I have a late 2009 MacBook Pro 13.3". The unit keeps restarting w/o finishing boot up.

After Firefox updated it suggested a new version of Flashplayer should be installed. During this operation a dialog box asked for thepassword. As this is primarily my wife’s computer I did not have it, so Idecided to wait for her to arrive. I left the computer waiting for the passwordand closed the lid. When my wife got home I opened the computer expecting herto continue the installation.  Idiscovered the unit had apparently shut down, and tried to turn it backon.  I got a gray screen with an Applelogo and spinning wheel, after about one minute the computer shut down againwithout completing boot.  After a fewattempts to reboot without success, I discovered it would complete the startupif I kept my finger moving on the touchpad. After a few minutes a dialog box popped up asking if I wanted to shutdown.  I answered ‘cancel’ and after afew seconds the box popped up again. After a few iterations of this the computer shut down again.  I have tried several suggested fixes for thisbehavior from this forum and none have kept this from happening.  The behavior has however changed and the computerhas gone through several modes of malfunction. From continually trying to restart, to appearing completely dead.  At this point the computer tries to restartover and over when not on th e charger. If plugged in I can boot to the desktop as long as I keep activity on the touchpad. Within a few seconds of no activity, the dialog box appears asking torestart, sleep, cancel, or shut down. I can shut down without trying to restartas long as it is plugged in. But as soon as I remove the magsafe connector itstarts a cycle of continuous restarts even with the lid closed.  Any suggestions?

It's probably a hardware fault, but to be thorough, you should boot from your installation DVD and run "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Permissions"). If any problems are found with the directory of the boot volume, after repairing it run the Installer to reinstall the OS. Then reboot if possible, run Software Update, and test.
Needless to say, you must back up all data before you do any of this, which you can do while booted from the installation disc. If you do have a hardware fault, none of it will help.

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

    15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009
Processor:  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory:  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software:  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 5,3 Unibody that won't run anything past Leopard.

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 5,3 Unibody that suffered a minor liquid spill.  After waiting for it to dry out, we found that it powers up (but the display doesn't work unless connected to an external monitor) just fine.  For several months it worked like a tank running Snow Leopard.  I upgraded to Lion with no problems.  Once the 10.7.1 update came out, it completely flipped out and wouldn't finish the install.  I was forced to take it all the way back to Leopard and now it won't upgrade past Leopard.  I replaced the hard drive completely and tried a fresh install of Lion using the thumb drive and that didn't work either.  I got the set of errors you will find below.  (Sorry, I don't know how to hide them like you can in some forums.)  Any ideas or suggestions on why it won't install Lion would be great.  I'm not so concerned about the display as wondering why it worked for 4 months and then another month on Lion and then suddenly flipped out on me.  I'm not knowledgeable enough to decipher the message below.

Might have a hardware issue that was caused by the minor liquid spill.
Take it to Apple to have them look at it.  I think they do a free diagnostics.  That way you can find out what's wrong with your MB.
Good luck....Hope you get it sorted out.

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
AirPlay Mirroring is supported on your Mac, but it needs OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
    You have two possibilities:
    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion to upgrade to this OS X. Then, you will find the AirPlay Mirroring icon at the top right of the display, on the menu bar, or on System Preferences > Displays.
    2. Keep OS X Lion and use AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com
Both options work properly, but I recommend AirPlay Mirroring as it doesn't need a third-party program

  • I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to Mavericks OS.  The screen died and it's not worth replacing.  How do I remove the hard drive and use a drive sled to access info I need?

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS.  The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model.  I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need?  What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases.  How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive.  Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?
I know this is lengthy.  Thanks to whoever looks at this and offers advice/instruction.

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later.  A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install a 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista version in your Mac. Make sure you downloaded these drivers > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630 Also, if you have the Snow Leopard DVD you used to upgrade your Mac or the OS X DVD that came with your Mac, you can use it to install the Boot Camp drivers

If you are using airplay then that should be fine once the content is playing. You can't use home-sharing in this manner however.

Sorry ... I read but was unfortunately distracted from your original post.  You have a system that came with Lion.  The Lion that is on your system is only for your computer and cannot be downloaded from the app store again because you never purchased it officially through the App Store.
Try this for making an external USB/DVD copy of Recovery on an external disk.  internet is still required for reinstall, though, I believe: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848.  But at least you have a separate Recovery Partition if you ever need a fully new and empty internal disk.
Your assumption is incorrect. Although he may not be able to download it from the App store he can download it directly for the Apple servers using the recovery partition on his original drive.
All you have to do is start the install routine and then point the install to an external hard drive. Once the download is finished the computer will reboot to start the install. At that reboot disconnect the external drive so the install can not start. Boot the computer back into the OS on the internal hard drive, which is what will happen automatically once the external drive is disconnected. Then connect the external and copy the files from it that were downloaded. Right click on that downloaded package file and select Show contents. In the contents of that package is a file called InstallESD.DMG. Copy that file out of the package and burn it down to a DVD or USB thumb drive and you now have the Full Lion Installer. I have several of them laying around on different hard drives and 2 USB thumb drives which I have used to reinstall Lion on my 15" MBP.
Sorry OP I should of just typed this out in my first post.

How many hours does a brand new battery last after fully charged. I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro.

clintonfrombirmingham is right, there is no way to exactly tell. But from personal experience, a new battery on a 2008 will last for about 2 1/2 hours with a higher screen brightness and doing something taxing to the battery (like gaming or running lots of 3D programs). But if you're just listening to music with the brightness all the way down, and no programs running, you could get up to 12 hours. So for average use, it should last you a whole business day (assuming you don't use it more than 30% 0f the time). Hope this kind of gives you more of an idea of what to expect:)

  • I have a late 2009 macbook and was curious if it is possible to upgrade the processor and if its worth it??

I have a late 2009 Macbook Unibody and was curious about upgrading the processor. I just installed 8gigs of ram and was thinking about just trying to make it really fast. I am always in Adobe CS5.5 for my job and want my computer to be as fast as I can make it. Is it possible to install a new processor and is it worth it??
    Thanks

No, the processor and the video card are integrated into the logic board.

  • I have a late 2011 macbook pro and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated

I have a late 2011 macbook pro running OSX Lion, and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated. Im wondering what can i do to stop this or get it to update.

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.
