I have a Macbook Pro less than a year old running slow

I have a macbook pro that is less than a year old and it's running pretty slow.  This is the first Mac I've ever had and always heard they are great and never get viruses.  The software versions in OS X 10.8.1.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

A mini DisplayPort display or adapter won't work plugged directly into the Thunderbolt port on the back of a Thunderbolt display, but will work if a Thunderbolt disk drive (with two Thunderbolt ports) is connected between the Thunderbolt display and Mini DisplayPort device.

  • How do I fix a black screen on a MacBook Pro (less than a year old)?

My daughter was working on her MacBook Pro and the screen went blank.  She has rebooted and tried holding Shift key when rebooting and also Command V.  Neither did anything.  The keyboard is responsive and the computer is sounding/acting like normal except she can't see anything.  She does not have a way to hook up to TV to see if it is the screen.
Any suggestions?  She is as college without a car and not sure when she can get to Apple store and laptop is required for school.

If the screen is black throughout the boot process, meaning no gray screen, no Apple logo, etc., it's likely a hardware problem. If she can't get to an Apple store, she can call and Apple will send a box for her to send it in to them. Of course, that lengthens the time it's out of her hands.

  • Why does my macbook pro, less than a year old, not show airplay

My new apple tv does not work with my new macbook pro.  No silly box/triangle icon shows up on the operating system.  I cannot use airplay.  No help anywhere.  No documentation.  No diagnostics.  Just fail. Fail. FAIL.  Now my Apple TV will not upgrade...it tries and FAILS.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

    Jo

I had a MacBook which cracked several times over the three years I had it.  Each time it was repaired under warranty without quibble.
I had to use Windows XP quite a lot, and though I can't be certain I think that the excessive heat generated by XP was partly to blame for the repeated cracking.  There's no doubt that OS X is "cool" in every sense of the word!

  • New Macbook Pro - less than a week old

    Hi all,
I just recently got a Macbook Pro, had it for 3 weeks before it got stolen and got it replaced through insurance.
Since getting this new one, I have noticed its considerably slow to start compared my previous one. Anyone can suggest why? before it would make the apple noise instantly and go straight into log in page in matter of few seconds but now it takes a while.... like 10 to 20 seconds... any suggestions??

I have phoned up Apple to ask about this... and they said on average MBP should take up about 15 to 20 seconds... and they reckon it seems just about right.. nevertheless they helped me to perform few things... to reset the hardware etc and did step by step apple hardware test... and came up with nothing wrong... so they ensured that its normal..and perhaps my previous one was lucky one with real fast boot up time...
but suggested that i reinstall os x if i was still worried... so have done all that and updated all the softwares etc.. seems just about the same if not marginally faster... so maybe i was just paranoid... i dont know.. but ican assure you guys that the one i had previously was definitely faster eh... hmmm
will try the boot up option later on...and keep you posted. other than that thanks heaps...
oh and i have no other problems... its running smooth as once its up and runing...

  • My MacBook is less than five years old. can't synch anything or update anything. what can I do about this?

I have a MacBook, regular white one from 2008. I can't seem to update or synch any product onto it. does this mean I need to get a new MacBook?

Could you be more specific about what you are trying to do? If, for example, you are trying to sync your MacBook with an iPhone 5, or an iPad mini, which your tags indicate you may have, requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later.
Mac OS X 10.6 can be purchased from the Apple store online. Cost (in the USA) is $19.99. Upgrading to 10.6.8 from there is free.
Let us know, we will keep working with you.
    Best of luck.

You did not steal my thunder. You asked for advice, I provided advice. I assumed that since you nor the "support team" could find your files that you did not have any backup. You should have told us you do regular backups. We have no way to know otherwise unless you tell us.

