I have a REALLY stupid Q....

My wife has a iMac G5 Power PC machine currently (just bought it in October of 2005 just before the Intel machines came out; funny story, relay it later) and now we are considering getting a Mac laptop. Here's the thing: I thought it better to get a Power Book since her programs are NOT Universal and that there may be some networking/syncing problems with an Intel machine. My wife argues the price difference and the technology is better in the MacBook. Quite frankly, I see her point, but would like to know, is there any compatability problems (networking, syncing, software, Wireless tech) between PowerPC chips and Intel chips? I know of Rosetta and what it is used for, I just don't want it bogging down her laptop. Thanks
350Mhz/10G   Mac OS X (10.3)

The network issues ( (networking, syncing, Wireless tech)etc are no issue at all, John .
We simply brought home the MacBook, went through the regular setup process, and it was up and running on our longstanding Airport Extreme and DSL modem network that also hosts an imacG5 , a PB12, an iBook G4, an IBM thinkpad, and the occasional visitors iBooks and PowerBooks too. Took less than ten minutes from opening the box to surfing the net, syncing bookmarks and transferring files.
No problems with doing this at all.
As far as software goes, Rosetta will slow down things like Photoshop to some extent until a UB version arrives, but it really isn't especially noticeable to me on a MacBook with 2Gig of RAM. Get plenty of RAM though. Apps running under Rosetta use more than they do when running "native". The MacBooks really run much better with at least 1 Gig, preferably 2. Good quality third party RAM will run fine in them, of course, and they are one of the easiest of all to install such things in yourself.
The only thing I would be wary about is using "migration asistant" too freely when setting it up. THis will bring over things like Safari PPC "plugins" which give Safari indigestion, and may lead to a few other issues, too, if you have non-standard OS items installed. Best to just transfer docs , music, photos, bookmarks etc, over firewire or the network, and install apps and the like afresh from CD or .dmg files.
Cheers

In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

  • Help me if you dare! Sorry I have a really complicated issue....

    Hi guys,
I have a macbook, white, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
And I have a really complicated issue.
I have a Apple iBook Clamshell with no Airport, and a need to connect wirelessly.
I figured (since I've done it before with my Xbox 360) that I could connect the two via Ethernet and "Share" their connection.
The Clamshell's specs are: 466 MHz, 128 MB RAM and OS 9.1 (I know ancient...)
So if anyone has a solution, please respond!

Connect them with an Ethernet cable and start Internet sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences. You may need to change settings in the Firewall tab of the Security pane.

You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
Here's the link for the US.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it.

I can't manage to change the page layout of my document - to switch betwen landscape and portrait pages. I've tried putting every break in it possible.
I know I am being really stupid, but I'm tearing my hair out (hence posting for the first time ever on a forum!)......any tips?!

Every Mac comes with Preview .app in your Applications folder.
You open multiple pdfs in Preview :
+Menu > View > Sidebar > Show Sidebar > click on the thumbnail icon (little black squares) at the bottom of the sidebar+
You can drag the thumbnails of your individual or more pages from one .pdf sidebar to the other or to or from the desktop.
In Pages select an object, textbox, shape or table, by holding down the command key and clicking on the object edge.
You can drag the corner around by again holding the command key down whilst pointing near a corner. The cursor turns into a curved arrow, drag the object around.
    Alternatively:
    +Inspector > Metrics > Rotate+

  • I have a really high score on a game app on the ipad 2 ... Can I sync or transfer ONLY that game to my ipad 3 somehow ???

I have a really high score on a game app on my ipad 2 ... I want to sync, or transfer, or move somehow,  the app with the high score to my ipad 3... Can I do it without syncing the whole ipad?? Or is there another way to get the game app to my "3" ???

You would need to backup your data to iTunes or iCloud and then restore from backup on the iPad 3. Content should reside on your computer or you can reload apps from the cloud. I don't believe you can just restore one app

  • Just fancy asking some questions which i have never really thought about

I just fancied asking some basic questions which i have never really thought about, but suppose i should know.
    The first one is:
A java program is executed through the main method
public static void main(String[] args)So this method is passed a String array but i never pass the array to it, so who does?
And secondly, you can have variables of type int and variables of type Integer. What is the difference?
    thanks

I'll take a stab with some overly-simplistic answers. Corrections most welcome.
A java program is executed through the main method
public static void main(String[] args)So this method is passed a String array but i never pass the array to it, so who does? The OS passes the parameters to the JVM and the JVM calls the main method with the parameters from the OS.
And secondly, you can have variables of type int and variables of type Integer. What is the difference?Integer is a wrapper class for the primitive int type. It allows you to use int-type concepts in places where an Object is required. But don't over-use these as there is a memory and performance overhead that must be taken into consideration.

You remove them the same way you put them there.  The sync process.
Deselect them in itunes and sync.

  • Have I done a really stupid thing?

