I have a Malware problem, how do I get rid of it?

I have a problem with pop up ads in Safari.  I have deleted the history, but it still recurs.  A friend suggested trying a demo copy of MacScan, which identifies ad.yahoo.com in the spyware cookies, and it removes them, but the pop-ups come back.
I tried contacting Apple Support, but got cut-off.
Can anyone recommend a method to remove this malware, or a scanning and cleaning software that will work?
I'm not very computer literate, so need easy directions.
Thanks!

  • I have a big problem: how do I get rid of a persistent keylogger?

I did a reinstall of OS Snow Leopard and that totally solved my keylogger problem:
    1. My computer was no longer slow, it didn't keep making constant noises as if there was a process in the background when I wasn't using my computer
    2. All websites loaded super quickly and there wasn't this horrible 5 second lag when I typed something or a skip in videos when I watched something...
    but then,,,,,2 days later....
as I was in gmail, MY SCREEN WENT TOTALLY WHITE
and I had to restart my computer...and now THIS ANNOYING KEYLOGGER problem has returned.
How do I get rid of the a*hole who is targeting my computer? I don't have time to reinstall Snow Leopard again and again. How can I get rid of this annoying keylogger that is making my computer SUPER SLOW?

I have to note here that when I launch Activity Monitor- for some reason this computer has loads of inactive processes running ALL THE TIME, when my other computers do not have this problem.

  • Safari and chrome have mal wear.  How do i get rid of it?

safari and chrome have mal wear.  How do i get rid of it?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

    Hello,
Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • Do I have a virus? How do I get rid of it?

When on FB or a website, etc., on my iPad 2,  a page from this website (Lemode-MGZ.com) keeps popping up and taking over the page I am on. Do I have a virus? How do I get rid of it?

These kinds of problems are typically caused by visiting a page that is malicious or has been hacked. That page displays a malicious scam message of some kind. The immediate solution is to clear website data from Safari, according to the instructions at the bottom of this page:
Safari web settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
To keep the problem from recurring, be sure to avoid whatever page you visited that caused the pop-up. If this is a legit site, it may have been hacked. Notify the site owner(s).
If this continues to happen with a wide variety of sites, you may have compromised network hardware. See:
How to manage a hacked wireless router

    Hello Jeff,
Thanks very much for your reply.  I looked over the article you mentioned, but I have tried all of these methods, but only get the response "The item “29394D00” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted."  Similarly, I cannot Get Info on the file.  This is why I'm so concerned, it just appeared on my desktop, but I cannot touch it, or open it or delete it...
If you have any more tricks up your sleeve, I'd love to hear about them...

Some, possibly, but shouldn't be a problem.

Much of it is OSX and other things needed to run your Mac.
See The Storage Display for an explanation, and don't miss the link to Where did my Disk Space go?

  • I have discovered FahCore_a4 running, how do I get rid of this pest?

I thought at one point it would be a good idea to try 'Folding at Home' from Stanford University. I ended up saying forget it, and I thought I had uninstalled it from my 2010 MacBook Pro. Shortly after what I thought was the uninstall, the computers fans would run loud all the time. I never knew what was going on, until today when I decided to look at the activity monitor to kill a different program off that was frozen.
This is when I noticed FahCore_a4 running my CPU at some crazy 300% or higher. No wonder my computer has been running hot for months. I can force quit this thing but it comes back within a minute. There seem to be a few other things associated with it, such as 'FAHClient' I can grab a sample of this process /usr/bin/FAHClient...how do I go about getting rid of this thing for good? Can anyone help me?

    Hello!!
If you still have this problem:
I had the same problem with the Folding @ Home application. Seemed pretty neat at the time huh?
    I found an uninstaller here:
    https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?nomobile=1&f=16&t=24574
At the bottom of the page, there is an entry that leads to an uninstaller. Or: Here: Uninstaller
Install the program and it will remove all signs of F@H. This includes the pesky FahCore_a4 as well as all affiliated items. Restart your computer if you want to be sure!
This worked for me, I hope it does for you!

  • HELP! Trojan or malware and how do I get rid of it?

I was trying to update "flash" the other day, and I must have downloaded something else... now new tabs keep popping up with sites like http://apple.isupportcorp.com/, MacKeeper, http://www.tuneupmymac.com/, etc... also a video opens up at the bottom left of the screen, and when I close it another tab opens up with these sites. Can anyone help me to get rid of whatever this is?

To add some precision to what Kurt is saying, when a panel pops up offering you an adobe update, you NEVER say yes.  You say no, then launch a browser and go to http://get.adobe.com and download the installer yourself using the browser, then when it downloads you use your browser to find it and install it.  Make sure that the site in the url ENDS in "adobe.com"  Not "adobe.net".  Not "adobe.criminalhackers.com".  Not "adobe.stealmyidentity.com".
    The individual downloads are:
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/
(Yes, Kurt, I know that's what you mean -- but people might think that "clicking on Adobe's panel" means "download directly from Adobe".  The distinction here is like when you call a business you can feel comfortable giving them your credit card number, while if they call you then you don't.  They are both conversations on telephones.)
The problem is that Adobe is stupid and stubborn about it.  The real Adobe default update procedure is that Adobe offers you updates in the form of a trojan horse, with no way to tell whether it is the real Adobe "horse" or some imposter.  Yes, Adobe fully INTENDS that you do something risky and stupid to get your software updated.

    Hey ellenk0624,
There are a lot of benefits to running the latest version of Firefox. You should consider [http://input.mozilla.com/en-US/feedback leaving feedback] for the developers so that they can continue to improve the product. There is some information on some known issues with the latest build [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/latest-firefox-issues here]. There is some information in there on crashes.
If you still want to roll back to a previous version of Firefox, just take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[Installing a previous version of Firefox]].

  • Xcode problem,  how do I get rid of doubled up warnings and error messages?

One of my cocoa projects is always showing the compiler warnings and error messages twice. It is only happening in one project which indicates to me that it must be something in this particular project configuration.
I have looked high and low for setting to control this behaviour in Xcode.
There must be a way to correct this behaviour.
    I am using Xcode 3.1.4

You have to get rid of the triggers....and cleaning up the code is the only way to do that. As you've noted, it only happens in one project.
