  • Cannot install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010)

Hi, I'm trying to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010 model) via Boot Camp assistant. I've hacked the Info.plist of the Boot Camp Assistant to allow it to create a bootable USB installer drive. After successfully creating the USB, the laptop proceeds to reboot itself but it never loads up the Windows installer. However, if I restart it while holding Option, and selecting EFI boot, the installer loads up. However, once it loads, I cannot install Windows 8 Consumer Preview to the Boot Camp partition because of this error: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. WIndows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS. Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
Can anyone guide me through steps that would hopefully resolve this problem? Thank you in advance

  • Macbook Air 11  Late 2010 - Slow start up times

I used to have a start up time of around 10-15 seconds with my mb air (11 inch 4gb ram core 2 duo 1.6 128gb SS). Now, it takes 40-50 seconds to fully load it.
    I've done the ff
    1) verified and fixed permisions
    2) used clean my mac
    3) used onyx
    4) ensured that my hard drive is the start up drive ( start up disk)

Safe boot always takes longer because it checks the drive, clears caches, etc. Perhaps using Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner to clear out all your user, system, and font caches will help. As will doing this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • My Macbook Air 11 (late 2010) not charging "battery replace now) message 28 months old only 6 charge cycles. what could cause this?

I've unplugged plugged in. Checked the charger. Nothing runing. I've Shut down rebooted ran diagnostics and just about everything resolution I could find on-line. Its almost always plugged in and has not been used on battery power in a long time. Its not run down to zero power before. Just suddenly shut off the other day and won't charge now. Says replace battery now, but I just want to see if it could be something else. Hard to believe the battery went bad like that.
    Thanks

always plugged in and usually in sleep mode.
So it was always plugged in, never discharged, and was never really OFF, just in sleep mode.
Sounds like you got some half-true 'advice' from some people.
It DOES shut down when fully charged and you cant "overcharge" your macbook....., and the "others" were correct that your battery should be cycled every couple weeks at least.
what they didnt tell you is "plugged in and OFF is one thing.......plugged in ALL THE TIME...AND in sleep mode (for years)......NO!"
Heres some info for the "next battery" :
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles DOWN on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery.
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your macbook and therefore you cannot 'overcharge' it when plugged in and already fully charged
If you leave your macbook plugged in all the time, take it off charge and drain the battery down to 15 or 20% every couple of weeks or so.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
LiPo batteries do NOT like to be dropped down to 15% or so often,....key word being "often"
A lot of battery experts call the use of LiPo cells the "80% Rule" ....meaning use 80% of the charge or so,.. then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook die from power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
**Also new evidence suggests that sudden loss of power can adversely affect data on a SSD (solid state drive).....again, dont let it ever shut down from total power loss
The only quantified abuse seen to LiPo cells is instances when  often the cells are repeatedly drained very low.
Contrary to what some might say, LIPo batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity.
Same way you dont take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
and best "tip" is if its near a socket, .....plug it in as long as you can (especially at home) since cycle count on the battery are the "miles that wear out the tires (battery)"

  • Macbook air 13in late 2010

I made the mistake of bringing my mac into the bathroom with me while I took a hot shower. That was some 3 months ago. Since then I have dried and opened up the mac but it hasn't been fixed.
The mac is almost the same, it's just that the keyboard doesn't work like it should. It types the mac symbols and then it slows down (when I open up stuff) after I type.
Is there a solution or is there a problem with the logic board that I can't fix?

the steam must have damaged something.  You can bring it to an Apple store or AASP for diagnosis, but if it is the logic board, it will cost almost the same as a new mac to replace.

  • MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010) keyboard input problem

The keyboard on my MBA has started to act weird lately - pressing certain keys will produce different results than that intended.
    For example:
    Pressing the "UP" cursor/ arrow key will MUTE the system's sound;
    Pressing the "RIGHT" cursor/ arrow key will, in addition to its usual effect of skipping a space (like the effect of pressing a spacebar), the track playing on iTunes will be also skipped to the next track;
Pressing the "`" key (the one immediate above the "Tab" and below the "Esc" keys) will TURN UP the brightness of the screen!
I have formatted my harddrive and reinstalled OS X 10.8.3 from fresh but that didn't solve the problem.
What could be the cause and any known solution?
    Thanks.
    AC

Sounds like it cound be. While they should not be involved, try resetting the system's PRAM and SMC, to see if those help anyting:
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Reset SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If this does not help, then given that it's persisting even after a fresh install suggests you should take it in for servicing, as it could very well be a firmware fault or other hardware-based issue.

  • Why my macbook ( air 11" late 2010 ) shutdown unexpectedly ?

Hi , my mac shuts down very often unexpectedly , may someone help me and tell me how to resolve this problem ?

Are you doing anything specific when it happens?    You likely have a hardware fault.
    reset SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
If it happens again, contact Apple for in shop full diagnosis and likely logic board replacement.

