I have a RAM problem,, my Mavericks won't boot

My 2009 iMac desktop won't boot up. It starts to, but once the apple icon appears, it shuts down after about 20 seconds.  Sometimes, instead of shutting down, it sends out alarm bursts in sets of 3 beeps at a time.  Obviously I have no start-up disk for Mavericks, but I do have my old Snow Leopard disk.  What can I do to restore it?  I already removed the RAM, shot some compressed air over the cards and into the slots to clean out the dust but I still have the same problem.

Your RAM is failing or you might be able to clean it using a soft cloth.

Any ideas I'm pulling my hair out !!!

Seems to be a hardware issue and you'll have to get it checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider, an Apple Store , to see if other 3rd party charger will work at their place.

  • OSX Mavericks won't boot after changing user home folder

    Hi guys,
I have a clean install of Mavericks on my macbook pro 17" and have two drives in. One is hdd (in place of superdrive) and the other is ssd where OSX is installed.
    I have uset the following:
If you right-click on the User in the Users & Groups system preferences, choose "Advanced Options..."
You can then change the location of the home folder
to change location of my user home folder and set it up to be on the hdd but now OSX Mavericks won't boot. I get the progress bar on boot and it just freezes no matter how long I left it.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks!

I managed to boot after dozen tries and restored the location of the home folder to where it was at the first place.
The thing is, on my second drive I have the whole user folder with data, settings and everything else in it and would really like to use it in the Mavericks.
I guess I could just copy it over the one in the Mavericks and it should be good?
Not sure, why this is the issue now since on previous OSX releases this home folder changing thing worked without problems :/
If anyone else have the solution for this problem please do feel free to let me know!
    Thanks!

Go to the genius bar. You've mucked up your MBP OS and it requires a hands on repair.

  • OS Mavericks won't boot without using safe mode

My macbook pro won't boot up when its not in safe mode. It gets to the apple screen and then freezes but I can move the mouse around. Safari also won't open even when it is booted in safe mode.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the suggestion of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only run the test in safe mode, proceed anyway.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important, so don't worry about it.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The script will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window.
If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the output, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the output on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • MBP upgraded to Mavericks won't boot off of external drive

Now that I have upgraded my MBP to Mavericks I can not longer boot off of extrenal drives like I has in the past. I hold down the option key at boot up and it display the external drive as a bootable option but once clicked....it just hangs.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks,
    D

Well, want to rule out drive case,, as those do come up with EVERY new OS, just hit Lion 10.7 forum when it came out, or when 10.6.0 came out 3 yrs ago.
Maybe the power adapter is the weak link.
As I said, and goes back yrs, not a fan of FW/USB/eSATA case from major vendors (LaCie, WD, Seagate etc).
And you could try another case. Be sure to buy a case that lets you swap in your own hard drives though.

  • Same problem, old topic - won't boot get question mark folder

I have a G4 14" ibook that has stopped working. When I boot I get the folder with the flashing question mark. here are some specifics:
    - fan starts then stops
    - hard drive starts up
    - pram has been reset
    - booting in target mode allows hard drive to function properly on my imac (not a hard drive or hard drive connector problem)
    - removed logic board and had a circuit technician inspect all solder joints under very high mag with no problems evident
    - replaced logic board with a known good logic board and have the same problem
I really could care less about the computer at this point as it has run its course, but it is now one of those things that if I don't figure out the problem I'll begin loosing sleep.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd enjoy attempting them.

