My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it. I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up. Can anyone help?
If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless. -
Question mark over the Mail icon
What can I do if there is a question mark over the mail icon in dock... I can't open the Mail now. Thanks!
you can reinstall Mail using the leopard install DVD. insert the DVD and open it in finder. among other things you should see a folder called "optional installs". Open it and double-click on Optional Installs.mpkg. Follow the instructions. at the appropriate page you'll have to check the box for "Mail" on the list of software you want to install.
This will install Mail 3.0. To update it to the latest version of mail reinstall

"Missing Files" Red Question Marks, can't delete Crashes
HELP!
I recently had some external drive issues, so once I got every thing copied back over and relinked, the Managed Referenced Files Section still shows some missing images and I I make a Smart album and sort it by Missing files, they show up as RED Question Marks. If I I try to delete them, Aperture Crashes and gives the following report:

Another good thing to do from time to time is to boot from your install CD, then choose "Disk Utility", then do a check (and repair, if necessary) of your boot disk.
You can't verify or fix a disk you've started from, thus the need to boot from a CD. You can boot from a second hard disk to do this test if it has MacOS on it. -
Restored Library from vault- all previews now red question marks
I just restored my library of referenced images from my vault, and all of my image thumbnails are now showing up as red question marks in Aperture.
Is this normal? Will I need to let Aperture reconnect to my image storage drive and re-render previews
How do i get rid of the red question marks? You'll have to reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Then install iPhoto, run the latest updater and try again.

iphoto has a question mark over it on my tool bar and I can't open it. What should I do?
No, I can't see, to see it. It was working ok a week ago. Do you think I could have accidentally have deleted it from the applications folder?

Question mark over Quicktime logo on some trailers
Hello there
Some time ago i have an issue with QT 7.0.4. The issue was about a conflict with java when i try to run java app, so someone on this foro reply me to downgrade to 7.0.3 and give me a link to an installer to do that.
The installer working great and the java app too, but when i try to see the movie trailers, some of them appear with a question mark over the QT logo and can't see the trailers.
Right now i have 7.0.3 because i don't want the issue back.
Anyone may suggest something, please ???Ok, here some of the trailers:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/poseidon/trailer2/small.html
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/anamericanhaunting/trailer/
http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/lamujerdemihermano/small.html
http://www.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/onelastthing/trailer/
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/thesentinel/trailer_small.html
http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony/lenfant/trailer/
But i want to give credits to QT, because only some of trailers (like all this) have the problem, not all of them. -
I'm getting a question mark over my systems preferences icon
hello all,
I'm getting a question mark over my systems preferences icon and now I can't open it or my time capsule icon. I uninstalled a program and after that I started to experience this problem. Any idea what is going on and how I can solve the problem.
Thanks in advance
ACinLACheck inside your Applications folder and see if you can find your System Preferences Application. If you can see there try and open it. If it works then drag it to the dock creating a new alias and remove the question mark. If you do not see System Preferences in the Applications folder then it may have been moved or even deleted. Try searching for it. If you find it move it back to the Applications folder.

Question Mark over the iChat application in dock
hi,
I go to start my iChat application in my dock... but there is a question mark over it and it doesnt work when i click on it. what should i do? apple seems not to having anything to help me.You deleting the icon from the dock does not delete the application from the applications folder. The question mark is there because the association between the dock icon and the actual application is broken (application missing, moved, etc.).
You don't have a Mac OS 10 installer disk? You should have gotten one when you bought the computer. Assuming that you do, there is an "optional installer" package. In Tiger, iChat was one of the applications that you could reinstall from the optional installer package on the Tiger installer DVD. I don't know off the top of my head if that is the case anymore for Leopard or not. I can't find an apple knowledge base article that talks about this for Leopard, but there is one for Tiger at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1442. If Apple still lets you reinstall iChat from the optional installer package on the Leopard operating system DVD, the procedure should be very similar. -
Question mark over Quicktime logo in Safari - MacBook
Hi,
I have a black macbook on which FCP studio is installed and therefore QT Pro.
While browsing in Safari, (Latest 10.4.7 and Safari updates) and trying to access a link which plays streaming Qt's or just plain ones, I receive a Question mark over the Quicktime logo in place of the movie.
When right clicking the link and saving target, it downloads the movie and opens it in quicktime ok.
What the **** is going on.
On my G5 no problems to access these exact same links...
Pretty annoying I would say
ThanX
Jean michelYeah, this is very common right now. Problem is not with Quicktime, but with the Shockwave plug-in in Safari. it is not yet native to intel-based Macs so it will not activate properly as is.
Unfortunately, there is nothing yet to update to, so you can either live with it as is or run Safari in Rosetta mode which will slow it down slightly, but give you all the web content properly.
Try this:
Quit Safari
Go to the Safari icon in Applications
Ctrl-click the icon
Go to "Get Info"
Click the box next to "Open using Rosetta"
Open Safari
This will solve the problem until an Intel-compliant Shockwave plug-in comes out. -
Question Mark over system Preferences on Doc....
Hi, well I haven't had my mac long, and today I have a question mark over my system pref icon, and cannot access it. I can't even find it in the apps folder..?
Does anybody know how to fix this please?
I have looked and some people suggest a reinstall of OS, which is fine but I have no back ups yet as I haven't had it long and don't even know how to back it up! (Ex PC user...) would I lose all my photos etc in aperture...?
many thanks in advanceThe question mark means it cannot find System Preferences, which apparently, you can't either.
Have you looked in the Trash to see if you may have accidentally moved it there?
There is also a program called Pacifist which will allow you to get individual items out of the installation disks.
Finally, an Archive and Install with the option to Preserve User and Network settings will save all of your data. However, I wouldn't trust anything. If your photos are important, burn them to a DVD and then do the archive and install. -
Question mark over certain applications
Hello, today I realized that my iMac was acting strange when I clicked on a few applications that I have on the dock and instead of them opening they simply had a question mark hover over the. These applications are DVD player, photo booth, mail, and a few others. I believe this may be that someone, I suspect my cousin, deleted them accidentally. Is there a way of recovering these basic applications?
Thank you.question mark over an item in the dock means that the original item can not be found because it was either moved or deleted. first check you main Applications folder. that's where those things should be by default. if they are not there they may have been moved, do a spotlight search for them. try it from all user accounts you have on the mac as sometimes people move the apps to the desktop or a place like that. also check the Trash on all accounts. if the apps are nowhere to be found you can reinstall them from the leopard install DVD using pacifist
http://www.charlessoft.com/
you'll have to install 10.5.7 combo update afterwards to bring those apps to their latest versions. -
Why is there a question mark over a printer icon on my dock?
I have just installed a new printer on my computer. I also have another printer installed along with this one. I put this new printer's icon on my dock. Now my old printer icon is showing a question mark over it. I set my new printer to be the default printer. Didn't know if that was the problem, so reset the default printer to be my old printer, but icon stayed. Reset new printer to default and then turned on the old printer. Question mark still there. Set old printer to default and tuned on the old printer. Set old printer to scan to see if setting it up to use it would do something. Question mark still there. I am stumped. Anyone know why this is happening? It just bugs me that it won't go away.
Noticed in the print summary that the printer icon had a pause symbol over it even though there was no print job listed that could be deleted. Then got brilliant idea - took icon off of dock and dragged a new icon to dock - voila!! question mark gone!! Crazy. Anyway thanks for your thoughts as it led me to try this.

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
thanks for your helpIt means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
button.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.
