I have a refurbished iPad (first one) I can't update anything because original owner's apple I'd and password still pops up. How do I change this?

I have tried updating, I can't get the original owners Apple I'd off and replace mine. How can I change mine to be the main?

Are there still apps installed by the original owner on the device?  if so, each time an app update is initiated, it will prompt you for the password for the iTunes ID associated with the installed app.  You will need to delete any apps associated with the previous owner's id and re-install them.
