I have a Mac with 10.5.8 installed, trying to transfer data from it to new machine, can't do it.until i upgrade to higher system?

I have an older Imac with 10.5.8 installed, (I have been told this is the highest version this machine will accept) I just purchased a new Imac and am trying to transfer data from one the old one to the new one, Migration assistant says I can't do it until I install a higher operating system??????????. How do i transfer data if I can't upgrade???

You will need an external USB drive at least the same size as the one in your old computer.
Make a clone of your old computer's hard drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
  5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the old computer's startup drive.
Connect the drive to your new computer. You can transfer what you want using Migration Assistant. Just select the option for migrating from an external drive.
