Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.

There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Connect the external drive and open a Finder window pressing the Finder icon in Dock. Then, drag the folder to Finder, so it will be copied to this external disk.
If you can't copy this folder, probably you have to format the external disk or use an app that allows you to write in that external drive. Mac OS X can't write in NTFS external disks -
I have followed th steps to back up my itunes library to an external hard drive but when I try to drag the itunes folder to the hard drive it does not let me. Any suggestions?

Note that the applet can only contact the server that is was loaded from, so you might want to do a getCodeBase() or something like that to get the server address.

I have had a total meltdown of my system and have had to rebuild my computer because of a lightning strike which took out my main computer and my backup system therefore I do not have a way to restore all of my old files. When I rebuilt my computer I decided to go with Windows 7 rather than staying with Windows Vista when I attach my Apple iPhone to the new computer and tried to sync it, it tells me that it wants to wipe out everything on my phone. My iPhone was backed up to the cloud but I do not see way to restore it from the cloud and I do not want to lose all of my apps and data that are on my iPhone. I have gone to the Apple online store to see if I could restore the apps that I have purchased from their and have not been able to find anything that relates to reinstalling all the apps that I have purchased as well as my bookmarks and addresses as well as a lot of the data in documents to go and do not want to lose them as it is the only place that I have them left. How do I do this without losing all of my apps and data that is on my iPhone?
Please help out of this nightmare and keep me loyal to iPhone.

I have had my iphone 3gs for 3 mths., I have not connected it to my computer to creat a apple id and upload, somebody told me u have to do this right when u get your phone or you will loose everything in your phone. I don't want to loose all my #'s, pictures,texts,etc.

ThanksThey told you incorrectly, although it is not a good idea to rely on the device as a single point of storage.
You must have an Apple ID to purchase content via iTunes, simply log in with that ID in iTunes. Then connect the device and sync it. For detailed instructions, read the manual which is available online or on the device. -
Does anyone know how I can move my very large iTunes music library folder off the computer and onto my fourth generation time capsule, which I'd like to use as an external hard drive?

Do you also plan to use the Time Capsule disk for Time Machine backups? If so, that approach has problems. For one, you don't be backing up your music library. For another, eventually Time Machine will consume all the space on that disk, which will cause problems for your music. -

You can find out your current system version by select About This Mac from the Apple menu. To make sure it is updated, select Software Update from the Apple menu. A Mac from Nov. 2011 is probably running "Lion," and the latest version of Lion is Mac OS X 10.7.4.
But that should not affect the connection of an external hard drive. There are no special updates for connecting standard external drives.
Does the external Toshiba drive connect by USB port? Is it the smaller type that gets power from the port (no conection except for the one cable), or is it larger (with its own power supply)? -

I have not had a computer for several years and I just got a new one. My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. Thank goodness I had it all on my Ipod Nano 2nd GEN. Now my problem is that I don't know how to get the music off my Ipod Nano onto my new computer!!! I was able to get the songs that I purchased thru ITunes by just authorizing my new computer. But I have alot more music that is on my Ipod nano that I can't put into my ITunes library. In fact, I can't even get my music into a file folder on my computer!! I really need help. I don't have any copies of the music anywhere else and some of it is hard to get. How do I get my music either into ITunes or into a file folder on my new computer or even if I could get my computer to recognize my Ipod and sync all the music into windows media or something like that. Every time I connect my IPod all that happens is that it tells me if I sync the IPod that it will replace all the music from my ITunes library on to my IPod. They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod. -

If you previously synced to another computer and do not have the backup files you will lose your app data. You will have to restore to factory defaults/new iPod and then sync to the new computer. -
For some reason I tried to open Iphoto and it keeps giving me an error message that It can not open my current photo library.

Thanks.Ok, here is what I would do for that situation. I would back up all your photos on a memory stick, then create a new photo library and re-upload all the photos to the new library. If iphoto wont let you even copy your photos, you should just schedule an appointment at the genius bar. This has never happened to me, but if it did this is what I would be attempting.

After you get the stuff on the new computer, let iTunes erase the iPod and replace it contents with what is now in the iTunes library. All yu saved games and app date will be lost.