  • Macbook air 11" late 2010 won't charge battery, green light on

Had charging issues so bought correct wattage apple magsafe adapter. With new magsafe, laptop works fine, green light on, but not charging battery. It has 335 cycles and shows 5.944 volts. So, I bought a new battery off ebay (A1375). Installed new battery, and now it will only work on battery power and magsafe shows not connected, no green light as if its fried. I have 3 magsafes so its not this.
I did all the nvram, SMC, and battery out/power button SMC bypass resets to no avail. After a time, the battery died to 0%, and now the magsafe turned green again and works fine on AC power again! This is really strange. It acts as tho it can only run on DC or AC power but not both and never charges. I even put in the old battery, updated to the ~31 Jan 13 firmware and tried all the resets again. Nothing. So now it works just fine on AC power, green light on, 0% on the new battery not charging.
Lastly, I took it into apple and they wouldn't fix it for cheaper than 700 which more than totals the value of the laptop.
Any pro's out there have an idea? I don't want to toss a perfectly good laptop that has 100% pixels and runs perfectly in every other way.

RRFS thank you for the reply. Am I throwing good money at bad by trying to fix it? I have found some logic boards on ebay for mid 200's i'm considering. Or should I cut my losses and part it out? I fortunately got my data off it on one of the last successful startups.

  • I have a macbook air bought in 2010 wit liquid damage that might has affected the SSD card. I need to get my data but apple won't help. Authorized dealers never seem to have the same model to try whether the SSD card works. How can I get my data quickly?

    Hi
I have a macbook air bought in 2010. It has liquid damage that might or might not affected the SSD card. I need the data on my SSD card for work and I need it urgently. Apparently Apple won't get the data out, even if I have apple care... Licensed apple dealers need to have the same macbook air model so they can insert the SSD card and check whether the data is there, and they never seem to have one...
I'm really disappointed with apple. It's been two weeks and I haven't been able to find out whether the SSD card is holding my data. It can't take that long to do it in store... How can they sell a product and then wash their hands on the matter?
Anyway, enough with the apple rant. I need to get this data urgently so I need to find out how I can get it out of the card. The SSD card and data might be fine so I don't want to take it to a data recovery centre and get charged loads.
    Thanks for your help.

See this link for a 4870 card, best instructs for flashing for a noob like me. (last lowest price was $150 for a 1GB vRAM 4870 from TigerDirect).

However, not every 4870 card will work with the ROM currently floating around out there. BEWARE!

  • ICal, Macbook Air, and Exchange 2010

I have a user whos iCal is not syncing with Exchange 2010. When creating a new event, it gives the message "iCal can't save the event "xxxx" to the Exchange server. The account "xxxx" currently can't be modified. To discard your changes and continue using the version of your calendars that's on the server, click Revert to Server. To save your changes on your computer until the problem is resolved, click Go Offline."
The user is on a 2011 13" Macbook Air, 1.86 GHz Core 2 Duo. Snow Leopard 10.6.7, iCal 4.0.4. Mail and Address Book sync fine. The calendar works fine from the users iPhone, Outlook Web Access, and Outlook 2011 on the computer.
I have tried deleting the account, deleting all caches, and recreating it, but it still doesn't work. I created the account on my Macbook and it works fine, no problems syncing over wired or wireless connections. Macbook is also on 10.6.7, iCal 4.0.4. So I was thinking it was an account issue. I created a new account on the Macbook Air, set up the exchange account in iCal, and I get the same problem as on the original account, no syncing.. I have everything set up exactly the same as on my Macbook, but the Macbook Air refuses to sync. This error only appears when an event created on the Macbook Air is in the calendar. It pulls events from the server fine, but once an event is created it refuses to cooperate.
Do Macbook Airs just not play nice with Exchange?

This is not an issue with the Macbook Air.  I have had this same problem since upgrading to Lion.  One solution suggested (from MacRumors.com forum reply)  was to
    1) Open iCal and go into the iCal Menu/Preferences. Go to Advanced tab and enable Time Zone Support. Close iCal
    2) Open System Preferences and click on Date & Time. Click on Time Zone tab and enable the checkbox for auto detect time zone.
I did this several times without success before I finally got rid of the errors.  I have been error free for 3 weeks, but today the error is back (with no apparent changes made by me).  I'm still struggling to get rid of it now.

  • Need help with my Macbook air 13inch battery

hey i just got my Macbook air 13inch baseline and i was watching a youtube video with full charge and it say i only have 3.30hours-4hours of battery left is that normal? and if i play some music on itunes with only 1 webpage open(with no video) it says i only have about 4hours left. The apple webpage claims that the macbook air 13inch can last upto 7hours of normal web use but when i was just browing the web with no video no song it still give me about 5hours-6hours max.

    MeAljw wrote:
but is it normal that i get that much less battery by watching video or listening to music?
There is a fixed amount of energy in a charged battery.
The faster you take it out the faster the battery will be drained.
Watching videos puts a heavy load on the battery.
