I have a Kernal Panic and may need to reinstall Tiger

I have a 20" G5 with iSight and now have a Kernal Panic. I'm backing up all of my data and think that reinstalling the OS may take care of my problem. Unfortunately, I have no idea where my original OS install disk is. Any idea how I can get a new one?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button.The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure.In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

    Experimental advice ... but, plausibly, the preference files containing the parental control setting may be damaged. If so, removing the iTunes preference files may help.
    For the basic technique, see the "Remove iTunes preference files" section from the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:
    iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
    To see those folders, you'll need to first set your PC to view hidden files and folders
    In your Start menu, open Computer.
    In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
    In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
    Prior to doing the preference file rebuilds: Best to make a note of any custom preferences you have set up for your iTunes. (Rebuilding pref files returns preferences to their defaults ... so you'll likely have to set some of those custom preferences up again from scratch.) Also make a note of any third-party plugins/add-ons you have installed. You may have to reinstall those after the rebuilds.
    Things to watch out for during the rebuilds
    Rebuilding the preference files in the \Local\ location causes the iTunes license agreement to run. So you'll need to agree to that again.
    Rebuilding the preference files in the \Roaming\ location causes the iTunes Setup Assistant to run. When prompted to do so, do not add files to your iTunes library. (Otherwise you'll end up with a library full of duplicates.)

  • What the heck is a "Kernal panic" and how can I fix this?

    Lately, several of my partitions (external firewire) running OS 10.3.9 have crashed and are no longer bootable. one partition crashed upon being turned on, and said that there was 'no driver for powerbook 6, 5' and 'kernal stopping here...' I started up from a different partition, and installed the latest security update, and that repaired my kernal, but now for some reason, I am not an 'administrator,' but I am the only user of this computer. any suggestions?
    someone had this happen in class, and I found out that the problem that I was experiencing was called a 'kernal panic,' and now I want to know why this happens, how to prevent this from happening, and the best software tool to check the health of my system folder. anyone got any suggestions?
    I'm considering installing a clean version of OS 10.3.3, and updating to 10.3.9, but if there is a faster way to fix this, then I'm all ears! thanks!

    Patddfan:
    From your description of what is happening it does not sound like a kernel panic. See What’s a kernel panic. In terms of what to do see: Resolving Kernel Panics
    I suspect that your HDD is in serious need of maintenance. Here's what I would do:
    1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. In the left panel select your HDD (manufacturer ID), and in the main panel select the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    2. Boot from your install disk. Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left panel and First Aid in main panel. Click Repair Disk. If DU reports disk needs no repair quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors, click Repair again, and again until DU reports the disk is repaired. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    3. Download MacJanitor and run all the procedures, the follow regular schedule.
    4. Take a look at Gulliver's article Mac OS X System Maintenance and implement procedures.
    Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • New Kernal Panic question - Help needed desperate!

    Hi All,
    This is the first time I have used the Forum and am hoping that someone can help. I'm having a huge issue with my iMac G5. I had iTunes playing two days ago and no other programmes open at the time. I left my desk for no more the 10 minutes and when I returned I had a message in four languages telling me to restart my computer. I have tried this but now when I try to turn on my iMac, the only screen I get now is the kernal panic and then the fans kick in really loud. Now comes the part where you sit there and shake your head at me! I have read that I should press the option key when turning the iMac back on, the only problem is, I don't know which is the option key!! If someone could let me know it would be much appreciated. Also any other advise would be great as I have no idea what to do.

