I have a Rebel T3i zoom for action shots??

I received this camera last year for Christmas. I wanted it to take action shots of my son playing soccer and my daughter horseback riding. It has the lense it came with and I'm wondering if I need to upgrade my lense to get great pictures. I can't seem to zoom in when it's set to action mode is that normal? I'm VERY new to photography. I've read through the users manual but not getting anywhere fast. If it's the lense then which lense would be sufficient for what I would like to do?

We can't tell you much without knowing what lens you've been using but if you want to shoot day time sports there are a few zooms which can do a good to great job but night sports is a very different thing. Be prepared to dig deep if you're really serious but if you can live with good vs great image quality (No matter which way you go there is a learning curve so allow some time to perfect your technique). On the lower end I'd recommend researching the Tamron 70-300 VC & Canon 70-300 IS. A better lens but also shorter reach wise is the Canon 70-200 f4 L or better yet (& more $) is the 70-200 f4 L IS and even more expensive are the 70-300 L IS & 100-400 L IS but it may be a bit long at the wide end for the soccer.

  • I have a Rebel T3i and I can't set ISO to 100

I get a reading that says can't get ISO 100 because Highlight Tone Priority is enabled - Auto D+.  The only way I can access Highlight Tone Priority is with video setting, I change to disable, hit set then go back to ISO but it still gives me the same error message.  What else can I do?

I just answered my own question.  Page 79 of the manual, go into gear wrench 3, C.Fn, select 6 and 0 for disable.  Now I have ISO 100.

  • Possible to have a custom ruler zoom for templates?

    Hello,
In the prefernces there are some values I can set as default ruler zoom. 150% gives a little bit too small fonts and 200% a bit too large. 175% would be perfect.
    Is it possible?
    Fred

    Fred,
You may find that for occasional necessary changes in zoom it is more convenient to use the keyboard shortcuts than the other zoom controls. The Pages zoom shortcuts are: Command-Shift-> and Command-Shift-<.
Another handy zoom control, only for very temporary use, is the Accessibility one; Control-ScrollUp, and it's partner Control-ScrollDn to return to normal screen.

  • Rebel t3i settings for outdoor family pics

I would like to take some outdoor pictures of family. Having trouble trying to figure out settings on my t3i

    I have two answers...
A short answer is ... put the camera into Tv mode, dial it to f/4, and use a long-ish focal length (avoid wide-angle) and keep the background at some distance behind your subjects. Light shade really helps.
And now for the longer answer...
Before the days when light meters were built into cameras, if you didn't happen to own a hand-held light meter, you had to memorize some common exposures. The "Sunny 16" exposure is a rule/guideline designed to work when shooting outdoors in mid-day full sun.
It says that if you set the f-stop (aperture) to f/16, then the shutter speed should be set to the inverse of the ISO speed. In other words if you use the base ISO of 100 on the camera, then you'd set the shutter speed to 1/100th. At ISO 400... you'd set the shutter speed to 1/400th. You get the idea.
However... full "mid day" outdoor sun is miserable if you want good looking images. The bright sun creates rather extreme shadows. If I have to shoot outdoors, I always use flash. I set the flash exposure compensation to "-1" when causes the flash to behave as "fill" light. That means I want the flash to fire at about half the power needed to take over and be the primary light source. This means the sun will still be the primary light source... but the flash will fill in the shadows so they are about half as dark as they would otherwise have been and you get images that look a bit nicer.
This assumes you have an external flash ... fairly powerful. E.g. a Canon Speedlite 430EX II, a 580EX II, or a 600EX-RT. The built-in pop-up flash will not be nearly strong enough unless your subject is only about 5' away.
SO.... the alternative is to get those subjects out of the bright sun. If you can shoot them in "light shade" then you'd open up the aperture by 1 stop (e.g. f/11 instead of f/16). Try to avoid dappled light (which doesn't look very appealing). Medium shadow is 2 stops (f/8), and very dense shadows is about 3 stops. This also works for clouds. If it's a partly cloudy day, you get a better looking shot when there's a cloud blocking the full power of the sun than you get when you have open sky.
If you want blurred backgrounds (always nice for portraits) then you'll want to drop the aperture down to around f/4 or f/2.8 (I prefer f/4 most of the time on my full frame camera... on a crop frame I might go a bit lower). That means you need to drop 4-5 stops. You could do that by increasing the shutter speed IF you aren't using any flash (if you are using flash then it gets tricky to shoot faster than the flash-sync speed of the camera... most Canon DSLRs have a flash sync speed of around 1/200th... some are 1/160th... some are 1/250th.) The flash has to go into "high speed sync" mode for this (and have enough power). So a bit of light shade makes this much easier because you don't necessarily need flash at all.
HOWEVER... if you're in light shade... make sure you don't have a bright background (if you're in the shade of a tree but the camera sees a background which is in full sun then you'll get an over-exposed background when your subjects are correctly exposed and that's no good... you'd need flash to fix that.)

  • Recommendation for correct wide angle lens and flash for real estate photos for Canon Rebel T3i?

Hi I'm new to the forum. I always hire out a professional photog for my real estate photos however have thought that with the amount that I pay them, I could buy my own wide angle lens to do on my own.
Any recommendations for what wide angle lens and flash to buy?
Here are some examples of the work they have done in the past for me:
Any advice would be much appreciated. I enjoy amateur photography with my family and portraits but am hoping to be able to do more of my own work on my listings. Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Your samples look like incredibility simple images to do. I also suspect little artificial light was added. Possibly just a bounce off the ceiling.
Since you already have a Rebel T3i, I would get the Canon 430 EX, and just one. But be aware it will likely not provide equal coverage for a 10-22mm lens. Ten millimeters is pretty wide even on a T3i. Bouncing off the ceiling will help this.
Some ceilings may not be good for bounce either.
Give it a go and you will learn what works and what not. But the old saying, KISS, applies.  You will learn!
Photshop and/or Lightroom are great additions. They both have learning curves and PS a very long learning curve.