Is it true that in order to use the continuity in Yosemite you must have a Macbook Pro newer than 2013?

    from a third-party site:
In addition to Yosemite, iOS 8.1 and a carrier tethering plan, Instant Hotspot will require an iPhone 5 or newer; a mid-2012 or newer MacBook Air or MacBook Pro; an iMac or Mac mini made since late 2012; or a late 2013 Mac Pro. Instant Hotspot can also be shared from an iPhone with a fourth-generation iPad or newer, any iPad mini model, or a fifth-generation iPod touch.

OK, well I would go with what Apple says in writing but if you want to take a trip to visit the Genius Bar that won't hurt.
Good luck, I'm 99% certain  you will find I was correct but please let us know.

    Hi,
    Have you tried
    1.leaving the screen flipped open,
    2.connecting power
    3. connecting external monitor; waiting for it to 'wake up';
then 4. closing lid of MBP to activate clamshell mode?

  • My iMac is less than one year old.  Without warning, the screen suddenly goes black.  It used to happen occasionally, but is now happening all the time without warning.  What is Apple doing to correct the problem?

My iMac is less than one year old. Without warning, the screen suddenly goes black.  It used to happen ocasionally, but now it happens all the time.  Numerous people have posted about this issue. Why hasn't Apple solved the issue.  For what I paid my computer, I expected more from the product than I have gotten.  I was a PC person for years and most of my associates told me that I needed to get a mac...I am starting to regret having taken their advice.

    Sorry you're having this problem.
A few years ago we had a similar issue on one of our machines, it was an early MacBook. Ended up being a cracked circuit connection on the motherboard. Changes in temperature caused the crack to expand and contract resulting in a shut-down followed by an automatic reboot. Sometimes over-and-over. I understood from AppleCare at the time that those symptoms could have also been any number of things including a intermittent issue with a powersupply.
If you take it back to the Apple Store at some point, I would ask them to have it run some CPU intensive tasks that closely resemble what you are doing when the screen goes black. It took us several try's to find the problem. Calling AppleCare each time to discuss it and troubleshoot before making the trips to the Apple Store really moved things along. In fact, it wasn't until the Apple Store had cracked the case from the inside that things kicked into a higher gear and AppleCare phone support sent out a pre-paid FedX package to send it to a refurbishing facility. Never a problem since and I know the people who have the machine today.
PS Can identify with the trip to the Apple Store, our closest one is in Knoxville, 2hrs from us.

  • My Macbook Pro is about 5 years old.  Is it worth upgrading to the new OS?

I have a Macbook Pro that is sort of old.  I haven't used it in more than a year because I had a laptop through work.  I recently lost my job and dusted off my macbook to use.  I will need to update to Snow Leopard in order to update to the current system.  Is it worth doing it on this laptop

If you upgrade beyond 10.6, you will not be able to use some, if not all, of your apps.
Therefore before you go beyond Snow Leopard look carefully at the apps you have that you will use. Upgrading apps is not inexpensive. This site offers a comprehensive compatibility table:

  • Less than a year old MBP 13 Battery is now less than 89%

My MBP is less than a year old. I check the battery and surprisingly, it has 534 cycles and only 89% Health left. I use iStat Pro. The battery is quite disappointing at only less than a year of use. Can I get it replaced under Applecare?

If you've cycled your battery 534 times in less than a year, you're flogging it within an inch of its life. Completely discharging and recharging your battery 1-1/2 times a day is as hard on it as anything you could possibly do to it, short of storing it in a closed parked car in the summer sun.
And still, after 53.4% of your rated 1000 cycles are gone, you've only lost 55% of the 1/5 of the battery's original Full charge Capacity that Apple expects you will lose in 1000 cycles. That is to say, despite your extremely hard usage of your battery, it's almost exactly on pace to meet Apple's stated expectation that it will still have 80% of its original Full Charge Capacity after 1000 cycles. Your disappointment is completely unwarranted, and you certainly have no reason to ask for or expect a replacement battery.
If you want it to last as long as possible, stop deep-discharging it every time you use it, and plug in your AC adapter whenever you can.
