on a Mac. The processors and chipsets weren't the same ones that PC makers were using, but most of the common parts were no different.
As was said earlier, a common enclosure should be able to do the trick. I personally don't like the term "enclosure" because it doesn't adequately describe what it does. I sometimes call them "interface bridges" for the part that serves as a communications bridge between the hard drive interface and the USB or FireWire interface.
