I have a home office with 2 networked computers (desktop and laptop). I am tryong to open my business file ( a regular file but with the little arrow on the bottom left side )"the alias" and am getting this message: There was an error connecting to the server idisk.mac.com Check server name or IP address, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator. So I click "ok" and FINDER comes up sayiong the alias can't be opened because the original item cannot be found....
I have called for a technician to come out but they can't come until next week and I can't work. I have already tried powering down, which worked in the past to "reset" the server.
Can anyone help?

It sounds like the original of that file is stored on your iDisk, a service which Apple no longer provides. Go to this page, sign in and download all of the files that are still on there.

Are you sure your iPhone is signed into the same iTunes Store account as iTunes on your computer?

If you have the horizontal menu bar showing (File, Edit, View,...), select View, then select Show Sidebar.
If the menu bar is not showing, dorp down the menu in the very upper left corner and select show menu bar, then follow steps above.

Home office with MacbookPro

Hi Mac People ... I have a 15" MacbookPro that goes everywhere I go. I am a heavy user. I am taking on more marketing-related responsibilities and will be needing more screen space for running Aperture, iMovie, iBookAuthor, mail, im, Pages, Stickies, etc. I'm shopping for helpful components to create a user-friendly home office in the corner of my dining room. Big win ... I've convinced my wife to allow installation of dual monitor arms mounted on wall. And I have the chair arriving today. Here are my questions ....
1) Can I hook up the MacbookPro to display and run programs across multiple monitors?
2) Is there a wireless keyboard you would recommend? Wireless mouse? (presuming better then working off macbookpro keyboard)
3) if I have cabled monitors, wireless keyboard and mouse ... then the Macbook Pro can be left untouched while I'm working?
4) are there other wireless devices to be considered to make the workspace optimal?

We are currently running CS3 Suite on it but would like to upgrade to CS4. Can you tell me if this will handle it? We can not afford to upgrade to CS5 right now because we would have to do it on 2 - 3 computers. We can buy the CS4 upgrade.
All we really need is to upgrade is Acrobat, Indesign and Illustrator, if that's an option. We don't need all the extra apps.
I'd appreciate any feedback. If we can't upgrade this Mac we might have to switch to a PC.

How to have a shared library with 2 networked macs?

Like many people I have a laptop (leopard) and a desktop (tiger) in my home, and I'd like to have a shared iPhoto library so I can download/access/edit the pictures to be available on both macs. For the laptop this would have to be set up wirelessly, and I'm thinking a large external drive is the best solution (I'd like to do the same with my iTunes library too, but I guess that's a different discussion). I'm about to install iPhoto 09 on both machines, so can anyone give me instructions on how to do this? Thank you.

The key factor here is the version of iLife - they need to be the same on both machines. However iPhoto 09 requires 10.5.6 minimum, so you’ll need to upgrade the OS on the 10.4 machine.
What do you mean by ‘Share’?
If you want the other machine to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and enable 'Look For Shared Libraries' on the other Machine. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
You can drag pics from the Shared Library to the machine’s own Library in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both machines for this to work.
If you want both machiens to have the same access to the library: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
Quit iPhoto on both machines
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
Note This disk should be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Storing libraries on disks formatted any other way can lead to issues with importing, sharing and editing.
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both machines will have full access to the library, in fact, both machines will 'own' it.
*Note 2* there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
*Note 3* A wireless connection is perfectly adequate for viewing photos in a Library. However, it is not suited for editing or organising photos in an iPhoto Library. Drop outs are part and parcel of wireless networking. Should one occur while the app is writing to the DB then the database will be corrupted.

est computer. Now when I use my wiped computer it comes up saying that all product keys are taken. How do I check to see if she has the same key number as the old one I have? Does Firefox support video teleconferencing using a MAC desktop? I need to establish a home office with Skype or a video teleconference online...

My system is a MAC desktop with wide screen. I need to be available for video teleconference appts between Montana and Seattle. MAC products support this need. I want to know if Firefox has a program that I could be using for video teleconferencing.

To make MPEG video, MPEG-1 still being very popular on the interweb, use Toast. DivX is another fave, Toast does that too, actually has an export button on the video page to do that.
To do MPEG-1 you use the video tab and the VCD setting. Make the VCD save as a real CD or better an image. Mount the image and drag the file called AVSEQ01.DAT (or very similar name, the DAT file) to the desktop.
That is a proper MPEG-1 file you can rename to Movie.mpg if you like and you should, for others to understand.
In MPEG Streamclip you can edit/cut/trim it if it is not just right and then export to MPEG again and you are done.
Note you can do MPEG-2 by making a DVD then mounting THAT image and dragging off the VOB files that have numbers in them, open the lower numbered one in MPEG Streamclip , it will offer to open them all, fix timecode errors and you can cut and trim that too, and export as MPEG. MPEG-2 this time, rather large for the web though.

