That question is not even related to your iPod. First step is to "rip" the music CD into your iTunes library. Once the songs on the CD are in your iTunes library, they are like any other songs in your library, and you can sync them to your iPod as desired. NOTE: When you insert a music CD, it appears in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES. If you do not see the sidebar (along left side of window), from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
It was the context of your original question, not the actual task. You can easily add songs files that are on a flash drive to your iTunes library. Open a window that shows the flash drive contents. Drag the song files from that window to the iTunes window, and drop them on your iTunes Music library. Or, use the command
iTunes menu bar -> File -> Add to Library...
NOTE: Open your iTunes preferences, Advanced tab. If the checkbox for Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library is NOT checked, those songs from the flash drive will only be accessible (for playing and syncing) when the flash drive is connected. -

I plugged it into the computer and i have itunes and it updated to the IOS 4.2.1 and now i have downloaded the IOS 4.3 to my computer but now how do i down load it to my ipod. ? when i open up itunes with my ipod and click summary below the picture is said backups and options. If you can't download using your phone, then just download it from Itunes and then sync your phone.

You can get a FireWire 800 (what your Mac has) to FireWire 400 (the older type) adapter AND a FireWire docking cable (probably available on eBay or other online source). The adapter may also be called a FireWire 9-pin to 6-pin adapter. For example

Connect the adapter to the Mac's FireWire 800 port and docking cable to the adapter, and that should work to connect and charge your iPod.
Another way allows you to connect it with a USB port, but it requires a special docking cable AND a FireWire power adapter. The special cable has a dock connector that splits off into two cables, one with a FireWire plug and one with a USB plug. The USB connects to your Mac's USB port (for the data connection) and the FireWire connects to the FireWire power adapter (for power). This was Apple's way to allow Windows users (who usually do not have a PC with FireWire) to use iPods (before the fully USB-compatible 4th gen iPod). It is no longer sold by Apple, but I found an example on eBay

Hi, I realize this may be a futile effort but I thought I would give it a try.
I have an old ipod, 3rd gen 15GB that still works fine, stores a lot of music and plays fine. I would like to update and restore it. I have the old computer I used it with, an iBook G4 OSX 10.4.11 running iTunes 8.2.1, the most updated it can get for this computer I think.
Im just wondering how I can restore the ipod and put mp3s on it. It doesnt show up in itunes but appears to be charging when I plug it in with the old firewire cable. its working ok to the best of my knowledge and I would like to do a hard reset or something but I cant figure out how. i have an old ipod touch 3rd generation and when ever i open it , it doesn't open or it turn blank, if i click on the home button and the power button to do the reboot it works but when i remove my finger it close. i can acced the ipod from the cpu but not from the actual device
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If the iTunes purchases are not in your iTunes library you can redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If you restore from backup, not that synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup and thus if those items are not in the iTunes library they can't be restored to the iPod during the latter part of the restore process. -

It sounds like may actually have a 2nd generation. Please check the model number on the back, if it is A1288, it is a 2nd generation and can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1.

It may be damaged. You have to make sure it is completely dry on the inside. Any moisture can cause short circuits and damage if you try to use the iPod.
If it has already been left alone drying out for at least several days, the iPod is probably damaged and will no longer function.
