When i insert the disc, it says that snow leopard can not be installed on this macbook. what might i need to do? also i noticed that when i go to ABOUT THIS MAC, it will not show me the serial number. Instead it just reads serial number: system serial number.
Be sure the install DVD is specific for your MacBook or is a retail DVD for installation on any qualifying Mac hardware. A borrowed disk intended for another model will not work properly or at all.

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less. -
I upgraded to Lion and then all video clips on for instance Youtube freeze every tenth second to buffer more data. I have a MacBook Pro and never had any problems when using Snow Leopard. Has Lion problems with this?
Ulf, SwedenUse the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps. -

1. To be usable, a dmg file must first be mounted as a virtual disk by a running OS.

Do you see the problem? If the installer tried to restart from the image file, there would be no OS already running to mount the file, so the Mac could not possibly boot from it.

The OP could do the same, using either an external drive appropriately partitioned or possibly by downsizing the internal drive of the Mac on-the-fly with Disk Utility & creating a new partition in the space that makes available. The second method requires that enough free space be available at the end of the existing partition on the internal drive to make room for an adequately sized partition. Since Disk Utility won't let you downsize a partition past the location of the last file on it (because that would delete that file), this may or may not be possible, depending on how spread out & fragmented the files are now. -
MacBook Pro won't wake from sleep after installing Snow Leopard
If my MacBook Pro is running while closed with an external display and I unplug it from the display it goes to sleep - as indicated by the white light and the front pulsing. If I then open the MacBook the display remains blank and it is completely unresponsive to any keys or track pad input.
The only thing it responds to at that point is holding the power button down until it powers down and then restarting - loosing all work in progress at that point.

Definitely seems that it has a problem with that pic... In my case, selecting any images instead of the default setting (no screensaver) seems to have cured my non waking issue on my early Macbook Pro in Snow Leopard.
My original problem was that no amount of trackpad input woke it, but the space bar did. The space bar seemed to wake it up with the previous Screen Saver setting. Now trackpad wakes it up (even from total sleep as well as screen saver), too. Might be nice to know about if this is an intended 'feature' as a security trick. Otherwise I consider this a bug.
My vote is that it's a bug. -
MacBook Pro (Early 2008) battery health drop after installing Snow Leopard?
I installed Snow Leopard last Friday, when after the installation, I clicked my battery icon as I was looking through the new OS- and noticed that it said "Service Battery" which I hadn't seen before. So I looked in System Profiler and noticed that the maximum charge was around 3400mAh, quite a bit lower than the 5400mAh that it started with 14 months ago. So thinking that it might just be displaying incorrectly, I did a battery calibration (it was about that time anyway) as per the instructions on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 and when I plugged it back in after letting it sit in sleep for five hours, it shows 2848mAh as the maximum charge. There is no way that it would have lost ~600mAh worth of charge capacity through one calibration. The battery only has 198 cycles on it, and it states on http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html that the battery is designed to have 80% charge capacity at 300 cycles. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any way to improve battery health, short of buying a new one? Or does Apple cover batteries in cases like this?

I followed the procedure on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490, since I had the same problem (my battery capacity was significantly low compared to the cycles, I had ~2800 mAh (60%) for only 60 cycles) and when I rebooted the computer, it even dropped down to ~2095 mAh (40%) !! *So the good advice is to _NOT follow HT1490_ advice...*

Hello, I just recently replaced my internal hard drive in my MacBook [from a 250gb to a blank/empty 750gb]. I managed to get OS X Snow Leopard installed with the DVD. Setup seems to run fine at first, I get the screen in space with the welcome message different languages while music plays. Then I'm asked to select my country, then here is my problem- the next screen asks me to "Select Your Keyboard", I select & click "Continue" button, then my Mac is just showing the spinning beachball & it stayed that way all night =( I don't know how to fix this. Anyone experience this or have any solutions for me? I'd appreciate any help! Thank you! [I've been googling since yesterday with no luck on finding an answer].
It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.

On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.

Cannot install Snow Leopard on a new HD in MacBook
I have an older white MacBook that I want to install Snow Leopard onto again. I swapped the existing harddrive back to the original one I received from Apple when the MacBook was purchased. Before putting the hd into the MacBook I made sure to partition and format with Mac Journaled.
During startup I put the Snow Leopard disc and press C to boot from disc. Slowly but eventually, the Snow Leopard process begins. My MacBook cannot seem to detect the HD that is in the machine... When I run Disk Utility, it does not populate but the DVD drive with the Snow Leopard disc is found.
Any suggestions?What you are saying boils down to the MacBook is not recognizing the HD now installed in it. (Regardless of the formatting, Disk Utility should at least list the drive if it is communicating with the MB's hardware.)
Open the MB & make sure the HD is installed correctly, if necessary by removing it & reseating it, making sure connectors are fully mated, nothing is interfering with its fit into the space for it, etc. Close everything up & restart it, listening for any sounds that indicate the HD is spinning up. If not, it may have been damaged. You can also run the Apple Hardware Test from your original grey system disc set (see the label of the disc for instructions about how to do that if necessary) & see if it detects any hardware problems. If so, make a note of the error code & report that. -

I just bought a bigger hard drive for my macbook air. I already backed up with time machine. My plan was to install the new hard drive, install snow leopard, and then do a time machine restore. My problem is I own the snow leopard disk but the macbook air doesnt have a dvd drive. How do I re-install the OS without a DVD drive and does my plan make sense?

