  • Will iLife be deleted when I erase my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard and the Applications with the disks that came with the computer?

I plan to restore my computer to factory settings to have a fresh start but i dont know if all the ilife applications will still be there (imovie, iphoto, etc). Or is the ilife applications included in the Applications Install DVD?

Yes, they are, unless you have a machine which shipped with Mac OS X Server, in which case you wouldn't have them to begin with.

I interrupted a software update and my macbook pro will not boot. I have tried to reboot using the startup disc, I have tried to verify the disc, and repair the disc. It tells me I need to erase and reformat the hard drive then reinstall the operating system. I do not have a back up of all my applications, my garageband music and other things. I also do not have time capsule set up on this machine, but I do have a 2 TB time capsule.
Is there anyway to back up this corrupted drive so I can restore my applications later?

There's an old saying.  If you don't have a backup disc, then there must be nothing important to backup.  That's just lesson #1.  Lesson #2 is to never interrupt a software update.  Not a good thing.
OK, I'm sure you know this.  It just upsets me to read your story, knowing you have a lot of important stuff on your hard drive, and didn't use time machine.
You're pretty much in a bad place.  My only hope for you is to boot to your Installation Disc, then using disk utility see if you can save the internal hard drive (by fixing what can be fixed).  You might be able to see your user folder and some of your apps.  I wouldn't even consider copying the library, because who knows what's been corrupted in there.
    Good luck.

This is a MacBook Pro 15" (Model number A1286) running Mavericks. Hard drive is fine but system software has been corrupted. I cannot simply restore from Time Machine as it will copy the corrupt system.
Will I have to find all of my serial numbers before I can launch any of the programs?
    Thanks

  • I have an Aspire M5 laptop that I had to replace the hard drive in.

This computer is out of warranty.  I actually took the computer to a business to have the hard drive replaced I also bought e-recovery discs from the acer store.  It took forever to get my computer to run the discs but I finally got that done.  After the message came up telling me to remove the final disc the computer continued on with some other processes that didn't ask for any action on my part.  Then it came to a screen that said  "Software Installation" and it hung on 12/63.  I left the computer sitting over night and it is still hung there.  I have no idea how to stop this installation.  It has been hung on software installation since Saturday morning. This is a touch screen laptop so when it starts up it comes up on my tiles/apps screen and then you click on the desk top tile to go to the traditional desk top, well the desk top side is where it is hung.  That means that everything I try to do is locked out by this software installation that is non-responsive.  I have tried the Acer Recovery Management but that takes you to the desk top-which is still hung!  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

The only problem is that software installation has the desk top side locked up.  When I do ctrl+alt+del and then click to end task, it takes me back to the locked up desk top.

Reduce data off of it so it's less than 80% filled, use a external drive.

  • My dvd superdrive doesn't work....I have licenses for Snow leopard ( upgrading a 2007 MBP) but don't know how to download it w/o buying it again...

want to use my last license for snow leopard in my old 2007 (2.16Ghz, core 2 duo w/ 4 GB ram) but my Superdive is broken. can I download the snow leopard and then put my license code in some where? I don't want to buy it again...if I don't have to...just trying to get to Mavericks....and I am one OS short...

    Hi John,
If you have another Mac with Firewire & a working Optical drive, you can use that to Install it.
Check whether you need a 6 pin to 9 pin FW cable or whatever each end has.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Put the Install DVD in the the other Mac, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the other Mac holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot the this Mac holding the Option/alt key down, eventually the Install Disk will show as a Boot Option on this one.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

I have a rather old iMac 20" (mid 2007) and I want to upgrade the Hard drive. How do I change it? How do I transfer all my applications? May I just copy the old hd into the new one? Thanks.

There are many online tutorials on how to change out the HD on a mid 2007 iMac. One of the originals is from 2007 and is Upgrade your iMac 20" or iMac 24" aluminum (mid 2007) to 1TB Hard Drive and 4 GB RAM - DIY Guide. As far as migrating your system Apple helps out with that in Setup Assistant which automatically starts when you turn on a new Mac for the first time. After you have installed the new HD you will have to format the new HD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then you will have to install OS X. The first time you turn it on Setup Assistant will start. Follow the directions and you will be fine. In order to restore your information you will need to backup what is on the current internal HD first. I'd recommend using Time Machine (Assuming you are using Leopard or later) AND also creating a bootable clone using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Please complete your profile so at the very least we know what version of OS X your machine has installed.

Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".
    Then, install OS X.

The largest capacity HDD that you can install is the HGST 1.5 TB HDD:

Any 2.5" 9.5mm thick SATA HDD will fit and operate in your MBP, regardless of capacity.