  • Are my cannon zoom lenses compatible to the new Cannon EOS Rebel T3i

We are thinking about buying a cannon EOS Rebel T3I and need to know if the lenses we had from our cannon EOS Rebel 2000 will work on it of do we need to purchase newer zoom lenses.  We have a Cannon Zoom Lens EF 75-30mm 1:4-5.6 and a Cannon Zoom Lens EF 35-70mm 1:3.5-45 A. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, your old lenses will work with a Rebel T3i. They were designed for a 35mm film camera, and since the Rebel T3i has a sensor that is smaller than a frame of 35mm film, the effective focal length of the lenses will increase by a factor of 1.6. So, for example, your 35-70mm lens will have effective focal lengths of 56-112 mm.

When I try to open the EOS digital solution disk ver 24.1 for my new Canon Rebel T3i camera on my Mac 10.5.8 a notice "this software is not supported by the CPU you are using" comes up
You need to contact Canon - or read the software specs - it sounds like the software you got form them is not supported by your computer
    Do I need this software?
Probably not - exactly what about it do you want?
Can I just download the pictures to my Mac without using the Canon software?
Probably - if you are shooting JPEG - launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto preferences set action when a camera is connected to launch iPhoto and connect your camera - iPhoto should launch and you should be able to import
Some cameras need to be set to mass storage mode - read your camera manual for details and procedures
If you are using RAW then your camera needs to be on this list and you need the versions of software noted - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 - for older OS versions you can use google to find the list of supported cameras

    Hello
I don't know who to complain to as you do not appear to have a complaints department, despite searching the web, I trust you can pass this to relevant department for action, as I'm very angry over my recent repair.
Following my issue relating to a blank screen 2 weeks ago, your advisor arranged for my iMac to collected by Amsys, for repair and return, this was done and it was returned to me last Tuesday, onWednesday I set up my iMac again and instantly realised I had problems, much worse than before. I called Amsys to inform them of the issue of the computer being very very slow and unable to open iPhoto and pages, and document listing would not show up, plus I had no sound on the mac. They informed me that they had only replaced the video card and what they had done would have not affected the computers performance. He suggested I reinstall OSX again which I did, but this made no difference to the programs, so I called you.
Your technician on the phone was very good as they have always been, and made an appointment for me to go into the Milton Keynes Apple store the next day at 1 pm, which I did.
The gentleman on the Genius Bar was very good and was able to run tests on the iMac in my presence, and diagnosed immediately an issue with the sound problem, and advised me that this could not be fixed while I wait and I would need to leave it for repair. I made him aware of the previous repair, and he was able to see via your system, the list of logged issues I have had with this since purchasing in September 2012. I'm sure you can see from the way you record all calls and issues the problems I have had.
Today I called to ask if my iMac would soon be ready for collection, I was told the repairs had been completed and it was being tested. However to my dismay, I learned of another serious issue relating to the repair carried out by Amsys. I was informed that 6 screws were missing from the the iMac internally, which caused me much distress and concern, they also told me I had to wait even longer as the screws had to be ordered and installed on arrival before I could collect it.
My issues here are: I trusted the Amsys repairer as it was arranged and recommend by you, it is very evident they are not competent to repair, as they have caused more problems with my iMac on its return, despite enclosing a checklist, fully ticked showing everything working well, it clearly wasn't ! Plus the issue of missing parts (screws) during the repair, I have already expressed my disgust with Amsys, by email and had a response, within the hour, apologising and told me they were looking into this.
This where I stand on this, I have not had my iMac for  almost two weeks and I do not know when I will get it back. I'm also very worried about what other damage has been caused by Amsys and the quality of my iMac now. I want to know what you, Apple is going to do about this ? I have already been very inconvenienced by this and until now I have been a very loyal apple customer with 2 iPads, and 4 iPhones in our household, not to mention the iMac.
I feel I have been very let down by this experience, on my iMac, which cost a lot of money, I have also lost a lot of money with lost work and unable to carry out my business without it, and I will be seeking compensation.
I trust you will take this complaint seriously and pass it to the relevant department for action.
    Yours sincerely
    Des Withey

  • Google maps don't display right, part is good but about half of it says "we are sorry, but we don't have maps at this zoom level for this region." Zooming out doesn't help.

When displaying a Google map I get about four vertical strips that alternately display good and in gray bands. The gray area displays the message "we are sorry, but we don't have maps at this zoom level for this region." Zooming out doesn't get rid of the gray areas.
I've had this problem for over a year and get around it by using either MS Internet Explorer or Google Chrome which work Ok. Otherwise Firefox works fine and I use it for everything else except Google Maps.
I've tried an uninstall of FireFox and then reinstall but it didn't help. I don't remember what I was doing when this problem first showed up.

    You're welcome

  • I have created a newsletter in indesign cs4 how can I set zooms for each article for the user

I have created a e-newsletter in Indesign. I have successfuly saved it as a SWF then as a PDF from acrobat.
The problem is that when the user zooms in the resolution is not good.
How can I let the user zoom in to read each article. Would I create buttons with zoom settings for each article. If this is the case do I do it in Indesign or Flash and can I still save it as a PDF file and it will keep the interactivity?
I would greatly appreciate any help with this issue. It is driving me mad trying to get the information I need.
