I have a iPod video/black 80Gb 5th generation and my battery never lasts more than 30 mintues or less.

Is this a matter of getting a new battery, maybe a service? Or something more technical?
I've charged the unit for hours although it always shows fully charged symbol within an 1 hour.
It functions fine when plugged in, updated and synced.
Only real problem is it turns of in 30 minutes or less with only the very low battery fading into the screen.
Any help/advice happily accepted

Yes.  It sounds like the iPod's battery is on its last leg.  If you want to keep using your iPod you'll want to have the battery replaced either by Apple, a third party company, or you can even buy the replacement part and swap it out yourself.
If you want to go through Apple's site, see here: http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipod
