Thanks for the reply, not the answer I was hoping for, one last thing if I can get the music onto a computer can I then add it to the iTunes library.

They will be gone from the iphone, but you should be syning all contacts to your computer regularly and should be importing all pics to your computer regularly, particularly before any update.
Have you failed to do this?

My old laptop crashed. I bought a new one, but when I loaded itunes and plugged in my ipad 2, it only added the songs that were purchased in the itunes store. Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

If you can not access the old hard drive and you have not made backups of your bookmarks, you will not be able to recover the bookmarks.

iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, and iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.

Yes he would need his own apple id for imessage/facetime and icloud.
In the meantime on his device go to settings - message - send&receive - remove the shared apple id.

Ipod repaired, HD crash - How can I get my music back

My Ipod touch was sent in for repair a couple weeks ago - it just stopped turning on. They sent me a new one but it doesn't have any of my apps or music on it. While it was out for repair, my hard drive crashed. Father in law is still working on recovery, but if he cannot recover my music, am I out of luck? Doesn't Itunes keep a record of what you purchase? Do I really have to purchase it all over again?

Did you back up your purchases before you you reinstalled your system? If you erased your drive then the purchases will have been erased along with everything else. If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:

Are these tracks that are on your old iPod still in your iTunes library? If so, just configure them to sync to your iPod Touch.
Otherwise you'll need to copy everything from the old iPod to your PC and into iTunes first. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

Updated to ios 5.0.1 but the icloud doesnt recognise that I bought any music on my ipod touch before I updated, how can I get this music back?

So, pretty much, I hadnt updated my ipod for quite sometime...and it wouldnt let me take music from my ipod onto my computer (now running the latest itunes) When I finally decided to update everything, the information about icloud said that it could download previously purchased music etc. So, I figured it would all be fine, as I assumed all my music, as Ive always used the same account, would overall be saved onto that in someway or another, and it could at least make it realise that Ive already downloaded things? so, I updated, my ipod was wiped except for photos, and now I cant get any of my previously purchased music, videos, or apps....however...I really care about the music most of all. I've read help sections millions of times...but I cant find any that acctually help me (none of the apple ones I have found have even mentioned the fact that theres NOTHING in the purchased bar) I tried downloading something else and that works fine on this new 'icloud' thing. Pretty much, I am acctually terrible with technology...and I probably should never assume things ever again...but if you have any idea what I could do to help me...that would be much appreciated!
