I have a local LAN DNS server. My preferences point to that server. Why does dig give me 8.8.8.8 as my DNS server?
Something is/was modifying my DNS preferences to 8.8.8.8 It seems to be pointed correctly now (at my local LAN DNS server), but why was it pointed at 8.8.8.8 before? I never want it pointed to 8.8.8.8

You've hit the nail on the head Ben.  For point to point communications, the IP addresses should be fixed, therefore there is no need for DNS.  If a DNS is configured, the NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers will try to contact it.
In my test system, I need DNS for the test computer, but I am communicating with a dedicated Spectrum Analyzer over TCP/IP.  So I added a second NIC.  The main NIC is configured for DNS and all that jazz.  The second NIC (plugged into PCI slot) is configured with a hard coded address, no DNS, no Gateway, nothing else.  I connect that NIC to the spectrum analyzer using a crossover cable.  The analyzer is configured with a hard coded address also.  Now my computer can get on our company network, and the spectrum analyzer is isolated from the network, so it can't catch any viruses, etc., and it still talks to the computer.  When using a configuration such as this, it is best to use a dedicated address for the 2nd NIC and spectrum analyzer in the range of 192.168.100.0 to 254

  • If I have two iTunes accounts, and only want one to update my apps why does the other account keep opening?

Here's the issue-I have two iTunes accounts, yet account #1 always comes up when I want to update my apps. This occurs even when account #2 is logged in and has been synced from desktop to iPad. Additionally,Account #2 is logged in on the iPad and yet account #1 prompt appears when updating. Interestingly account #2 functions normal for iTunes purchases but not apps purchases. Any suggestions?

Apps will ALWAYS be tied to the account from which they were purchased.  You will always have to update the apps from the account from which they were purchased.

  • My wife and I have the same Verizon Ellipsis 7 MV7A we received from Verizon. Why does mine show ROM of 5gib but hers shows 1gib? She keeps being told she is out of app space.

My wife and I both have a Verizon Ellipsis 7 MV7A tablet. She has been getting messages to the effect 'insufficient app storage space". My tablet shows total ROM of 5 Gib while hers shows total ROM of 1 Gib. We both show Total space of 8 Gib. I have cleared cache and uninstalled apps but apps being updated are failing. Help! Thanks.

I'm talking about ROM. I have lots of available RAM. I got the "Available app space" to 143MB by removing updates to some apps. These were some of the pre-loaded apps that we are not using. The minute it wants to update other apps (pre-loaded) the available app space goes down until the “Insufficient space available” message appears.

  • I have recently upgraded to a smart phone. Samsung Galaxy 3s. Why does it loose the signal when I am inside a building? It is suppose to be 4G!?

Whys does my Samsung Galaxy 3s loose reception inside a building? I can get updates from running apps but not so good on phone calls or texts.

Building materials will degrade radio signals and in many cases kill them altogether. It's called attenuation This is true with cell, AM/FM Radio, Tv signals. Signals aren't magic. Especially if a building is surrounded by metal and concrete. Especially metal. A building with a metal roof is a signal killer.
Also calls and texts do not use the 4G signals. They use 1x. Version's 4G uses a lower frequency than 1x thus it is better able to handle going through buildings.

  • Why does Firefox have to make it so difficult to get answers--I am not going to be able to check the website to see what anyone might reply to my question on crashing?

I have no way of checking to see if anyone answers this. Why does Firefox have to make it so difficult?
What does this means: DLL C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\MOZCRT19.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
Suddenly all my tabs closed. Then Windows told me I had a gazillion infections. Then a tiny strip appeared saying it was Firefox and these little blocks started to fill up the little strip as if it were downloading something--there was no way to cancel this so I cut the power. Now when I try to use the Firefox icon, I get the message above.
Am I supposed to remove the old Firefox stuff and start from scratch? I am stuck using Internet Explorer.
I went to the Firefox website and tried to download it again, but McAffee jumped in and said there is something wrong with Firefox and I should register with them that I am downloading Firefox (I do not have McAffee). Then I got a security warning saying Firefox is not safe.
I am completely at a loss as to what to do next, since I don't understand any of this mumbojumbo.

Here's the story on one of your infections, namely JS:Redirector-EH[Trj]: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Trojan%3aJS%2fRedirector.H
The main problem with malware is that it uses the installation to proliferate by contacting hostile servers to download more of the same rogue code.
Firefox doesn't have the option to "Run" a file. You can only "Save File" or "Cancel". If you downloaded it with IE8, then yes, you can run it, but that's not what I wanted you to do.
What you should do now is to disable System Restore. You can open System Properties by hitting the Windows logo key and Pause/Break key together. Then click the "System Restore" tab. Then checkmark the box which says "''Turn off System Restore on all drives''". Reboot to clear its contents. System Restore unfortunately makes a backup of all executables which includes viruses so that when you reboot without deleting them first, System Restore reinstates them again.
After you complete that step, run Avast and Malwarebytes again to make sure the system is clean.
Then go to the Windows Update site (link on your start menu) and install the missing patches which enabled your machine to become infected in the first place.
Once the system is clean, repeat step one to download Firefox again, but please do not run the file. If you don't see the option to "Save File", cancel the download, but it should be there. You can use this direct download link to download FF4.0.1 [http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-4.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US Download Firefox 4.0.1]
Run the file after you download it to the desktop.

Apps downloaded on one should also appear on the other as long as the app in question runs on both iPads and iPhones.

  • Why does my iPhone say it doesnt have any more storage?

