Do you have a base airport station? What is your internet setup? Is this simply an Airport express that will not be connected at all to a modem with internet access?
Based on what you've said, I'm guessing the answers to the above questions are yes. If so, you'll want to make sure it's set to factory defaults. Hold in the reset button with a paper clip until the light begins to flash. Let it restart and quit flashing. (I'm sorta newbieish, I don't think you're gonna see a green light, I think that means "internet access" However, I think you should see solid amber)
After it's quit flashing, choose your airport station from the Airport dropdown menu in the menu bar. Go to Airport Setup assistant in utilities. Your new AX should show up and be ready to be configured as a plain ol' iTunes streamer.

Hi,
I'm probably jumping the gun here but I've got a Verizon Actiontec GT704WG modem/router and have been disapointed in the last few months by spotty wireless and internet connectivity when nothing else in my house has changed. In addition, I need to make a non-network-ready external HD a network drive so either have to have a NAS adapter (incredibly difficult to find at a local store) and I'm awaiting information on whether or not I have to format (again) my already FAT32 file system drive for an adapter to recognize the drive or whether or not the adapter will work without re-formatting my drive. The work around is the Netgear N300 Wireless ADSL2+ modem router because it will allow me to attach the non-network ready drive without an additional NAS adapter.
However, after reading all the problems that people have with third-party modem/routers and Verizon DSL I'm a little concerned about trying to hook this up as a solution. So I have some questions:
1. Do I have to put the Actiontec GT704WG into bridge mode as Verizon recommends or can I get rid of the Actiontec altogether and just use the new modem/router?
2. I have no idea if I have ADSL+ service with Verizon. Assume I can call and find out or get the info from my account page. But if I do not have that service, will the new modem/router work with basic ADSL service that Verizon provides (ok, that's my really dumb question)?
3. If it's better to just stick with the Verizon modem/router and get a NAS adapter does anyone have a recommendation on a reasonably priced adapter? I don't want a NAS enclosure as I'm not really interested in breaking my external drive and removing the guts so I'd prefer a stand-alone adapter.
4. If I can get rid of the Actiontec altogether, can someone provide some assistance for the proper settings to get me setup without too much fiddling? I'm so sick of spending hours trying to troubleshoot computer issues!
I have an older PC wired into the Actiontec, a network printer attached to the Actiontec, and am running windows XP pro on the PC and have a laptop that is running windows 7. Evil Empire Microsoft has made the lovely choice to make it difficult sometimes for the two OS to communicate and I'm tired of leaving the PC on all the time so that I can use my external drive (if Win7 cooperates) as a network drive through the PC. I'd rather have it as a real network drive operating independently of the PC and point my iTunes, word processing, and database programs to the network drive rather than trying to get them to run through the PC into the external drive.
I wish Verizon would offer more choices on modem/routers, especially ones that offer you the option to add a usb storage device as a network asset!
Thanks for any help! I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I'd like to return the new modem/router ASAP if it's not going to do what I need without tons of hassle.

Go to Solution.Since the Netgear you have is a DSL modem, there is no need to use the ActionTec. Disconnect it from the line and keep it around as a spare modem should you ever need it for troubleshooting purposes. Also, even though the modem you are buying is marketed as an ADSL2+ modem, the technology is specced to be backwards compatible with traditional ADSL. The ActionTec you currently have is an ADSL2+ modem itself, so that should back up that statement enough. The only thing you need to make sure you verify before switching the ActionTec out for the Netgear is what authentication mode the ActionTec is using. This can be set to either PPPoE or DHCP (shows as Routed Bridge mode) and should show up on the main status page when you visit the ActionTec's web inteface. If you're using PPPoE, you should have no issues getting the Netgear to work. If you're using DHCP, you will need to either close the MAC address of the ActionTec into the Netgear, or leave the modem overnight before you are able to obtain an IP address.
Otherwise the Netgear depends on how you decide to set it up. If you set it up through the Web Interface (http://192.168.1.1/ for Netgears, normally), you need to make sure the DSL Virtual Circuit is set to use 0/35, VPI of 0, VCI of 35. The modem should auto-detect this on first boot. Additionally, if you're using PPPoE you'd need to use your Verizon Username and Password to connect the modem. If you set it up using the Setup CD, it should do all of that heavy lifting.
ReadySHARE (what you're looking to set up with the External Hard Drive) uses the same Windows File and Sharing setup, however it does it using Samba shares, FTP and HTTP since the router runs Linux. The reliability you see might remain the same, but I suppose it's one of those things you need to wait and see how it works once the router is set up. Just remember, the speeds to the drive will not be as fast as going through a PC with better hardware under the hood.

It will have to go back to Apple - its only 3 days since it came out of the package and its very disappointing for him. I have two apple id's one from my old laptop and one from my iPhone. I saved my iTunes library to my external hard drive right before my old mac laptop died and then tried to transfer it to my new iMac. Now when I try to play my old music it skips like a scratched cd. Also, now I can't add any music to my iPhone unless it was purchased recently through itunes and downloaded through icloud. I tried to "Organize" my library in hopes of correcting the problem but my iMac just ejects my external harddrive part way through. Please help!

It sounds to me like you have some file corruption somewhere. Either in the transfer of your library to the external or the external itself is flaky if it keeps ejecting. -

You do realize that all iPhone 4S's are still under warranty, although there's a very good chance your freezer trick has tripped a moisture sensor, thus voiding your warranty. Make an appointment at an Apple store, but be prepared for bad news. Good luck.

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express? I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."

In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.

Anyway my wireless computer can connect online with excellent strength but my desktop will not connect. I disconnected the router and pluged the computer into the modemn and I had internet access although my signal was not great. All my lights are solid.

Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Make a smart playlist of your whole library but only checked songs - #4 on http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1801
Highlight all files in that playlist, then drag to the other drive. This isn't preserving any playlists or whatever, just copying files from one drive to another.
You might want to delete the smart playlist this once you are done because it will probably gobble up resources with that many files. -

I had a similar problem myself. This is what helped me.
I went to the App store app, scrolled to the bottom, logged out of the account, re logged in with my Apple ID. Then went back to app updates. Once I put in my ID password all was fine. -

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.
