I have a MacBook Pro- I forgot the password!

Basically whenever I want to install or update something from now on it keeps asking me for my password!
I thought it was going to be the same one I use on itunes but its not! What should I do - I don't want to do anything and end up losing all my documents.
Please help!

Resetting or changing a password:
For Snow Leopard or earlier:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274

If it's running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the Option key held down, click on it, and use the Reset Password utility.
If it's running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down, open the Terminal, and use the resetpassword command:

I have a macbook pro mc700, And the scrolling lags or doesn't respond at times. What can I do to fix it?

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the  Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Reimaged MacBook Pro and forgot the login password set at Genius bar

I need help getting to the terminal to reset my password.
I recently had my MacBook Pro reimaged by staff at Genius Bar, (with OS X Yosemite).
We set a login password, however I forgot that password (late in the day, sun in my eyes, dog ate my homework...etc).
I know there's a way to get to the terminal from start up, but I can't remember the steps.
I'm fairly certain from the terminal, I can type passwordreset to get to the proper interface needed to reset my password and start restoring my old files.
    thanks

I am also on my forth hard drive on the same model.
When I unpacked the computer, the hard drive did not include OS X either. Actually, it was completely blank. Did not even have a partition table! I have also had random problems with the machine not charging.
I have replaced the drive myself with an SSD after figuring the Apple Certified technicians were incompetent. Now even the SSD is starting to fail
I have bought an HP laptop and setup Ubuntu on it. Hope it turns out better than my previous four various Mac models. All have had various repeating hardware issues that Apple Certified technicians have been unable or unwilling to correct.

  • I have a Macbook Pro (2009) and the tool bar in Safari keeps disappearing. There's a small diagonal arrow on the upper right that I can click and the bar will appear temporarily, but then it disappears from view. "Hide Toolbar" is greyed out in VIEW

My 2009 Macbook Pro's Safari doesn't show the tool bar anymore.  I can click on a diagonal arrow in the upper right corner that appears when I put my cursor there and the tool bar will show, but then it disappears again.  Also, when I get an email and click on an internet link the Safari doesn't open full page like it used to - it opens as a small little box and I have to click the diagonal arrow in upper right corner for it to open full screen.  Any ideas how to correct this - it is so annoying.  Thanks for any help!

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

  • I can't login my MacBook Pro, I know the password, but it does not enter. PS: I can't either boot my Mac.

I was with Lion on my MacBook Pro, I came back to Snow Leopard, The firs time I tried to login i fail, but I know my password.
To solve the problem I boot it with the Snow Leopard DVD, but I failed again (I tried many times, pressing C and restarting).

    Fannar9,
which model MacBook Pro do you have, which version of OS X is installed on it, and have you enabled FileVault on your internal disk?

  • I have a macbook pro from ~2011. the arrangement tab normally shown in display system preferences no longer appears. how can i restore it to the menu?

looking to connect macbook to television. used to connect easily until i presented PPT for class. now "arrangement" tab no longer displayed, and macbook display does not show on TV

Use Finder and search for 'Microsoft Word'.  If it shows up, launch it from Finder and when it appears in Dock, right click the icon and select Options > Keep in dock.
If finder does not find Word it has somehow been deleted.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

I Have a MacBook Pro i7 2011 it stays on for about 4 hours then the screen go's all fuzzy and I have to turn it off by the power button has any body else had this problem thanks mike

My guess would also be a failling connection between your logicboard and your GPU. See 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
For most users it starts with some random crashes and freezes like you describe it. And then it just gets worse and worse. There are still no "good" solutions, sadly. This is a hardware problem from the production.

  • I have my macbook pro for a while now and all of sudden it just started shutting down randomly when my battery had enough life in it and only works and comes back on when I put it on the charger. Do I need to replace my battery?

    I have a MacBook Pro
Keeps completely shutting down all the time when its fully charged and at random times when it is at 65% for example
Do I need to get a battery replacement? Or do I have a virus?
    PLEASE HELP

Sudden power-down is most often caused by overheating. The fans in a Mac are controlled by software that measures temperatures at several points inside the computer, and increases the fan speeds when temperatures are rising. You should get it checked to be sure the fans  are working as expected. Your appointment for an evaluation at the genius Bar at an Apple Store is free, in warranty or out.
Battery shortage will generally cause your MacBook to warn you, then go to sleep.
Your symptoms do not correspond with any know Viruses.

I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.
