I have a problem capturing in FCP.

I have it set to non-controlable device. I am rolling and you see the footage in the log and capture window just fine, so I hit Log Clip 15 to 20 seconds go by without a hitch and then it stops and this message pops up, "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved." Anybody have any suggestions?
Thank you,
Chad

  • Problem capturing with Final Cut Pro 5.0

I seem to have a problem capturing to my new macbook with FCP 5.0 installed. I know how to capture and I've done it a million times before but this is the first time with this Mac.
I'm capturing from my MiniDV camera via firewire. I've checked if my scratchdiscs have enough room and it has plenty (250gb).
Everytime I go to capture, a box comes up that says "General Error" with no error code. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem with me. J just bought a macbook pro 2,33 Hz.
When I capture on my FCP 5.0.4 there is no problem but when I push the " esc" button to close the capture he FCP crashes. Help me I bought the Macbook pro to edit on location and now I can't capture.
I use a DSR11 of sony to capture. Fire wire input (SD PAL)
Even I use a XD-cam same problem no capture.
    HELP ME PLEASE !!!

  • Problems capturing onto an external harddrive

I just got a new Lacie Brick external harddrive, and looking around these forums, it seems that was a bad choice. I have no problem capturing footage right onto my computer, but when I try to capture onto the Lacie then Finalcut freezes and won't shut down. Is there any way to fix this or should I just get a different harddrive?

    > However, it
can be used as a back up drive....
    And an excellent one too!
There's a lot of rubbish talked about LaCie external hard drives - my "Big Disk" 500 GB unit has worked hard, flawlessly for a year or so now.
Unfortunately (maybe because they're small) hard drives get moved around and abused during use. If they aren't fan cooled, they can overheat if there isn't free air space (and common sense) around them.
Moving an external HD while it's working is a pretty sure way to wreck it - and so is allowing it to get too hot.
Use your brick - it's a pity it isn't Firewire but it will still be a valuable asset to you for backup as X said.

  • Problem capturing and/or importing hd video

I have always edited standard def video but I trying to switch to hd. I have no problem capturing standard def video into final cut.
Final cut express 4 will not capture my 1080i hd footage that I shot on a professional sony cam. So then I captured the footage on quicktime thinking I could import into final cut from quicktime. When I try to import, the only thing that shows up is the audio and when I put it in the timeline it says 'codec could not be opened'. I called apple support and he suggested that I need to convert the footage but I don't even know what program to use. I would think this sony camera shoots pretty standard format that would be universal. Is there a setting in final cut that I need to change? Whats going on? If I can't get this fixed I may have to go back to standard def video. Thanks.

Exactly what model Mac do you have, what versions of OS X, QT and FCE are installed?  What is the capacity and free space on your system HD?
Are you using an external hard drive for your video ... if so, what make/model, capacity and free space, and is it connected to your Mac via USB, FW or TB?
(FYI, dropped frames typically occur when your hard drive cannot deliver the video fast enough; this usually happens if your system HD and/or external hard drive are more than 50% full and/or if you are using an external USB drive. It can also happen if you have other programs running the same time as FCE.)

  • Problem Capturing in FCE 1.0

Okay, I know this is an ancient program, but it has worked well for me since 2003. I have FCE HD 4.0 installed on my laptop, but I prefer using my desktop for editing and it's a G5 (not intel) and won't run 4.0.
Anyway, as I said, it's worked pretty well for years. Recently, I consistently have had problems capturing video. The capture stops way before the out mark. Obviously, this is a real hassle. Has anyone run across this problem and if so, how did they resolve it? I have plenty of HD space and the capture disk is an internal drive.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stuart

What do you mean by saying FCE 4 won't work on a G5?
It will even work on a G4.
The only thing you need an Intel processor for is AVCHD which  you are apparently not using.

  • Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?