    Hi RYork,
    Which model of iMac G5 do you have? Is it:
    a) one of the original iMac G5's, sold new up til the beginninhg of May 2005,
    b) one of the "ALS" models , with a little "light sensor" bump on the back of the grill on the bottom edge of the computer, an inchor two to the right of the big "Apple" Logo, sold between late April and October, 2005, or
    c) one of the later models with a built in iSight camera, sold after October 12th, 2005?
    THe first step here ideally involves resetting the SMU of the computer. The process differs depending on the model that you have. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 for the two later models and dot point 2, paragraph 9 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 for the more complicated process for the original "first generation" model .
    You should disconnect all peripherals other than your keyboard and mouse when troubleshooting this sort of problem. USB hubs and USB ADSL routers are particularly common causes of problems, so make sure you lose both of these especially hwile trying to find the problem. As you have indicated that you are suspicious of your keyboard you may even want to try restarting with it disconnected , too, after trying the SMU reset.
    The option key is called the "alt" in the UK. Using this is only going to help if you have a second disc with an operating system to start from though. This could be the iMac G5 DVD that came with your computer, or an external firewire drive with a system installed on it.
    If your computer is one of the "first generation" models mentioned above it is quite possible that you have a serious hardware problem. There is an "extension repair" program in place for these computers, even if they are out of warranty, because of the well known hardware problems, so check the details of the program at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302181 .
    You say that your husband has a laptop, but you don't say whether it is an Apple or not. If it is then it may be possible to undertake some further troubleshooting using something called "Target Disk Mode", so let us know what it is.
    But this keyboard has me worried first of all. If an SMU reset doesn't solve the problem, then disconnect EVERYTHING and see if the computer will now start up before going further down the troubleshooting path.
    Cheers

    Hello @arijyou123,
    Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
    I understand that you're not able to configure your HP Deskjet 3521 e-All-in-One Printer for wireless printing with your Mac OS X 10.7 computer. I'd like to assist you with configuring the wireless today.
    You will need a USB Cable for the wireless setup.
    Can I have you start by clicking here. When the website opens, select the Download button on the top left. Allow the download to complete. Once the download is finished please launch the installer on your Mac.
    Follow any onscreen steps to complete the installation of your printer. If prompted please select the 'Wireless Setup Using a USB Connect'. Plug in your USB Cable when prompted. Your wireless information (Network Name SSID and Wireless password) will be sent to the printer via the USB Cable connection. Once the wireless connection has been established, you will no longer need the USB Cable.
    For further information on the wireless setup please refer to: Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless network
    Please respond to this post with the result of your wireless setup. Should the wireless configuration still fail, please respond with any error messages that you may receive or when exactly the setup fails. I look forward to hearing from you!

    Hello,
    You have calculated the number of black pixels using a histogram, right? This is the simple part.
    this is how i would approach the problem:
    OPTION 1: calculate the linear magnification of your system, using the equation M = f/(f-d) = hi/ho. f is the focal lenght [mm] and d is the distance of the object from the lense [mm]. You can calculate the magnification by placing an object of known height (ho) at the distance d, and calculate the illuminated pixels (hi). Then multiply the pixels with the physical pixel size in mm. When magnification is know, you can always calculate the object size, based on the number of illuminated pixels. But this is only for the specified distance d. If the distance changes, the magnification changes also. If your area covers let's say 50 pixels, arrange it in 50 columns and 1 row. Calculate the object size using first 50 pixels and second using 1 pixel (if the pixel size in different in both directions, take this into account when calculating). Then multiply the calculated object sizes to get the area.
    OPTION 2: calibrate the camera system in order to obtain the fx and fy [pix]. Calibration is really simple - use the NI Calibration training interface. Calculate the actual focal lenght in both directions:
    fY[mm] = sensor_height[mm] * fy[pix]/sensor_height[pix]
    fX[mm] = sensor_width[mm] * fx[pix]/sensor_width[pix]
    Let's say that the area of the pixels on your image is Ap. Let's also say that we "arrange" it in Ap columns and 1 row. Calculate the actual object size in X direction:
    OX[mm] = Ap * Pw[mm] * d[mm]/fX[mm]
    and in the Y direction:
    OY[mm] = 1 * Ph[mm] * d[mm]/fY[mm]
    where Pw is the element sensor element size in horizontal and Ph in vertical direction [pix].
    Then calculate the real-world area by OX*OY [mm^2].
    You also need the distance d here - the previous post describes how to calculate this.
    Also, hopefully, someone with more experience could comment on what i wrote above. Maybe there is a simpler solution? I am also learning stuff as i go, so any comment would be appreciated.
    Hope this helps you get started.
    Best regards,
    K

    There's no way to merge them yet, so all you can do now is make 1 of them the master ID for iCloud. You have to continue to use the other for previous iTunes, Mac App Store updates. Have you read:

    The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.

    You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

    Instead of getting a wireless card for the Mac Pro, you might want to consider getting an 802.11ac wireless bridge device that would enable you to connect more than one device to it by Ethernet cable and to eventually take advantage of the faster 802.11ac wireless standard.
