  • Time Machine cannot back up my Mac.

Time Machine cannot back up my Mac.  Error reads:  "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.  This was the 2nd time I tried today. The first time it said something about 'hidden files.' I haven't had trouble before.

Restart the Time Capsule. Launch AirPort Utility and check for a firmware update.

  • Time Machine Cannot Back up My Applications

Dear Friends. My time machine cannot back up my applications and library although I do not put them in the lists of excluded files. I have macbook pro with retina display and I use Western Digital for my time machine. Please, help!

Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your Time Machine settings, and test.

  • Formatting an external hard drive for Mac/Time Machine.

    Hello-
Just purchased a Time Capsule to use both as a wireless Network and backup hard drive. Both are working great. However, I have an external hd (500 gig "My Book") I used with a previous computer (PC). I would like Time Capsule/Time Machine to backup everything on the My Book external hd but I realize I need to reformat in order to have the Time Machine backup this drive. It appears that the only way to reformat the external hd is to erase it's contents. This isn't an option for me as this drive is almost full and has a ton of data I do not want to lose. Can anyone elaborate on how I can reformat this disk so it will be compatible with my new setup without losing any of it's contents? Thank you for your time and help.
    Matt

Some 3rd-party apps, such as iPartition, claim to be able to do that. But they +*very prominently+* warn you to back up first, in case something goes wrong. And there have been a few posts here where something did go wrong and the user hadn't backed-up, so lost everything.
iPartition (and I think all the others) cost money, of course. Instead of spending it there, your best bet is to get another external HD, a larger one. Copy the data to it, reformat the WD, and copy it back. Make sure Time Machine is backing-it up to your Time Capsule (ie., not listed in the exclusions box of +Time Machine Preferences > Options).+
Then erase and partition the new one. One partition should be at least as large as your Mac's internal HD, the other 500 GB or more. Use this drive for "secondary" backups of both, via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. [CarbonCopyCloner|http://www.bombich.com> is donationware; [SuperDuper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html] has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling.
You might even want to get a portable HD for this, so you can take it off-site and also be protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike on your power lines, etc.

  • Time machine cannot back up VM fusion

I recently restored my computer using the OS 10.5 DVD and time machine and find out that Windows Vista in VM fusion was not there after restoration.
What I found in this forum is that you need to manually exclude VM fusion in Time machine backup, but in my case, I want the time machine to at least back up my VM fusion once, and there is only "exclude" in the time machine preference. How can I do?

Have you searched out VMware Fusion Community for "Fusion + Time Machine" - there are problems and issues (I was going to avoid Leopard, or Fusion 1.1, or stay with native Windows Vista until the dust settles).
    If that link doesn't work...

  • Time Machine cannot back up to WD MyBookLive on network with ML

Having upgraded to ML from SL 10.6.8 TimeMachine no longer recognises the network back up disk - a WD Mybooklive on a local ethernet connection as a back up option - reports ' network back up disk does not support the required AFP' What has changed as this worked fine with SL - what needs to be done to allow  Time machine to see this disk in the right format

    Hi,
I have the WD 3G MyBookLive.  I can see the drive and use it as a public share.  The Time Machine software sees the drive.  However, it hangs connecting to it.
I am not sure if I was supposed to create or delete any shares?  Then the twonky is still enabled?
Am  using Mavericks.  Brand new Mac Pro.  The WD has the firmware updated to what the WD site says will work.
    Any thoughts.
I have a Time Capsule.. However, the disk is full all the time.  So since I had the WD I thought I would try doing backups to this.

  • Time Machine cannot back up to G-Drive slim which is connected, but does not appear in Finder.

    my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) using OS X  Yosemite10.10.2 has properly connected G-drive Slim, but it does not appear in Finder;
    On Screen pop up Warnings:
"Back up Failed  Time Machine couldn't back up to "G-Drive Slim" " and
"Disk Not Ejected Properly  Eject "G-Drive Slim" before turning it off."

Does the drive show in Disk Utility? Try a restart.

  • Time machine cannot back up

Tiime Machine reports cannot back-up due to error creating file

    Wonderfully informative message, isn't it?
Most likely, there's a file on your internal HD that TM is having trouble with. See #C3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Making Time Machine scan/back up a separate NAS

I'm slowly loosing the will to live in achieving what I believe should be achievable! Would really appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.
Like most people I'm paranoid about loosing my extensive picture and home movie library and I'm not yet comfortable with cloud solutions given the weeks and months it takes to upload it, let alone recover it.  So my preferred solution is a NAS system hidden and locked in a modified fire proof box attached to a powerline network adaptor in my home.  We've been using powerline adaptors for a while and the data rate is pretty good.
I have 2 x MacBook Air and the wife and I share our iPhoto and iTunes library's which are stored on a separate NAS (i use a TC to look after these) and accessed via Ethernet (they can be accessed wirelessly, but the fragility of iPhoto means we use only cabled connection when playing with pics)
In short my MBA's are nothing more than "interface" machines with all our content stored on 2 NAS and Dropbox.
Now here is my challenge, I obviously want to back up primarily my iPhoto and iTunes folders to my secure NAS, tucked away nice and cosy in its fireproof box.  But for the love of sweet Jesus I can't seem to get Time Machine to see it (the NAS (TC) holding iPhoto & iTunes) in order to back it up to my fireproof NAS which is also a 3TB TC.
Everytine I go onto TM it asks me to select the back up disk, I select my fireproof TC and it begins happily backing up my MBA, which while handy, really isn't that critical to me, given I'm using it only as an interface device to use and consume content rather than store.
I'm sure I'm not doing something and I've been all over google and various forums but I just got lost in messages about using TM to back up to a NAS.
In short, I need TM to scan TC 1 (iTunes & iPhoto libraries) and back it up to TC 2 (nuclear proof back up NAS).
    I'm running a July 2012 MBA with Lion 10.8.
Any help or advice would be really very much appreciated.
    Many thanks

But for the love of sweet Jesus I can't seem to get Time Machine to see it (the NAS (TC)
Unfortunately, Time Machine cannot back up a network drive.  The drive must be connected directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire.
Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper should be able to backup a network drive. Suggest that you confirm with their support folks about what you want to do.