  • Problem Capturing from Sony HVR-A1U to FCP 5 using HDV preset

    Hi,
i just got a Sony HVR-A1U and am new to HDV. I am a professional editor so i have a full understanding of FCP. Here are my problems and questions.
Specs of system : Power Mac Dual 2Ghz G5, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200 64mb (Do i need a better GFX card?)
    1) When i setup the project settings at the start I selected HDV 1080i/60, it automatically states "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding Hardware card." I am quite sure that i have all the codecs i could have without having a hardware card, since i don't have a hardware card. Does this mean that i need a blackmagic HD card or a Kona card just to process the HD into FCP as HDV 1060i/60 even though it is through firewire?
    2) I advanced to the Log & Capture mode with the HDV settings, set properly across the board. I can not see picture, can hear audio and can log clips. When i capture it captures black for video but captures the audio just fine. I figure this is because of the missing codec which encodes HDV for FCP from Sony's HDV encoding?
    3) I can capture on the fly with the Apple Intermediate Codec, no Log and Capture screen comes up, just a dialogue box that asks me to name the clip. I understand what this codec is and find that i am stuck at the moment using this until I find a way to capture the other way. Is there anyway to have the Log and Capture screen launch using this codec?
    4) I can not have pre-logged clips using other methods and then batch capture them using the Apple Intermediate Codec, it just reverts to capturing on the fly. Anyway to Batch Capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec?
Funny thing is that i can digitize fine in iMovie HD although i don't know what codec it is using. This totally baffles me that it works in a certain manner, i can get the job done, but not the way i should be able to. I've been using FCP since '99 and have never encountered something in this manner. And since this is my first experience with FCP and HDV i have nowhere to go from here except get some help or settle for what i can do and change my normal post-production workflow.
A question i really want to know about is whether i need an extra hardware compnent, i know i asked that question above, and i could understand if i did. (i.e GFX card or Capture card - even though i am going through firewire)?
I appreciate any help, i might not respond over the next couple of weeks because i am shooting in Europe and will be back stateside at the start of February, so i will not be active on this post until then. Any input would be great and when i get back i will have loads of footage that i will need to digitize, so i will be very open to help with troubleshooting as well.
    Thanks again!!!

    PowerMac G5 DP 2Ghz, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200, 20" Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4)

All the settings are proper, like i said, it captures with the apple codec for HDV but that is only good for on the fly. iMovie captures it fine, it's just when the settings in FCP are set for HDV it won't capture picture through log and capture.
Are you guys actually reading my post??? I have given all the information that i can, settings are proper, so the post so far are completely redundant.

  • Unable to capture in FCP 6, HELP!

Trying to capture dvx100 footage using FCP 6(studio2) with no luck.
When initiating log and capture, I can control my camera via FW, but preview is disabled as well as
    ability to capture footage.
I have tried deleting pref's, deleting QT prefs, triple checked settings (NTSC DV), tried variations of
turning camera off/on during opening of FCP as well as using alternate ports.
I'm at a loss. Can anyone help!!?!?!
    - Need to cut something asap.
    Thanks.

Thank you Patrick. You have helped me before, so thanks again.
I do not have anything else connected to the firewire ports. I have an external hard drive, but I have tried to capture with and without the hard drive attached. I did recently back up using Carbon Copy Cloner to another hard drive, if anyone thinks this may be the issue.
I can't recall the exact error message in FCP (I have deleted the program trying to fix the issue, and focus on the capture problem in Quicktime thinking that if Quicktime and iMovie both don't capture, that the problem is not with FCP, but either with the OS or the back end of QT) I can re-install FCP to give you the exact FCP error message if you would like me too. Ie, if the exact error message is necessary.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • Sped up clip after capture in FCP 6.0

Everything I capture in FCP 6.0 from my JVC GRD 850 is sped up. I'm using OS X.4.11 All of my settings seem to be OK. Any idea what's going on?

It's not because of incorrect settings then. Next thing to try:
    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

