I have a laptop with a bad hard drive,  my iTunes library is on an external hardrive. How do I move iTUnes to a new computer and have it work?

I have my iTunes Library all saved on an external hard drive.  I have iTunes on the desktop of my laptop.  The hard drive in my laptop is going bad.  How do I move iTunes to another computer and be able to use my external hard drive?  This may be easier than I might think.  I hope so.
Thanks

Hey oob,
Thanks for the question. You may find the information in the following article helpful in moving your iTunes library via external drive:

Can you locate the iTunes Library.itl file on the old drive? Ideally you would have simply copied over the entire iTunes folder structure from <User's Music> on the old computer into <User's Music> on the new one to transfer the library will all playlists, ratings, play counts etc. intact.

An iPod can pn;y sync wiht one iTunes kibrary and the new computer is a new iTunes library:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party probgram like one of those dicussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup

i have moved mu itunes to a new computer and my ipod will not sync with new music.

If you are using automatic syncing, you may need to set up the iPod's Music tab in iTunes.
Select the iPod in iTunes.  There is a row of "tabs" (starting with Summary).  Select Music there.  This is the Music tab, where you tell iTunes how to sync the iPod with songs.  Sync Music is checkmarked for automatic syncing.
If your entire iTunes music library can fit on the nano, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then, create your selection of songs below.  For example, if you want to keep it simple, create a new playlist in iTunes.  Put ALL songs you want on the iPod on that playlist, including songs from the newly added music.  Back on the Music tab, find and checkmark that new playlist under Playlists.
When you click Apply, your selection of songs on the Music tab syncs to the iPod, replacing its current content.  Going forward, any changes that are related to the Music tab settings sync automatically when you connect the iPod, or when you click Sync.  So, if there is a playlist with your "iPod songs," you can just update that playlist (add and remove songs) whenever you want; iTunes updates the iPod with the same changes at the next opportunity.

Yes. I have no personal experience with this, but it is possible to recover your music from an iPod. See this link: http://guides.macrumors.com/Recovering_Songs_from_an_iPod

The ipod is not a backup device.  The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  the exception is itunes purchases.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old comptuer, to your new one.

  • Issues with iphoto after hard drive failure - message "library was created with an unreleased version of iphoto"

I have a late model 2008 13" MacBook that was running OS X 10.5.8 when the hard drive failed 2 weeks ago when I was traveling in Canada. I found a Mac repair centre and they replaced my 250GB with a 500GB hard drive and transferred my data.  (Yeah!!!) I'm now on OS X 10.6.8 (which is great as I guess I should be able to sync my iphone on IOS 7 with my laptop again.... but I digress...)
I haven't been able to access my photos as I get the message "The photo library was created with an unreleased version of iphoto. Please quit and upgrade this photo library by opening it in iphoto 2 or iphoto 4" when I try to open it.  I can see my photos when I look on Photo Browser in Mail so that's good - they are here...  I looked through past messages with this problem and saw that the advise was to download iphoto Library Manager.  I want to be certain I don't mess anything up so the questions are:
    1. What version of iphoto Library Manager should I download - I had OS X 10.5.8 and my iphoto library was ... (sorry - can't find out what it was, guess it's now 7.1.5)
    2. What do I do after I've downloaded IPLM?
Many thanks ahead of time for any assistance

I backed up my iPhoto Library to an external drive even though it looked way to small to hold all my photos.  I have tried several times to open iPhoto whilst depressing the option and command keys but get the same message again:
"The photo library was created with an unreleased version of iphoto. Please quit and upgrade this photo library by opening it in iphoto 2 or iphoto 4"  Behind this, the little wheel is turning and it says "Loading Photos" (but it doesn't).
I've got to access these photos for a project deadline that's looming so any help would be really appreciated.

  • I have a backup of my itunes music.  How do i move it to my new computer?

I was able to retrieve files from my old computer before it crashed.  I now have a new computer but I don't know how to move those files to the new computer and access itunes.  Please help!!

If you made a copy of your entire iTunes library, the last section of this knowledge base article should explain how to restore it, if not, could you tell me what form your backup is in, in the sense of what folders you managed to copy from your old computer?

  • Can I use my time capsule with a bad hard drive as a wireless router if I remove the hard drive?

I have a 500 GB time capsule with a failed HD (i've repalced the whole machine with a new time capsule).  I cannot get past the start up when I plug it in and the light glows a solid amber.  If I remove the hard drive can I use it as just a wireless router to exted my network?

Yes, although the existing power supply might go bad before long.. you can run the TC as just an AEBS..
It is a fairly easy job to get the hd out.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Key to it is using hot air gun or even a hair dryer on really high temp lowest fan and spend enough time getting to glue to soften.

  • Using my Mac to Boot a PC with a bad hard drive...

    Hello all,
I have a Dell laptop with a blown-out hard drive (big surprise). I want to figure out a way to access it from my Mac, I feel like there should be a way to do this...
Do I have to be running Windows? (because I don't, and won't)

First things first, if your laptop hard drive is blown then do not try booting up the laptop anymore as any further attempts to boot will significantly impact your chances of successfully recovering any data from the hard drive.
    Your best bet for recovering any data from the drive is to buy a either of the following;
    a) a external IDE or SATA laptop drive enclosure
    e.g.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Market-Express-External-Enclosure-Silver/dp/B001IYMC7Q/r ef=sr12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227952799&sr=8-2
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/MY-Link-USB2-0-External-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B000MRJIEA/re f=sr13?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227952799&sr=8-3
    or
    b) a device like the Magic Bridge II or similar
    http://heisei.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008800559562/pdtl/LAN-card/1003 474567/Magic-Bridge-II-Dual-Interface-Storage-Bridge.htm
Note: I have no affiliation with either amazon or Heisei other then owning a Magic Bridge II myself for precisely the same predicament as the one you find yourself in now.
Both of these options will require that you remove the hard drive from the laptop and hook it up to either the enclosure or the Magic Bridge II.
Once the hard drive is hooked up you will then be able to plug the hard drive into your iMac or another PC and if you're lucky, the hard drive will spin up and be available as a new volume on the computer.
If you have a small amount of data you need to recover then you can pull off whatever data you need onto the host computer.
If you need to recover the majority of the drive then you can use a Windows PC to do the recovery and have something like Paragon Drive Image, Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost then use that to make an image of the whole hard drive. Using an imaging tool will enable you to make a complete backup of the drive in the shortest possible time.
Have just remembered that you said that you don't want to use/won't use a Windows PC, so in this case you can also use CCC or SuperDuper on the Mac to make a backup of the drive in question.
Once the drive becomes available you then need to copy whatever data you need off the drive as quickly as possible. This is because, in my experience at least, once hard drives start to fail they invariably fail quicker and more often once they have reached their normal operating temperature. The hard drive bearings can also wear out and this can lead to read/write failures, another reason why the recovery process needs to be as quick as possible.
Should you fail to recover the data you need at this stage then your only realistic option is to hand the drive to a data recovery company for them to make a best attempt at recovery.

  • I am getting a new computer and i play an online game where i have many accounts with seperate emails and passwords. how do i move them to the new computer

i would love to find out how i can transfer the saved passwords from one computer to the new computer
or is there a way that i can save the passwords in some sort of cloud or by registering them with firefox

You can copy the two files signons.sqlite (Firefox 32+: logins.json) and key3.db from the Firefox profile folder to the profile folder on the other computer.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
