I have a macbook pro 15" Retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram yet when i try to download a HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD?

i have a macbook pro 15" retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram when i try to download an HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD? i went to the support on the apple website and looked at the specs that a computer has to meet in order to play HD movies and mine is well above them. Why can't i play the movies?

That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."

To save space on the computer, Apple has decided to solder the memory onto the logic board on the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the MacBook Air, and that's why you can't add more memory after buying the Mac. This only applies to these computers, not for the other ones

  • I just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and since then put it on 6-7 hours of charging but still my macbook pro is not 100% charged. but why? (green light is displayed on the adapter pin)

i just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and when i switched it on the battery was 72 % charged and now the battery is charged to 62%, i used the charger that came with it and kept it for 6-7 hours on charging but it is not charged to 100% but why? also the green light is always on when i plug the charger with my mac book pro. Please tell me the meaning of Green light on power cord lid (mac book pro not charging or charging?) and also the other light if there like amber or any other colour.

    Hello Shailendras33,
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro!  Thank you for providing all the information about what is going on with the charging issue.
Firstly, I found some information on page 11 of the MacBook Pro User Guide about what each color of the LED means on the Power Adapter:
When you first connect your power adapter to your MacBook Pro, an indicator light on the
MagSafe connector starts to glow.  An amber light indicates the battery is charging.  A green light indicates that the battery is fully charged.
You can find the MacBook Pro User Guide here (this is not for the latest MacBook Pro, but the information about the MagSafe adapter is true for the newest model):
    MacBook Pro User Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/macbook_pro_15inch_late_2011.pdf
It sounds like you are not getting the amber light indicating your computer is charging, and you are noticing that the battery level is depleting.  I recommend resetting your System Management Controller when something like this is occurring:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • MacBook Pro 15" Retina display with distorted graphics.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" Retina display purchased in Nov. 2014.  When surfing the net areas of the screen will sometimes begin to display distorted or blinking graphics.  The distoreded area are usually about 2" high by 3" long of either blinking text or filled many small rectangles of distorted graphics.  I ran diagnostics and no problems found.  Here is a link to a video of the problem.

    Howdy dalefromdeatsville,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue where you're seeing graphical distortion on your Mac's display, please follow the instructions below.
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

Hi my and my husbands iphones are no longer syncing to itunes but have in the past. When i try to download the latest version of itunes it won't let me do it until I load and earliers version....help

    No problem.
Okay ... Try updating your iTunes using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer file downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does that install go through okay? If so, can you connect the phones now?

  • My mac is telling me when I attempt to download an HD movie from iTunes that, "This cannot be purchased in HD on this computer." this does not makesense because I have the retina display Macbook pro 15"

My mac is fully loaded, it is the brand new, a little over a year old Macbook pro. I cannot download this movie in HD because it says I cannot watch HD movies on my mac, I have done this countless times before and I don't know why i am just having this problem now. Is there a setting that I have wrong or is there a problem that needs to be corrected with my mac? I have all software and iOS up to date.

Unfortunately, Canon's most current 1080p digital cameras are plagued by the same bug: they have 5.0 as their H.264 level. This is why you can't synchronize  them to the iPad version of Videos, because Apple (pretty much unnecessarily) limited the synchronizable H.264 level to 4.1.
You can fix this in two ways:
    - use a third-party video player with hardware playback and iTunes File Sharing sychronization (meaning you can just drop the file in them in the App list); for example, GoodPlayer or It's Playing.
    - change the H.264 level. You can do this with both recompressing (in most cases, it's not recommended) with HandBrake or (this is what you should try first) just changing the given byte with a desktop tool. You want to read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/making-stock-videos-application-play-every-mp4 -files-possible on the latter subject.
There's a related thread at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18910324?ac_cid=sa123456#18910324 , where I've posted a lot on these subjects. You'll want to read my first two large posts there, not the last one. (The last one is strictly discussing Canon camcorders, not digicams.)

  • MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display 15-inch 2012 making strange cricket-like noise (only when plugged in)

Hi guys, I have a year old retina MBP. Recently, it just started making this high-pitched whirring cricket-like sounds. Although pretty quiet, the sound is pretty annoying. This sound has a few strange characteristics that make it hard for me to pin it down to any component:
    - the sound only occurs when laptop is PLUGGED IN, when my laptop is not plugged (on battery), there is no sound
    - reducing the screen brightness, reduces the sound but does not make it go away (even with no backlight, the sound is still there)
    - the sound occurs mostly when performing going into MISSION CONTROL or swiping between desktops. It also sometimes happens randomly, but that is less common. It follows the inputs of trackpad and keyboard, though mostly mission control swipes and desktop changes. It doesn't coincide with intensive CPU, GPU, RAM or SSD tasks (ie running a CPU/GPU heavy app, or compressing a file does not increase the quantity of sound)
    - I am not very sure where the sound originates from, might be from the top left of the keyboard (q key), but it is also louder near the speakers.
    ALSO:
    - It is not from the fans, as they occur when fans are running slow or fast and this sound is unaffected by any changes in fan speed
    - reducing backlight has no effect
    - turning automatic graphic off or on has no effect
    - resetting NVRAM, etc. has no effect
    Most likely theory:
    - some kind of faulty capacitor maybe?
         - but then which part of the laptop to replace....
    - I don't have Applecare, but I do have a third-party warranty; they've agreed to replace the faulty part...
    - I've read the forums and have seen people with similar problems (though never this exactly; replacing fans and logic board does not seem to help)

    guiparent,
whether it’s worth the price or not is an entirely subjective opinion. My own choice was to buy a used non-Retina 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and replace its hard drive with a SSD; but since I don’t use graphic-intensive apps such as the Adobe Creative Suite, my own choice would most likely not be best for you. Given your graphic design background, if you find the non-Retina displays sufficient for your needs, I’d recommend that you consider a used 15-inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. That model has memory sockets, so you can replace/upgrade the RAM if needed; its internal disk can be replaced by/upgraded with any 2.5-inch 9.5-mm-high SATA hard disk or SSD; and it has a built-in SuperDrive.

No, the Apple warranty for Macs does not cover accidental damage.

  • HT4110 What is the best battery setting for the MacBook Pro 13 Retina display?

I want to know the best setting for the battery for the MacBook Pro 13 Retina display.

    To add just a little
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
And best "tip" is if its near a socket,...plug it in as long as you can (especially at home) since cycle count on the battery are the "miles that wear out the tires (battery)", however again, not plugged in all or most of the time.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW  & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
*However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

  • So I have a MacBook Pro 2013. That won't turn on and won't charge.

So I have a MacBook Pro 2013. That won't turn on and won't charge. When the charger is plugged in the light remains green as if it is fully charge. Before it died the laptop still recognized the charger but wouldn't charge. And now won't turn on.

If you've a 2013 model, depending on when you purchased the machine, I would suppose that you're still under warranty or at least purchased AppleCare? Regardless, I would take the kit to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose the computer (and, if you're still under warranty, fix the computer) and, if necessary, give you an estimate for repair.
There are all sorts of things that could be wrong - a faulty adapter, bad cabling, even the entire electrical circuitry may have gone bad.
You won't know unless you had an Apple tech look it over.
    Good luck,

  • What are the Windows Experience Index numbers for Windows 7 running on a MacBook Pro 13 Retina Display?

I am curious to know what speed those running Windows 7 on a MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display are obtaining.  I am interested in purchasing a MacBook Pro 13" Retina (i7) and will be running Windows 7 frequently since some of my business software only runs under Windows.  I have heard that the best PC is a Mac.  Just wanted to confirm the Windows Experience Index values are for those MacBook Pro users are seeing when running Windows 7.  The Windows 7 Experience Index numbers include one for Processor speed, Memory (RAM) speed, Graphics speed, Gaming graphics speed, and Primary Disk speed.

Hi - I connected my superdrive but it does not seem to be working - now all I get is a black screen with the prompt - no bootable device; insert boot disk and press any key.
Any thoughts on this? I put an ISO image on my desktop and also created an image on a USB drive - however it has encryption software on it which did not get overwritten so Im not sure if this is why that won't boot.
Does anyone know if the Superdrive can't be used?