  • Can't use HDV quicktime .mov files (captured in FCP on a mac at work) on PC

    Hiya everyone!
I've taken some work home from the macs at work, but can't open it on my PC.
Footage was captured in FCP on a mac at work, HDV quicktime .mov, but won't open in the newest quicktime, windows media player and more importantly in Adobe After Effects CS3 or Premiere Pro CS3 on my PC at home.
When I try opening the files in quicktime, the screen is white, but the audio plays. They don't open in windows media player at all. When I try to import them into Premiere, I get a message reading, "Error Message, Codec missing or unavailable". But they import into After Effects, except they only play as white...
I've tried converting them into almost everything, and they often play (as .avi for example in the newest QT, WMP, Adobe Premiere and AE), but they increase A LOT in size and decrease A LOT in quality.
The HDV files that won't open read as:
    Source: *.mov
    Format: HDV 1080i50, 1920 x 1080, Millions 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), 48.000 kHz
    Movie FPS: 25.00
    Playing FPS: (Available when playing)
    Data Size: 69.53 MB
    Data Rate: 28.10 mbits/sec
    Current time: 00:00:01.64
    Duration: 00:00:20.76
    Normal size: 1920 x 1080
    Current size: 1920 x 1080
Anything smaller than 1920 x 1080 plays fine.
I've been all through google, and the adobe and apple sites, and the best I could find is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7753066#7753066
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8159317&#8159317
My problem is almost identical to these 2...
No one in the whole world seems to have an answer...
Does anyone here know how I can use the HDV files from the work macs on my PC at home?
    -Kaiwin

HEy, I have been looking into this problem... i also wanted to play quicktime files using my pc... The last thing i tried was downloadiing these codecs
    1)apple pro res *for pc
    2)mpeg 2 codec for pc
I have HDV files captured on a Mac G5 they are 30p 720,
I think i am close to solving the problem because: before installing the codecs i couldn't see the video and only audio.. but now i open it and i can see the video partially... here are my screen captures....
anyone interested in getting this solved???,... i would also like some help in importing m2t files from VLC player to HDV split where they can be read and edited. Thank you.
Ultimately my goal is to be able to edit these HDV files directly and export them back out with good quality.. because my only editing choice right now is Windows movie maker.
this is an error i got from the HDV split program. Its supposed to read m2t files..

  • PROBLEMS CAPTURING, DROP FRAMES ON 4.5

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO SINCE I HAVE UPDATED TO THE LATEST VERSION I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS CAPTURING.

I'm not at my Mac right now to check, but it should be something like this:
Open System Preferences (usually located on the Dock).
    Click on the Spotlight pane.
Click on the Privacy tab or button.
There should be an ADD button, click that and add whatever volume(s) you've assign as FCP capture/scratch discs.
That will keep Spotlight from trying to index files as you capture footage which is the root cause of capture problems when using a non-recommended version of FCP with OS 10.4.9.

  • Problems capturing clips

I using the latest version of FCP with a Blackmagic card. Everything has been working fine until today. I'm having problems capturing clips. I'll start Log & Capture, grab a clip, the window displays it is capturing it, and then when I look at the logging bin, my clip is not there. But if I look in the capture scratch folder, the clip is there.
Now, if I try to import that or any other clip, FCP gives me an error message. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Probably a Black Magic issue so be prepared to talk to them.
To debug this, you have to take the Black Magic stuff out of the equation to determine if FCP is at fault. If you have any DV device, try to capture from it.

  • Problems capturing audio track

I am having a problem capturing from my DV camera into Final Cut Pro (version 5.1.4) on a souped up G4. I made a few changes to the hardware configuration recently, but the problem started prior to these upgrades so I don't think it is related. I installed an ATA drive and replaced a defective USB2/FW800 Sonnet card.
I thought I had a problem with the playback head on the camera when the capture issues first started. I got black horizontal bars on the screen of the camera as well as on the screen when I attempted to capture footage. I also got timecode error messages. I was able to capture some of the tape in FCP using a different camera, but upon examination I noticed both audio tracks are missing small segments of data. There are a few blank spots scattered throughout the footage. The picture is fine. The problem is in the audio tracks only. both tracks in the same area.
One of the camera repair people I talked to said the tape could be bad. Does this make sense if only the audio track is missing segments and the picture track is complete?
Thanks, I appreciate any help you can give me in figuring this out.

Thanks for your suggestions and opinion. I am reading everyone's comments. In order to get the most from this discussion, please answer each of these questions separately so the people who are following it will have no trouble following the answers that apply to each.
I distinctly remember when I was shooting the footage of the problem tape, the picture looked fine. It was not until I tried to review the tape that the problem appeared.
    1. Is it possible that the camera works for shooting but the camera playback head is causing problems?
    2. Can a bad playback head damage the tape on playback?
    2. Can shooting onto a bad tape damage a camera?
    3. Is it possible to shoot with a camera with a bad playback and then use another drive for playback?
Thanks for your help. I do know a few people who are having playback problems, since all the tape cameras are getting old, so we appreciate this discussion.
