Microsoft never produced a Windows Media Plugin for Android. I doubt they every will as Windows Phone and Android are direct competitors.

The 2131 usually indicates firmware needs to be updated on a drive.
Head to your drivers and downloads page for your latitude at Dell, and check for updates to your firmware for your optical drives. If you're behind and you update, does that clear up the 2131?

I installed a plug-in for the gov time site. I now get the error message that I need to update my firefox to 3.0 or more recent version. I have the latest firefox version.

In the first table, there are two rows for Windows: one for the ActiveX control for IE, and one for the plugin for Firefox. You might want to grab both. And try the .msi files instead of the .exe files to see whether those work better.

It's odd that on a newly rebuilt system your More System Details shows that you have a user.js file, which is an optional settings files used to override your previous session settings. This is not part of the standard Firefox installation, so if you did not create that file yourself, you may want to investigate or delete it. Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?

Try using RecBoot or TinyUmbrella to kick it out of Recovery mode.

I reconnected the original powered hub that I thought probably caused the problem and this time it shut down the whole computer. When I rebooted everything now works perfectly. The system reset. I tried another powered hub and it didn't have the same effect so the old one is heading for the bin and with fingers crossed all systems are now working perfectly. Trying to reset PRAM or reset the SMC didn't work but causing the same power issue did. Thanks for your input though. It did get me to think what was the original cause.

IMHO the free apps are a band aid fix. If the OP uses Office on a regular basis he will need to upgrade anyway. Personally I have used neooffice and found it substandard however that was just my take. I haven't tried Google's solution.
We both forgot to mention the OP could also use Pages and Numbers to open their Word and Excel files. If he uses Entourage then Mail and iCal would be viable substitutes.

Google Chrome is a problem:
if you use Chrome's own PDF viewer, the results are unpredictable.
if you use the Adobe Reader plugin with Chrome, it may reject (block) it if it is not the latest version. Reader 11.0.08 is the latest version for Windows XP, but Chrome may insist on the current version 11.0.10.
My suggestion; use a different browser!

Click start in search type Recovery Manager then click on it select Yes on User access control then select I need immediate help then select Driver & application recovery select the Webcam driver and install it then restart the unit.