If the optical drive on the iBook G4 is failing, the only way to load 10.3 on a G4 14" (assuming it came with 10.3 or less), is via another PowerPC Mac, or an external Firewire optical drive.
Three facts to keep in mind:
    1. Macs can't boot an older operating system than shipped with them.
    2. All Macs shipped with system specific discs, which if lost need to be replaced either by calling AppleCare, or the last seller if non-Apple authorized for those discs if Apple no longer has them.
If you lost the discs, and bought from an Apple Authorized seller, and AppleCare no longer has them, obtaining them is very difficult, and it is best to piecemeal get the separately sold operating system, and applications. Keep in mind for machines like the iBook G4 that's the only way to install Classic on them. Elements of iLife may have been included depending on age:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1490798&tstart=0
Newer versions of iLife may install depending on system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27615
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/systemrequirements.html
Appleworks never was sold with the retail installer discs, though a retail version may be available that will work on it.
Hardware Test never was sold with the retail installer discs.
    3. Macs can install operating systems newer than them which are retail (non-OEM, non-Update, non-DropIn, not labelled for specific Mac).

  • RAM upgrade, now MacBook won't boot

I bought 2 1 gig RAM sticks from Fry's and installed them in my MacBook and it won't boot. The LED on the front is flashing once per second, which according to the Support website means that it's not recognizing the RAM. So, I put the original 2 X 256 megs of RAM back into the MacBook and it still won't boot, LED is flashing. What the ****? I've tried inserting the RAM several times, I've firmly inserted it, it feels like it's seated properly, and I inserted it the correct way according to the little diagram in the battery bay. Don't know what else to try......

They go in quite hard. Watch this video and try installing again.

  • Do I have a ram problem?

I've been having a terrible time with iMovie crashing and restarting my Mid 2012 MBP (no retina) this last couple of days. I've tried everything I can think of to resolve the issue including : resetting PRAM, deleting iMovie plist, safe mode (iMovie crashes immediately upon open in safe mode), removing/reinstalling iMovie, reinstalling Mavericks. So far nothing's worked except the PRAM reset, which allowed me to export a file once (and the finished movie was all garbled and unwatchable), then it immediately went back to its bad behavior.
So I ran hardware test by holding 'D' on startup, and the system froze during the memory test. I remembered that back in April, I installed additional ram (went from 4g to 16g) because of all the video editing I've been doing. So I went on the net and downloaded memtest, opened terminal and ran it and, lo, kernel panic while testing. Here's the log:

I'll try reinstalling my old ram tonight to see if that resolves my issue.
Is it normal for ram sticks to fail over time, or should I have noticed issues immediately?
    Thanks!
    Bryan

    Bryan,
RAM generally doesn’t degrade over time, but depending upon where in the RAM the fault exists, you might not have noticed an issue immediately — for example, if it exists in a spot where it is used only when the 14th gigabyte is being allocated, you wouldn’t have noticed it until the first time that that much RAM was being allocated and used. You could try swapping just one of the 8 GB RAM modules at a time, running with 10 GB of RAM, to see if the fault is only in a single 8 GB module, or if both of the 8 GB modules have a fault.

  • I have a ram problem, can somebody please help me?

    Hello
This is the first time I've put a computer together from scratch (I got some help from a friend though). What I wonder is if there is a manual for the MSI mothercards somewhere on the net because I didn't get any good description  in the package, and I can't find the spot for audi and USB inputs. I also would like to know how many memorysticks i can use, because if i put in 3 of them the computer starts to beep. Can somebody please help me?
    My specs are:
    Q-tec midi Tower
    MSI K8N Neo2-FX, nForce3
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz socket 939
    Zalman P4 CNPS-7700-CU
    XFX Geforce FX5500 128MB DDR
    Samsung Spinpoint P120 200GB
    Sony DVD burner DL
    Sony floppydisk
    Cosair Value S. PC3200 DDR-dimm 512MB unbuffered non-Parity, 64Meg x 64, CL2.5
(I have 3 of these but I can only have 2 at a time or the computer wont work)