    Hi
On a whim, I recently purchased a 20" Apple Cinema Display on ebay. Whilst the listing said it was faulty owing to a damaged power supply - that had been 'professionally repaired' - I thought it would be a good buy and I could get the problem diagnosed and hopefully just replace the power supply.
I won the auction and paid just £100 ($190) so I thought, even if I bought a new power supply, I would have a bargain.
The display arrived this morning and, apart from a few cosmetic marks on the casing, it's in pretty good condition, the LCD is unmarked. However, the 'professional repair' of the power supply looks to be a joke and the power adapter has been replaced with a very cheap looking black plastic box. In addition the DVI(?) connector appears to have been dismantled and put back together with sellotape!
I was under the impression that the power supply can simply be unplugged from the back of the display - a la my iMac - so I could test it using the power supply on a colleague's display in work, but this does not appear possible? (well, not easily anyway).
So, getting to the point, has anyone ever replaced the power supply on an ACD and how much did it cost? Also, I was expecting there to be a plug for a wall power outlet? Does the screen just connect to the DVI output on my powerbook? Do I need to plug in any of the USB/FW connections?
I realise I have been a bit naive buying 'sight unseen' but as I say it was on a whim - I don't even have a use for the display in mind at the moment. I'm usually the first person to say if something looks too good to be true it probably is, but I hope I haven't bought a complete waste of aluminium!
Be gentle with me - I hope someone can reassure me it can be repaired.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

Yes unfortunately the cable to the display is not detachable, It would be very convenient but would also make for a very complex connector to accommodate DVI, USB, FIreWire and Power all at once !!
I'm sure your actual display is ok... provided that cheap sounding power transformer hasn't fried it.
The cables of a new cinema display look like this:
    http://images.apple.com/displays/images/designsidebarcable20060721.png
from left to right: DVI, USB, FIreWire and Power on the far right.
The Power connector is Apple's proprietary connection and plugs into the power transformer, which in turn plugs into the mains.
So yes you should have a plug for a power outlet... (DVI doesn't power it). The USB and FireWire connectors don't have to be plugged in ... they just connect to the display to act as a hub with the ports on the back of the display... all that is required is the DVI and for the DIsplay to be powered.
I wouldn't recommend using whatever power transformer they have given you... if you can i would recommend trying to find an original power brick from apple... does the power cable still have the apple connector or have they stripped it to fit their adapter?
If the DVI connector looks that bad then you could get a new one and replace it yourself if your handy with the soldiering iron, just make sure you label the wires because theres a fair few. Or you might just want to open it up to check it's intact inside then seal it properly.

  • Really stupid that you can't drag and drop photos from Finder into Events

There is no way in iPhoto to do what I want and need to to, to wit, drag and drop photos from the Finder into existing iPhoto Events.
It really doesn't make sense that you can't do this. First of all, calling these groups Events to begin with is not smart; in my case, a group of photos in a folder on the Finder is rarely all from one photo session or so-called "event"--- instead of Events they should just be called Groups or something, and you should be able to drop individual photos into them. I have thousands of family photos that were accumulated on my hard drives over the years, some scanned in from film negatives, slides, or prints, others from digital cameras, and when I have changed Macs and hard drives over the years, every time a folder of photos was moved from an old hard drive to a new one, or regrouped into various folders, the photos seem to have acquired new dates of origin, etc.
Anyway, what I mean is, if Events are all time based, then somebody like me who has thousands of photos with all sorts of dates of origin, mostly unrelated to the date that the photo was actually shot, is screwed. I have old photos with new dates of origin and other mismatches between photos and the dates when they were actually shot or scanned.
My gripe is, again, that when I find photos on my hard drives that belong in certain iPhoto Events that have already been created, I cannot just drag these photos from the Finder and drop them into the Events they belong in. Instead, the stupid program creates a new Event from each photo I try to drop into an existing Event. That means I have to chase these new photos all over the place inside of iPhoto, trying to figure out where each new photo (now called an "Event") has ended up, so that I can drag and merge it into the Event I wanted it to go into in the first place. A real pain in the neck. It simply takes too long to do this for each photo added.
What this means is that iPhoto is not going to be a practical way to organize for a person like me until Apple makes it possible to simply drop any photo from the Finder into an existing Event. There should be an option to allow that. I'm really surprised there is not one. <edited out by Hosts>
    Tom

