You can also get Lion, but personally, I think Mountain lion is what Lion was supposed to be.
In any case, there is absolutely no reason for you to get either one; Snow Leopard is a nice and reliable OS - of course, if you want any of the added features of the newest OS, then you will have to buy and install it.
So, the decision is up to you. Also note: any older PPC apps that still worked on Snow Leopard will no longer work on the new OS - you'd have to purchase upgrades if one is available.

Go to your Finder. You will see the drive listed with a little arrow with a bar below it next to the drive. Click on that to "eject" it.

I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion . The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive . I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory . Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely. The data I actually keep on there is 9GB Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

It's not a virus. It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily.
Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

That doesn't help the user with the serial code though.
There has to be some kind of code somewhere within the package. The disk itself does not contain one. You can look here for help with finding your serial number:

Either the file is corrupt or access to the storrage has failed
I would start by seeing if it will boot with Command + R depressed

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

Hi! I have a Canon laser printer LBP7750C and a Mac Book Air with OS X 1.8.4, but I can't get it to function. After installning the printer, via Ethernet network (Apple Time Capsule) and IP-number, it seems to connects ok but can't print. Anyone has a solution or tip? Thanks!

One possible cause for your symptom is the printer driver you are using. If you have installed the Postscript (PS) driver but your LPB7750 does not have the PS kit installed, then this can stop a document from printing. So I would suggest you download and install the UFR2 v10.10 driver.
If you are using the UFR2 driver then the other cause for this symptom is the IP protocol. This driver and the PS driver must be configured using the LPD protocol. If you have selected IPP or HP Jetdirect when creating the print queue, then this will stop you from printing. So remove the printer from Print & Scan and add it again, this time selecting LPD for the protocol.
Another cause can be you have the wrong IP address. To check that the address is correct, type the IP address into a web browser. This will result in a connection to the internal web page of the printer if the IP address is correct.

Running on Mac book air with 4G RAM

i have been running Logic Express on my iMac with 8 gig. I have the opportunity to pick up an i5 Mac book air with 4g and only a 128g ssd drive. is this machine powerful enough to run Logic Pro X? I still have Snow Leopard on the iMac. Want to play with Mavericks and make sure all my stuff still works. i was planning to pick up a 2TB external too. Maybe put the loops, etc on the external.

You can run LPX on your Macbook Air..
However, as to how well it will run... will be dependent on what plugins you use, how many plugins.. how many tracks and so on which all affect performance.. as different combinations make greater or lesser demands on your Mac's hardware...
Generally speaking overall performance will likely be less on your Macbook Air compared to your faster and more capable iMac... but may still be useable...

If I were you I'd install a small SSD as the boot drive from OWC:

Then put a second large conventional drive either in the optical bay (Data Doubler) or in an external.
You don't say which MBP you have: Size, CPU type.
Also when you upgrade you could see if you can salvage your data from your old HD. Can you hear it spin up? If so Data Rescue IV.

I have a mac book air 11". When I boot up connected to the huge Thunderbolt screen it detects the detects the fact and gives me great quality. now I am travelling away from the scree it boots up, nice picture, then switches to rubbish resolution.

I have a Mac Book air 11". Normally at home I connect this to a large Thuderbolt Screen. When booting up it some times gets confused and offers me a low resolution result, but some plugging and unplugging of the screen fixes this. I assume it sometimes "sees" the big screen and sets the resolition accordingly. Sometimes does not. But now... I am away from big screen and cannot get the Macbook air on its one to deliver anything other than really poor resolution. I ahve done displays and chosen all three - but no better. And I have said Choose the Best ONe... again not luck. Any ideas. I read in back posts this was a problem a few years ago.

I believe you have a failing GPU (aka Video Card). Run AHT and see what it tells you. Do not be afraid to run it up to three times in succession if at first it does not detect an error (sometimes errors that are caused by overheating will not show up until the computer is stressed enough - repeating AHT will do that).
As an aside - the MBA was not designed to take the place of a desktop. If you are powering your MBA by leaving it permanently attached to the thunderbolt port on the monitor you are shortening your battery life.

A PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data. Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier. I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4. If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place. I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

Can these photos also be transferred into my husbands iPhoto library under his login screen ? I want to transfer some not all of them and already deleted them from the camera card.

Use iPhoto Sharing.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