My phone had about 250-300MB of free space.  Then, I synched it with my computer.  It said I had to delete some stuff because it didnt have enough room to synch.  So I deleted about 1GB of apps, and as part of the synch, I updated 2 apps that were around 50MB combined.  Keep in mind these are basically replacing apps that were already on the phone.  Now, it still says I dont have enough room to put them on my phone, and iTunes is telling me I am 314MB over capacity.  If it all fit on there before, and I only put 50MB on there but I took 1GB off, how is this possible?  I have an iPhone 5 and the latest version of iTunes.

  • Please please help! I have messed up the DNS Settings on 10.8 server

Just started a new job and am in charge of managing the Mac Server. I have lots of Mac experience, but very little Mac OS X Server experience.
I used my MBP to access the server (which is a headless Mac Mini) and after I did so the settings were pretty messed up. In particular the Computer Name, Host Name, and DNS name were wrong or missing. I was able pretty easily to get the first two fixed, but not DNS.
I can reach the server via the IP, but NOT the domain name. (We were able to do this before I messed things up).
    When I run
    cat /etc/resolv.conf | grep nameserver
    I get 4.2.2.2
    which is the forwarding server
I have tried turning DHCP on and off, never works.
    When I run
    cat /etc/resolv.conf | grep nameserver
    I get
      nameserver[0] : 4.2.2.2
      nameserver[0] : 150.2.0.30
      nameserver[0] : 4.2.2.2
The 150.2.0.30 is what I have for the DNS entery in the Network Control Panel
When I run changeip -checkhostname under sudo I get
    macserver:~ bryanschmiedeler$ sudo
    Password:
    Primary address     = 192.168.x.x
    Current HostName    = server.example.com
The DNS hostname is not available, please repair DNS and re-run this tool.
    dirserv:success = "success"
Any help would be GREATLY Appreciated!
    Bryan

Here are instructions for setting up DNS on OS X Server; select the show-all-records option on Server.app in 10.7 and 10.8, and those instructions should get you to a working configuration.
Your DNS server on OS X Server should refer to itself, via 127.0.0.1 address; the "localhost" address; IP networking's version of "self" or "me".  This 127.0.0.1 reference is a special case, and only applicable to the DNS server's references to itself.  All other hosts on your network should refer to your OS X Server DNS server by its assigned private static IP address on your LAN; whatever 192.168.0.0/16 address you're using for your DNS server.  If you should have more than one DNS server on the LAN (commonly used for better reliability), each DNS server will refer to 127.0.0.1 and to the private static IP address of the other DNS server.
Do not refer to off-LAN DNS servers.  Do not refer to ISP DNS servers, or the old Verizon DNS servers (in use here) nor to the Google DNS servers.  To get local translations of private-block IP addresses such as your use of a subnet within 192.168.0.0/16, the server and the local clients must refer to the local DNS server.  (Not to off-LAN DNS servers.)  That means either manually-configured DNS server settings for static-addressed servers, and configuring the DHCP server to pass out only — only — the address of the local DNS server(s) to DHCP clients, and to not pass out any off-LAN server address(es).
Half the planet is probably using a subnet in the 192.168.0.0/16 private block, so obfuscating that range just means you might be running in one of the two the more problematic subnets, 192.168.0.0/24, or 192.168.1.0/24, but we can't tell.  Those will cause issues with potential future use of VPNs with this network.  Best to avoid those two subnet blocks.

  • Well to run a cfquery I must include a "password" attribute, etc except I have a local server ? yes / no

    I read ALL the textbook
    MACROMEDIA CF, 2002 course.com
Well to run a <cfquery> I must include a "password" attribute, etc
except I have a local server ? yes / no
May use/include a file dbinfo.cfm with all my passwords etc , and use
these passwords as variables in <cfquery>,...etc ? this is more secure ?
I must include vars in <cfscript> tag OR many <cfset> tags ?
    If I had
    <cfscript>
    password='gf56SDRPO999';
    </cfscript>
HOW TO INCLUDE THIS VAR IN  <cfquery password=#password# ...> this is correct ?

Your question is unclear to me, but if you just want to verify your syntax is legal, then YES.  You can easily set a value in a variable with <cfscript> and then later use that variable in a <cftag...> like you showed.
But I would argue there is little additional security in using passwords in code like this between setting the password and using it directly in the tag.  There may be reusability and maintainability advantages, but little advantage to security.

  • Exchange Mail on Local LAN

I have a user that has an Exchange email account setup on his iPad (Wi-Fi only) and it works fine when he is away from the company. When he is connected to the companies Wi-Fi and is on the same local subnet as the Exchange server he can't connect to the server. He receives this error "Cannot Get Mail The connection to the server failed" Does anybody have any ideas, thanks?
    Joe

My guess would be that your LAN's DNS server can't do internal routing. Many low-cost firewall/routers can't resolve a external domain name that point's back to itself. Assuming you have Outlook Web Access enabled, you can test this from a PC or Mac. In a browser, type in the domain name you used to configure the iPad.
For example, Outlook Web Access for my Exchange Server when I'm outside of the office is www.mycompany.com/owa. With my old router, if I typed that in while I was in the office, it would give me page not found. Typing in the local LAN IP address of the server rather than the domain name would work. (e.g.: 192.168.1.2/owa) Because www.mycompany.com pointed back to the LAN I was on, the routing failed. But of course, using the internal IP address wouldn't work when outside the office unless I also configured a VPN. (The VPN would connect the iPad to the "directly" to the internal LAN.)
I don't have any simple solution. What I did was replaced my router. There were other reasons I needed to replace the router, but one of the additional benefits was to get the internal routing.
So either get a different router or internal DNS server (or reconfigure the internal DNS server to route correctly, if possible. Or setup a VPN and configure the iPad to only use the internal IP address of the Exchange server.