Tom, iPhoto will not overwrite photos with the same name. I have plenty of photos with the same name in the same event. Each photo most likely has an internal handler that manages the photo, and not just the name of the file.
I agree with you that this is sub-optimal, and (IMO) I think what happened is iPhoto 6 had rolls, and they came up with a really cool interface for mousing over those rolls, and decided it was more consumer friendly (and because film is a thing of the past) to call them events, rather than rolls. I think it was worth a shot, but they just slightly missed.
Right now in iPhoto08, any serious organization is done in folders and albums. Personally, I think they need to combine the two concepts -- the great "mouse over" view of events with the organization abilities of folders and albums. I'd like an albums view where I can mouse over the albums. Actually, Aperture 2's interface for organization is more functional than iPhoto, so I am hoping some of that benefit creeps into the next iPhoto release.
What I do is: I use events for high level grouping (like Winter 2007) and I organize folders and albums to break that down further ("trip to Montreal" "Christmas" etc.). But I do it backwards. I fill albums first, then I organize events.
When I drag in pictures to iPhoto, first I make the target album in iPhoto that I want to populate, then I drag the photo directly to that album (not to events). iPhoto automatically puts the photo into the album I created and also into a new event. Later, I go into events, right-click on this new event to "open event in separate window" then I move around the events view, to drop in the pictures from the "import" event I just created. If I move all the pictures into other events, iPhoto automatically deletes the event I just emptied. You could skip the event organization all together if you wanted to, but you'd lose the cool mouse-over feature, which can be handy.
One nice thing about having events AND albums is you can have the photo just once in iPhoto, in an event, but then have the photo appear in as many albums as you want (as well as projects and web galleries) all while only having one photo on your hard drive. So, there are benefits to events, but I think iPhoto is missing just a couple little bits of organizational ability to make it perfect. (and yes, I've submitted this all to Apple as feature requests)
Just in case you don't know -- events don't have any hierarchy. That is, you can't nest events. But you can have folders with subfolders, and any folder can contain albums. Albums cannot have sub-albums, and folders don't hold photos. Only albums hold photos, and folders (or sub-folders) hold albums. Try create some folders and albums and you'll get the hang of it. One other issue that Apple needs to address. When you create a new folder or album, it doesn't put it right where you want it, but rather puts it at the bottom of the list, so you have to drag it up to where you want it. Try it out, and you'll see what I mean, then submit it as a feature request to improve that.
I agree it's not perfect, but it's not too bad once you get used to it. And the benefits of working with the rest of the features of iPhoto is worth it. I'm just really hoping they do a few tweaks on the next release. They are near greatness here. They could just use a little nudge on the last bits. (in my opinion of course. Others may disagree, but I've talked to enough people who have the same issues you are having to know we are not alone on this).

  • Really stupid, but need help

Ok so I'm just starting to use Soundtrack Pro. I'm trying to get the ambient noise set and all that stuff. My problem is that when I have an audio clip selected and go up to Process, It has all of the things to do blocked out. I can only use the Effects tab at the top of the Pulldown menu. I bet its just some stupid thing, but I'd really like some help, thanks.

If you double-click on the audio file, it'll open in the Waveform Editor and you'll be able to select items from the Process menu.

  • A really stupid question from newbie...

    hello all,
i am very new to java and i am trying to build a j2ee application...
rite now....i need to let my app communicate w/ an outside program thru' XML..
i had just learnt many thing about java w/ xml and i decided to use the XMLEncoder... it seems quite simple to use...BUT i have no idea on how to send/receive these XML files...i had thought of using socket connection, but i just found out that an EJB wouldn't allow socket networking... i bet this must be quite a stupid question coz i found nowhere teaching me this...=P
if u know about this, pls point me to some relevant docs / sites....i am anxious to learn about it...
    thx so much,
    karloogunna~

    hello maesj, rune, and others,
    thx alot for your advice...
and here's the environment i am working in:
    OS: w2k
    JDK: 1.4.1.01
    j2ee: 1.3.1
    jboss: 3.0.2
i am using flash as my UI, so i need communication
between the j2ee app and flash.
the data transfer involves a number of arrays of
objects (each object w/ a list of attributes...) so, i
think using XML as data-exchange is quite suitable (am
i wrong on this??)I don't know the first thing about Flash, but using XML as a means for exchanging data seams like a good idea, for the scenario you described.
    >
and i am reading about the message-driven beans, i see
that they got a function onMessage() from where i can
get the XML strings (?), but i don't know how i can
feed these strings into this JMS from flash...do i
need to write a small java program on the client
side?I haven't that much experience with Message Driven Beans. What I do know is that they employ the Java Messaging Service (JMS). If you write a small client appplication with JMS support... you might be close.
    >
also, i am not sure if i can send out XML strings
through the message-driven beans, i am reading on the
    JMS...it got the MessageProducer, MessageConsumer,
    MessageListener, and MessageSelector....should i be
using this? or can i use this together with the
    message-driven beans??
In a Messaging system you will need message producers, and message consumers. To enable two-way communication, you can setup both the EJB and the client to handle both. When a message arrives at the consumer (or subscriber if you like), the JMS Service invokes the onMessage method. So you should implement your logic in the onMessage method, for example inspect the XML content, and act upon its content.
i am very sorry for my disorganized questions...(i
used to do low-level programming =P)
and really thank you for your advice!!!!
No problem, the amount of information to read can be quite overwhelming. Using JMS is just a suggestion, and might be considered overkill for your application. If you're using an IDE, like Sun ONE, creating a message driven bean is easy, and can be tried out, without too much hours passing.
    Kind Regards,
    Rune Bjrnstad.