DON'T Install Snow Leopard on early MacBook Pro with Firmware password on!!
I'm going to summarize my postings from yesterday because I don't want anyone wasting their night like I did.
Many of us who upgraded from Tiger created a Firmware password to ensure that people won't be able to wipe and re-install the HD for sale if the computer gets stolen. I also note that, like me, many have been suffering the recent won't wake from sleep issues that make it feel like the HD is dead. Sometimes it starts from sleep, mostly it's a real hassle to get it to wake up and when it does it's generally in safe sleep mode. I managed to find a "halfway" good fix for that issue by changing the sleep mode from 0 to 3 in the terminal, found a useful script by Googling the problem. Fixes 90% of my issues on that score. But I wanted to install Snow Leopard to "hopefully" fix that issue for good.
HOWEVER, if you have a MacBook Pro 2006-2007 model and the original install disc is still Tiger, WARNING TURN OFF THE FIRMWARE PASSWORD if you created one before you attempt an install. Otherwise you'll be completely stuck in black screen **** and you cannot restart from the Snow Leopard disc once you have it in, neither can you eject it because you never get that far.
The computer, after installing Snow Leopard just gets stuck on the grey screen for a while and then goes black. The computer will not boot from the Snow Leopard disc, Techtool Protege or Leopard disc and the BIGGEST PROBLEM is; you can't Zap the PRAM with firmware active to try and continue installation as some other posters have suggested. Basically, you're screwed.
To get the Snow Leopard disc out I rebooted in Windows and ejected the disc, then put in first the Leopard disc... didn't work... then rebooted, ejected and put in the original installation disc with Tiger, that did work but no firmware password reset!!!
The only solution was for me to wipe the disc, reinstall Tiger from the original install disc, which was the only one that worked. Once I could restart the computer again in Tiger, I was finally able to reboot from the Leopard disc and disable the firmware password.
Then I restarted, zapped the PRAM and using the Leopard disc, restored my machine to its former self with my Time Machine back up. Ran Techtool Pro 5 to fix permissions and rebuild volumes etc. and now have it working again.
I think I'll leave Snow Leopard for a while since I don't know whether the zapping PRAM works during install and frankly, don't have the time to go through this entire debilitating process again. If anyone does manage to get things running on the earlier MacBook Pros please let me know how it went!
Anyway, just thought I'd give people a heads up on the Firmware password thing... it's really a bugger on the older models because it wasn't originally included on the original install disc leaving you with no options!!Sorry, just wnated to post a comment not question, wasn't sure how to mark it!

Installing Snow Leopard on New Lion formatted macbook pro
I just purchased a new 15" macbook pro and it came with lion. I need to revert back to snow leopard for a couple of my programs because they aren't currently supported. When I try to boot from the snow leopard disc to add a partition to my hard drive, my laptop beats and will not boot. I installed snow leopard on a different hard drive and swapped it out for the lion formatted one, same result when I try to start, it beeps. When I try to install snow leopard on an external drive I get this error "You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X. You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1" Any ideas of how I can get snow leopard installed? Thanks!
Sure! A picture is worth a thousand words:
Start up the Target Mac (the one you want to install Snow Leopard on) while holding T. Plug it into another "Helper" Mac using a FireWire cable. Insert the Snow Leopard installer DVD into the Helper Mac, then restart and hold C.
Now you should be able to go through the Snow Leopard installer as normal, but make sure to choose the Target Mac volume as the install destination.
Immediately after installing, download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater on the Helper Mac and install it to the Target Mac while it's still connected via Firewire. Once that's done, restart the Target Mac on its own, and it should be ready to go! -

In other words, I want a hard disk with the faster snow leopard, that was the native OSX of my MBP mid 2010. But using the last procedure you suggested me, the dvd doesn't appear. I repeat, there's something changed in the firmware that blocks snow leopard.

When I took it to the Genius Bar and they ran a diagnostic, nothing showed up. It appeared fine and did not shut down during the time I was in the Apple Store. Of course, once I made the two-hour drive home, my computer shut down within two minutes of using it. Any ideas? Do I need a new computer? This one is about 5 years old.
Sounds like a buggerd battery chip. If the MacBook turns off at a certain percent all the time, then your battery's status chip is damaged and is (quite literally) lying to Mac OS X.
If it is actually hitting 0%, then temperature could be an issue or a there may be an issue with the battery itself.
My advice: you may need to get a new MacBook as a new battery for 2006-model MacBook may be hard to come by (and defintiely no warranty support from Apple). -
I have a macbook pro 5,3 white I am trying to hook up to a samsung hdtv. I have used a mini dv to hdmi adapter but I get no sound on my tv. What can I do to get sound?
The Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor will only pass video in most cases. You will need to run a separate audio cable along with it. Likely a 3.5mm (male-to-male) cable. Or a 3.5mm (male) to red/white RCA (male) cable. Just depends on what audio input ports your TV has dedicated to the HDMI input.
