I have a question mark over my iPhoto icon.

I can't find it when I search my apps or trash. I have a MacOSX 10.5.8 and no original discs from installation. I also can't seem to get the Mac App store to run maybe because my Mac is too old? Not sure what to do and I am scared I have lost all my photos:(

1 - your photos are in the iPhoto library and are not affected by losing the iPhoto application
2 - if you have lost the original restore disks you can contact Apple to purchase replacements

  • Question mark over the Mail icon

What can I do if there is a question mark over the mail icon in dock... I can't open the Mail now. Thanks!

you can reinstall Mail using the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD and open it in finder. among other things you should see a folder called "optional installs". Open it and double-click on Optional Installs.mpkg. Follow the instructions. at the appropriate page you'll have to check the box for "Mail" on the list of software you want to install.
This will install Mail 3.0. To update it to the latest version of mail reinstall

  • Why is there a question mark over a printer icon on my dock?

I have just installed a new printer on my computer.  I also have another printer installed along with this one.  I put this new printer's icon on my dock.  Now my old printer icon is showing a question mark over it.  I set my new printer to be the default printer.  Didn't know if that was the problem, so reset the default printer to be my old printer, but icon stayed.  Reset new printer to default and then turned on the old printer.  Question mark still there.  Set old printer to default and tuned on the old printer.  Set old printer to scan to see if setting it up to use it would do something.  Question mark still there.  I am stumped.  Anyone know why this is happening?  It just bugs me that it won't go away.

Noticed in the print summary that the printer icon had a pause symbol over it even though there was no print job listed that could be deleted.  Then got brilliant idea - took icon off of dock and dragged a new icon to dock - voila!! question mark gone!!  Crazy.  Anyway thanks for your thoughts as it led me to try this.

  • Question Mark over system Preferences on Doc....

Hi, well I haven't had my mac long, and today I have a question mark over my system pref icon, and cannot access it. I can't even find it in the apps folder..?
Does anybody know how to fix this please?
I have looked and some people suggest a reinstall of OS, which is fine but I have no back ups yet as I haven't had it long and don't even know how to back it up! (Ex PC user...) would I lose all my photos etc in aperture...?
    many thanks in advance

The question mark means it cannot find System Preferences, which apparently, you can't either.
Have you looked in the Trash to see if you may have accidentally moved it there?
There is also a program called Pacifist which will allow you to get individual items out of the installation disks.
Finally, an Archive and Install with the option to Preserve User and Network settings will save all of your data. However, I wouldn't trust anything. If your photos are important, burn them to a DVD and then do the archive and install.

  • Why do I have a question mark in my Finder window.  I have no previous or next window arrows.

My finder windows now have a question mark next to Action icon.  I cannot flip between previous and next window.

The question is an orphaned alias, command-drag it off and "poof" it.
Then right click on Finder toolbar and choose "Customize toolbar" and drag the "Back" button onto it.

  • Bought new iworks suite this summer - can't open numbers...has a faded question mark over the icon

I bought new updated iworks suite this summer.  I've opened and used pages, but when I tried to open the icon on Numbers on my dock it will not open.  I only get options" and then can remove from dock.  there is a faded question mark over the numbers icon.  any help would be appreciated.  thanks, K

Where are the applications stored on your HD ?
    Keynote.app, Numbers.app and Pages.app must be located
    in the folder Applications:iWork '09
What you see in the Dock are symbolic links (kind of aliases) to the applications.
It seems that for some reason the link between the Numbers symbolic link and the app is broken.
    (1) check the locations of the applications and if they aren't in the correct ones, repair this oddity.
    (2) If needed, uncheck the local menu item : Dock > Numbers > Options > Keep in the Dock
then drag the icon to the Desktop. You will get the Poof icon saying that the symlink is destroyed.
    (3) Double click the Numbers.app icon to run the app.
    (4) Now you will be able to check the local menu item : Dock > Numbers > Options > Keep in the Dock
so that the Numbers icon will remain in the dock when you quit the app.

  • I purchased a new MacBook Pro and when transferring files iphoto did not transfer.  I have a question mark in the place of the icon.  My pictures are in library but can't properly access iphoto.  Thank you

I purchased a new MacBook Pro and when transferring files iphoto did not transfer.  I have a question mark in the place of the icon.  My pictures are in library but can't properly access iphoto.  Thank you

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • IPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! Help?

iPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! It is completely inaccessible. How can i restore this to my computer and get my pics back?

iPhoto has a question mark over it.
You mean in the Dock?  Then the Dock icon is no longer linked to the application.
Did you upgrade MacOS X, so iPhoto is no longer compatible?
If you moved or deleted iPhoto, reinstall it. It will depend on your iPhoto version and MacOS X version, how to reinstall.
If your profile signature ""OS X (10.6.8)" is still valid, reinstall iPhoto from your system install disks, if iPhoto came preinstalled on your Mac, or from your iLife install disks.
If you already upgraded to Yosemite, you can reinstall iPhoto from the App Store.

  • My iphoto has a transparent question mark over it and will not open. How do I fix this?

My iphoto on my imac will not open. It has a transparent question mark over it...how do I fix it?

Is the question mark on the Dock at the bottom of your screen? Then it means that the Dock can't find the application.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

Hello, I have a question mark on the dock where once were icons which were not opening for

Install it from your iLife or computer's original disk, using Pacifist if needed, and then run the latest applicable iPhoto updater.
will it erase any photos I have on my computer?

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