  • Why time machine stopped backing up my application folder?

Help! About a month ago time machine stopped backing up the application, library, private and system folders and only back up the users folder. what happened? I cant seem to make machine back up everything anymore.

Since a few days I have exactly the same problem.
"Time Machine stopped backing up the application, library, private and system folders and only back up the users folder."
I did all the checks without success. Thereafter I deleted the backup disk and started a new copy on a new formatted disk.
    Same result.

  • Hi, I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?

I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  And also followed all the steps - "secured disk access: with a disk passord", "Airport disk guest access: read and write", "Share disks over WAN". But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?  Also, its connected via a powered usb hub.

I assume that you are using  Mac operating system 10.4.11, as your profile indicates.
The instructions that you referenced are for use with AirPort Utility....not AirPort Admin Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Mac , which will run on 10.4.11.
Also noticed that the instructions do not tell you that the hard drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme, but they should.

  • Use external drive for both Time Machine and storage for Back to My Mac

    Hi all,
I have been "a Mac" now for over a year and just keep finding cool new things that make me happy I switched. The latest thing is Back to My Mac offered with my Mobile Me account. With a rather convoluted mix of PC/Mac/iOS devices to manage - best $99 I ever spent btw...
I also have a 1TB Time Capsule that I have been using with Time Machine to back up all four of my Mac computers at home. Needless to say, the 1TB is really struggling to handle the amount of data being backed up and certainly leaves no room for anything else.
What I wanted to do was to attach a larger external hard drive via a powered hub to the USB port on the Time Capsule and use it for Time Machine backups while using the internal 1TB drive with Back to My Mac so that I can have remote access to all my data from anywhere without having to leave my computer running at home all the time in order for my laptop to "see" it when I'm away. And, yes, the amount of that data far exceeds what any level of Mobile Me subscription can offer! I should also mention that the hard drive is the only USB device connected through the hub to the Time Capsule at the moment. There are no other devices that might be "getting in the way".
I'm thinking maybe all this is asking too much without the addition of a dedicated file server (Mac Mini, perhaps - not a purchase my budget wants to make).
I understand that the Time Capsule doesn't support partitions, so I bought a Western Digital 2TB Elements drive, connected it to my Macbook Pro and used Disk Utility to reformat the drive from the incompatible NTFS it shipped in to a single, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. I then made two folders on the drive, one for Time Machine backups and one for Back to My Mac remote storage/access. Great.
However, when I connected the 2TB drive to my Time Capsule I could not see it at all. Time Capsule was reporting problems in the way of a disk error. From within my Airport Utility, I could see the trouble was the external drive. The utility suggested connecting the drive to a Mac and using it's Disk Utility to troubleshoot.
I followed through, checking the disk, etc. and ended up reformatted the drive on my Macbook Pro yet again with the same specifications as before but without the folders and reconnected it to the Time Capsule. Same deal. But now, I can't even remotely connect to the Time Capsule at all. I can see the Time Capsule in the shared area of my Macbook's Finder but can not connect. The connection tries and fails even before it gets to asking me for username and password credentials.
Long story short, first of all, I suppose I would like to know if I'm asking for the impossible?
Second, if what I want to do *is* possible, what steps do I need to take to make it so?
Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions you might have.

Well, I have now reformatted/partitioned my poor WD Elements 2TB drive about a dozen times as well as restarted my 1TB Time Capsule so many times it's no wonder it's as confused as I am! <G>
Last night, at your suggestion, William, and in respect for your continued support, I tried creating two 1TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitions on the WD external USB drive, both with GUID partition tables. Both volumes mounted to my laptop's desktop flawlessly and without issue.
Once the external drive was connected to the Time Capsule, however, it was a crap shoot as to whether or not the drive was recognized at all, reporting a problem with the disk, or, even at one point, mounting one of the two volumes but not both. <sigh>
I read somewhere on the Internet that you need to restart the Time Capsule for volumes on an external USB drive to be recognized.
So I tried that. I connected the freshly partitioned/formatted disk to the Time Capsule and restarted it. This succeed in removing the issue of reporting a nameless drive with a capacity of 0MB. It then reported the drive with its correct name but would not recognize whatever volumes in whatever partitions that particular crack at it contained with the exception of the once, as I mentioned above, when only one of two volumes mounted correctly and was listed with the right name and capacity on the Time Capusule's Setup's Disk tab.
At this point I have given up on my goal to use the external drive with Time Machine to back up my Macs or to hope I will ever be able to see its contents remotely via Back to My Mac. All I would like to do now is simply find a reason why I can't get it successfully connected and playing nice with my Time Capsule in the first place!
Any further suggestions or advice as to what steps I might take next would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you all.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • I have a MS Office for Mac CD, how do I install the software onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Display)?

I have a MS Office for Mac CD, how do I install the software onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Display)? It does not have a CD drive.

If all else fails, try this.  i used to do it all the time before. might or might not work with the new office.
if you have access to another computer with a cd/dvd rom, copy the entire contents of the cd on a thumb drive.
insert the thumb drive in your MB and do the install from there.
However, if you have the newer version of MS Office, Bandit's suggestion is much better.
