I can just barely make out top of screen, and I need to get my contacts off and onto the sim card. If anyone can give me the sequence of keys to transfer them I'd appreciate it. I have a new [phone, sim card works in it, but my contacts arent on it. I can't even remember my mothers phone #. Stupid technology.

The drive is probably formatted using the Windows NT filesystem; Mac OS X can't write to this format without additional software. If desired, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it.

You don't state what iMac it is or what you want to use it for an external display with so we cannot answer the question. But without a bootable drive, no you cannot. However you can get the internal HD replaced or you can connect an external HD and boot from it. Without some basics about the computer it's impossible question to answer. Oh my god please give me some insight here, it is so hard to find the right answers and I refuse to lose to this technical box that's driving me nuts! So here's the run down:
My screen broke on laptop...fine. It was connected via HDMI to TV and working fine. Until one day it decided to not turn on. I think due to Windows updates and hubby had no patience so kept restarting
I tried to reload Windows on it, not thinking about the drivers, and I'm pretty sure I managed to reload Windows. Now I need the drivers to install chipset, networking etc. (which I have a disc for)
The problem is I cannot see the screen in order to click "install", I can't see the BIOS or the boot sequence. Ugh! And even if I could, the drivers are not installed to use the CD ROM or VGA port.
I can HEAR Windows start up and turn on! Doo-DO-Doo-DO lol the darn thing is working!
The monitor works in my other laptop.
Would/Should the VGA monitor work if I could get it to start in safe mode?
I've heard of a program that can streamline the driver's into a Windows installation disc so everything is installed altogether but how can I reinstall Windows if the drivers aren't loaded for the CD ROM?
Is there a way to get the necessary drivers installed? or is this notebook now garbage?

Getting the drivers is not the problem. Getting the drivers installed on a laptop with a broken screen...is the problem.
Ok, well sometimes you can't use external monitor to see what is happening in some laptops and the only real way to fix this is to fix the broken screen so you can reformat and resinstall the system again. Those are you only options at this point in time.

How do I use an external Monitor to access files on my iMac with a broken screen?

I have an 20 inch desktop iMac with a broken screen. It is the files on the computer that I wish to recover, after that, I can be on my merry way. Unfortunately, VileVault was on (Not my choice), and for some reason, when I target the disc image of the broken mac with a new one, ONE of the accounts "appears" to be completely empty. All of the accouts were running FileVault, but only one (mine) failed to be transferred because it is "empty". I refuse to believe that my files are actually all gone, because theoretically there should be nothing wrong with the CPU itself, just the screen.
Thus my goal is to use a monitor on my broken screen iMac and simply log in and access my files normally, and perhaps pull them out with a USB or something. I have a DELL monitor, and a DVI (The big hairy plug with screws I think) converter that works with my old iMac, along with the male/male DVI cord. However, when I hook it up, nothing happens. I have tried booting the old CPU while holding F7, and option as I read on a forum, and neither produced results.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to 1. Get the monitor to simply show what's going on on the mac? or 2. Pull out my files through some other means?

If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

If the Pictures are on your SD Card then simply pull the card phone off then you can use a Card Reader and pull them to your Computer = transfer.. But if the pictures are in the Internal memory it may be a bit hard to get them off unless you have a USB cord that goes between the phone and the Computer you might could Transfer them that way.. have you Tried this..

There's no way around activation lock. If you purchased this from someone else you'll have to contact them and have them remove it from their account as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4515. Otherwise you won't be able to use it.

I'm using iOS 7.04 on my iPhone and basically can't use it. The screen is going crazy. I type and special characters show up. I tap an application and it starts wiggling to delete. I've reboot several times. I'm looking at restoring, but that is a pain in the arse (it's my work phone). I'm nervous it will not restore properly.

Don't you feel a bit ripped off with this...You buy a brand new one and within a couple of month they release another version of the same model with a capacitive Screen. Sucks man...I feel like I am a Guinea Pig, They checked if we would love the phone, We did, and now they are upgrading.

Am not sure about your requirement (..sorry, did not understand it)..but on Nokia 5800xm you can either automatically lock the screen after a pre defined period..or simply keep it Unlocked infintely. Menu-->Settings-->Phone-->Phone Management-->Auto Keyguard..set the period to User defined or None as you desire...But, even with this set to None.. the display will go out between 5 and 60 seconds max. I am taking it to the Genius bar, but they say I should back up my data.
How do I do that with no screen?
I DO have an older MacBook, as well as thumb drive, but don't know how to hook them up to treat the disfunctional computer as input.
I am not very jargon-savvy, so if you have an answer please decode strings of alphabetic characters if you use them.
(I do know what a USB port is, but few others...)

I'm assuming your keyboard and trackpad work? What you need to do is to connect it to a display, like the ones everyone used to use when computers weren't all in one. This is quite inconvenient in the case of a macbook, because macbooks don't have the usual port for that. You need is either:
1) HDMI to VGA adapter. 2) Connect a VGA cable to the adapter, and then to the monitor.
OR
1)FireWire to VGA adapter. 2) Connect the VGA cable to the adapter, and then to the monitor.
Then hopefully you should be able to 'see' your computer!