Congrats on 'Rolling your Own' for the first time.  I'm certainly no expert although I have sucessfully built a few.  Actually, my specs are almost identical except I'm using Kingston Value Ram instead of Cosair.  As far as your first question, I assume you mean the internal USB/MB connectors and the MB audio connector(s).  The information is in the MSI Neo2 Plat manual although you have to look closely and move back and forth between the MB schemaic and the section(s) describing the connections to get a clear fix.  The MB USB connectors are on the side of the MB furthest from the RAM slots and about in the center, (JUSB1 or JUSB2).  The audio connector (JAUD1 is located on the same side of the MB as the USB connectors only near the rear panel end, (close to the orange PCI slot).  As you, I found that that I could not use three ram sticks as I could in my old K7 board and when I bought two sets of matched ram I found that it didn't like 4 sticks either.  Three:  Would'nt post  Four:  Instability and an initial  hit in performance;  although I was able to finally coax it to 200mhz Dual Channel it wasn't worth it because of the random crashes n Windows I was getting. I have also discovered the hard way that for some reason my board at least is hypersensitive to IDE  cables, (Would not recognize any secondary IDE device on Channel 1 until I found the right cable) and it does not like Sound Blaster audio cards prior to Audigy 2 ZS.  Actually, it only tolerates a ZS and I had problems and it didn't like my new X-Fi at all until I moved it to the PCI slot closest to my video card.  I was getting random BSODS and crashes, (one that took out my OS).  Since I move the card things appear to be more stable, so far.  Anyway good luck.

  • Per Yahoo, I have a cookie problem. Yahoo won't keep me logged in using Firefox 4.0.1

Is there a Firefox 4.0.1 user who is also a Yahoo user who has figured out how to stay logged into Yahoo?
According to other things I've seen on Firefox, my cookies are set correctly, and I'm allowing passwords to be saved on all sites with NO exceptions, but when I leave Yahoo, or simply brows in Yahoo, suddenly I have to log in again.

  • Mavericks won't boot.

I installed the Mavericks upgrade and everything seemed fine but when it restarted I got a cryptic error page which repeated a few times then nothing.
I booted on Command-R then ran the disk utility but all partitions were good.  I re-installed Mountain Lion which worked fine but when I tried the Mavericks upgrade I got the same error page.  I'm trying to avoid a total erase of my hard disk as that would take forever and may not solve the problem.  Any ideas?

When I disconnect the Matrox and boot the macbook it will boot just fine and the progress bar won't be stuck at the boot.
But if I have Matrox connected during the boot then it gets stuck at the boot and progress bar after couple of spinnings just freezes.

  • RAM errors now iMac won't boot

My 24" iMac had some graphical glitches and froze up, so I ran MemTest86 on it and got a number of errors reported on my RAM.
I had upgraded from 2x1gb to 2x2gb and kept the old RAM, so I gave that a try. This time MemTest86 itself came up with graphical glitches and reported problems on this RAM as well.
I gave up for the night and the following morning when trying to boot, all I get is the monitor powering up and the Mac boot sound. The system then reboots immediately and does the same thing over and over. Screen powers on (stays black though) and sound plays. I never get to a gray screen at all nor does the Apple logo ever appear.
Trying to boot to safe mode, off cd, single user mode are all unsuccessful, I never get out of the boot sound loop.
    NVRAM/PRAM reset attempted, likely unsuccessful.
I've tried booting with 1 DIMM and 2 DIMM across the different RAM I have, but the same thing always occurs. Only time I get different behaviour is when booting with no RAM, and then I just get a beeping tone.
Any ideas on how to recover?

Try removing and reseating, if it still fails then replace the RAM. RAM can and sometimes does fail. If you still have the original RAM lying around then try booting from that to see if the errors disappear if they do then you know the added RAM has failed and needs replacement.

I've jumpstarted the server once before without any problems, so I don't know what might have changed.  I'm used raidctl to image mirror 2 disks; that's the only difference.
    Any suggestions?

After further searching, I found a clue here; seems mini-root on my jumpstart server did not point properly to the correct hosts, ipnodes, and netmasks files.
    http://solaris.reys.net/english/2006/09/be_careful_with_jumpstart_miniroot
The jumpstart script bailed after the errors with /etc/hosts and never finished setting up the target disk for properly booting up.
Someone in my organization must have allowed the mini-root path to be shared as rw instead of just ro at some point.
