I have a MacBook running OS 10.9 with 4GB of memory free.  Can I install Yosemite?

Other things being equal, 4GB is enough to check your email and run Yosemite. If your Mac runs well with Mavericks it should run well with Yosemite.
You probably won't be happy with the performance of your Mac with Yosemite if you are planning on doing other things that are more demanding on your hardware, like Photoshop or editing video, or using virtualization software. Unless you like seeing the spinning beachball.
Other factors are important too, like your HD (SSD vs. conventional drive), how full your HD is, how fast your processor is, and if you have some types of "crapware" on your Mac, for example, CleanMyMac or MacKeeper, or other similar dubious "utilities".  Or antivirus software. But that is a whole discussion in itself.
You can easily test drive Yosemite in one of two ways:
1. Make a backup of your current installation, like with Time Machine. Then if you don't like Yosemite you can restore from your backup.
2. Make a test partition on your hard drive and install Yosemite there.

  • HT201364 I have OS X version 10.6.8 with 1 GB memory.  Can I purchase and download additional memory online?

I have OS X v 10.6.8 with 1 GB memory.  Can I purchase & download more memory and upgrade to Mavericks?  I just want my photos on iCloud.  Please help.  If it's not worth the purchase b/c the computer is too old, should I just spend ~$70 for a flash drive with 128GB & copy my iPhoto library to that?  If I do so, will I be able to access the photos when I purchase a new Mac desktop or Macbook?  Appreciate any & all feedback.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.

If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 2.26 Ghz 2GB memory . Can I run OSX 10.7 . I am on 10.6.8 and am told software is up to date?

I would like to be able to run OSX 7 on my wife's MacBook Pro , as I have a new printer which required  OSX7 or above.
Her Macbook Pro is Model MacBook Pro 5,5 2,26GHz speed and 2GB memory.
When I look for software updates I get the message that software is up to date.
Is it possible to run OSX7 on this Macbook Pro , and if so , how do I get it.
    Many thanks , Sam

Open the Mac App Store and download Yosemite, or if you don't want to upgrade all the way immediately, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7; codes for Mountain Lion are also available.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • I have a macbook running 10.6.8 is there a way to transfer docs from that computer to iCloud

I have a macbook running 10.6.8 is there a way to transfer docs from that computer to iCloud with out using a third party app like dropbox?

Yes - if you have the iWorks apps or apps that support iCloud and if you have iCloud setup on the iPad correctly. You do by using Safari on the Mac.
If you have Pages on both devices - you can log into iCloud.com on the Mac. Sign in, and click on the iWorks icon in the browser window in Safari. Then click on Pages at the top in the next window. Then drag your Pages document from the Mac desktop onto the browser window and the document will be available in Pages on the iPad when you launch it.

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

  • I have a MacBook running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 which I purchased in 2006/2007.  Is it time for me to purchase a new computer to stay "up-to-date"?

I have a MacBook running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 which I purchased in 2006/2007.
Should I purchase a new computer?
I'm planning on purchasing Adobe Creative Suite 4 or 5 and overall I want to make sure my computer (Internet, etc.) is up-to-date.

Snow Leopard requires 1gb of RAM too. It sounds like you already have the minimum.
What model of Mac Book do you have? Go to the "Apple" in the upper left hand corner and select "About This Mac". Then click "More Info" and check "Model Identifier" in "System Profiler" is it a 1,1, or 2,1?
You can upgrade the RAM to 2gb in either one for about $40 http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
If you like the MacBook I would stick with it. I'm running an older MacBook with CS3 on it and it runs fine for me.
The iMac is a desktop computer not a laptop. With it you get a bigger screen and the ability to hold more RAM and a bigger hard drive. It wouldn't be that much better for running software than a new MacBook or MacBook Pro would be.

i have a macbook pro 15" retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram when i try to download an HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD? i went to the support on the apple website and looked at the specs that a computer has to meet in order to play HD movies and mine is well above them. Why can't i play the movies?

That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."