HP Office 8600 on network computers can't find

I just installed an office pro 8600 it shows on the network with an IP address, but none of the computers on the network can find printer. Printer works on all computers when usb is plugged in. I have disabled firewalls, virus protection, made sure that hp is allowed in firewall, Could someone please tell me how to get the printer recognized wirelessly?

To make a new site or not? (for branch office with small number of people)

We have a main office, with our DC (DC01) and a single site (SiteHO), and we are about to open up a new branch office in another city. This branch office is connected to the head office via a 5 Mbps MPLS network. The branch office will have around
5-7 domain joined workstations, and the people there will require access to the existing file and exchange servers in the head office.
I was thinking about not adding a RODC in the branch office and not creating another site in AD for the branch office either. My thinking is that since the number of users is relatively low, it doesn't warrant having a new RODC and site. The
traffic generated by the 5-7 user logon activities will be minimal, and the local profiles are stored on the workstations (no roaming profiles), so there shouldn't be much WAN link impact. Obviously I would have to add the subnet from the branch office
to the SiteHO site.
Can anybody think of something wrong with my reasoning?

I think the dedicated line has a little to do with AD since its used both to authenticate the users and move the data.
I am not sure what bandwith you get from an internet provider in your location, but for example you might get a 100Mb internet connection from an ISP. A VPN tunnel over a 100Mb internet connection I am guessing is faster then a 5Mb guaranteed MPLS link.
The advantage of MPLS is that you can have QoS policies for voice and video traffic.
If users move 'very large files' perhaps a local file server might be an good option. DFS replication can save a lot of bandwidth in that case. And then you would have 'local resources' in the branch and in case of wan failure the users will not be able
to access the local file server resource. So you would need a secondary DC in that location.
And if they are moving the files think (and check) the impact on the MPLS, because authentication requests go through that link, Exchange traffic (RPC MAPI) goes through that link so these might be affected. For example, lets say you have 2GB mailboxes.
All Outlook users use OST files. One user's profile gets corrupted and needs to be rebuilt. The Outlook client sets up a fresh OST copy of the mailbox so now its downloading a 2GB mailbox copy over a 5Mb MPLS while some other user is moving a 'large file'.
By local resources I am referring to file servers, printers, applications in the branch location that require AD authentication. Authentication works with both VPN and MPLS and in case the wan/vpn is down users can even log in with
cached credentials.

I have installed star office on a networked computer where the users profile and application data is situated on a win 2003 server (roaming profiles and folder redirection)
in a stand alone environment i.e no folder redirection the product works great with no problems
(on the same computer)
when i log in as a user that has folder redirection in place the software overall becomes very un-responsive
Symptoms
Launcher taking upto 30-40 seconds to open
Once program is open just simple things like opening the file menu can cause the program to become unresposive (not responding message in toolbar)
then maybe after 2--40 seconds it will come alive again
all the time this is happening i am able to access other programs on the computer without any problems
I have tried this on several computers in the office and its the same on all of them, the computer i am doing my main testing on, is a brand new DELL system dual core with 1Gb RAM and windows XP service pack 3
Any help or suggestions welcome

I'm having the exact same problem. When using roaming profiles and folder redirection StarOffice is often not responding when using commands as save, open etc. Often it becames alive again after a few minutes, but sometimes not.
I'm using a Linux server with Fedora and Samba. Clients are WinXPpro with Staroffice8.
All computers in the company has the same problem.

I've registered facetime in my iphone using my uk telephone number. Now I move to another country and want to use facetime using my email account since my home country's telephone networks do not support facetime application, I think.

The telephone network doesn't support Face Time regardless of the country.
There are some countries where FaceTime is not allowed because of local laws.
Where are you? If it's anywhere in the Middle East, you're out of luck.

MBP: Network issue. Internet:good. Seeing our network computers:not so good

I am new to Mac. I purchased a MBP 15" (2.4 GHz) about 10 days ago. Overall, I like the Mac experience. There have been some wireless issues (that there are many posts on) that I think we resolved that issue.
I am currently puzzled by the following problem:
I can connect wirelessly and/or with an ethernet cable to access the internet and email BUT I can no longer "see" the local networked computers. I have seen them and accessed them to transfer files (photos, music etc...). The other computers in our home can "see" the networked computers but my MBP cannot (and I worked over the network after resolving the wireless issue).
Any advice/solutions/info/references?

Have you contacted Vodaphone to see if they are having an issue? That would be the logical place to start.
