I have an external dvd burner, is it compatible to install Tiger dvds from?

My dvd recorder is an external one and I have recorded dvd's from imovie using it but would it be compatible to install system software from?
Elaine

I actually just read an article in the magazine MacLife which tells you how to boot from an external USB drive in the event that your drive is not firewire. Apparently Apple added USB boot support shortly after the AGP graphics G4 and the G3 slot-loading iMac came out around 1999--so the support is there, it's just that individual types of drives may hide it from you.

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • My old iPad 2 is updated to ios 7.1.2 but I have a new 4 which is only compatible with 7.0.4 from setup. How can I backup my account to the new iPad with this incompatibility?

My old iPad 2 is updated to ios 7.1.2 but I have a new 4 which is only compatible with 7.0.4 from setup. How can I backup my account to the new iPad with this incompatibility?

What you need to do is temporarily set up your new 4. Just long enough to update the operating system. Then you can erase all content and settings - which puts it back to its out of box state, then set it up again, this time restoring it from the backup of your two.
So, using the same Apple ID on both - just to keep things easy - set up your 4. Just basically choose 'set up as new' to activate it, then immediately update the iOS to 7.1.2.
then erase all content and settings, which puts it back to 'llike new'...but the operating system will not reset, it'll remain 7.1.2
Then set it up again, this time choosing to 'restore from the backup' of your 2 and your 4 will be a near clone of your two.

  • I am a new Macbook Pro user (just the 13" baby).  I have an external DVD drive and would like to load onto my Mac and then onto my iPad - how do I do this?

I am a new MacBook Pro user - actually totally new to the Mac goodies and am having a bit of trouble sorting out how to get a DVD from my external DVD player onto the Mac and then onto my iPad (I travel a lot!).  I have been a windows user for many years and am still trying to learn all the bits and pieces.  I have VLC on this - don't have any trouble playing a DvD, just don't know how to do the rest i.e. rip it, change to an MP4 and get it onto my other device.  Please help!  You are more than likely to see many more "how do I do this" on here!

program called MDRP to rip it......  then use Wondershare to convert it, also Iskysoft video converter is an option.
You dont have to put it ON the Ipad, once on the Mac, you can Stream it wifi to the Ipad using the $2 program called VLC STREAMER (not VLC, but streamer made by VLC),.... best APP for your Ipad to stream videos from your MAC to your Ipad.

  • I have an external DVD/CD USB - Memorex.  Cannot get it to play or the software to run.

I just bought a iMac and I am trying to connect my Memorex USB DVD/CD and play movies and music.  Cannot get the iMac to respond to the software or play the CD or DVD??  What am I doing wrong.

Check the devices system specifications to see if the manufacturer claims it's compatible with OS X. If it's not then  you will need to replace it. However if it is then do a SMC reset 2-3 times back to back using the directions in:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Then retest, if it still doesn't work try another USB cable and retest.

  • Install Tiger OS from external FW DVD drive

Because my G4 must be rack-mounted, I have removed it's superdrive to an external FW enclosure. Though it is the original drive, I am unable to startup from it with my full retail Tiger OS 10.4.22 disk.
The disk mounts just fine; running the installer shows a restart button but after the restart, boots from the 10.3.9 system on the HD, with the DVD mounted on the desktop. If I manually designate the Tiger OS on DVD in startup disk, on restart, it reverts to the 10.3.9 system on the HD as well.
I have tried C, X, option keys, These methods don't even show the DVD volume as an option.
    What now?
    G4 DP 1.42GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2G RAM

    Thank you,
Though I have not yet solved the problem, you steered me in the right direction. My enclosure is no longer supported by Yamaha, the original manufacturer, so obviously it is suspect. I am currently waiting for a reply from OWC to see if their most up-to-date enclosures are Tiger boot-compatible before plunking down the cash. I have not been able to locate any database with this information online.
Patchburn reported my drive as ready to go, so I guess the boot issue is not addressed by it specifically.

  • I only have PP upgrade DVDs from Cs3 to Cs6, I need to reinstall in new machine, how do I do this without a cs6 disk

I Have been using PP since 1.5 I am now on CS6 but the last 3 updates have been on upgrade DVDs. I now need to delete and reinstall Premier. How can I do this without  a CS6 disk. I cannot reinstall CS3 and then do the upgrades individually as CS3 was for Win XP and I'm not sure it would work. Is there a dept in Adobe I can contact (no telephone numbers) to get a CS6 DVD. Thank you for any assistance.

Adobe has made this process much simpler in recent years.
No need to re-install any version earlier than the current version (CS6). All installers (upgrade or full) contain the full program code. The difference between full and upgrade is in the serial number.
All you need do is download (link below) and install CS6, enter the CS6 upgrade serial number then enter the CS5 serial number (even if that too is an upgrade).
    Download CS6 products

  • External dvd burner no longer works

    hello
recently upgraded from leopard to snow leopard. i have two macs in an audio studio where the computers, their hard drives, and some other gear is one room away from me in a machine room. this cuts down on noise for me in the control room of the studio.
i've used external dvd burners for the two studio macs. both have been working great. these burners have worked fine under both tiger and leopard. suddenly, after the snow leopard install, neither works. i have never installed any special drivers for these, the os has always properly handled them.
i have found that if i insert a disc, i can power the burner off and then back on and then the disc will mount. it will not mount just by inserting it per normal. also, cd burning software doesn't see this drive. it's not a choosable option in the menu.
this is a major pita. i don't think that there is anything else that i can do here. i'm hoping it's clear to apple that this is an area of concern. firewire devices ought to be able to plug in and work, and the os which has handled this so well in the past is not doing it right now.
i've tried some basic troubleshooting, like swapping firewire cables, but have realized via these forums than many others are having similar issues. i'd love to have this working asap.

well, i have two external dvd drives, and both are firewire only. and neither one works anymore. it's quite a bummer. i'd love to see them working again. i kind of need them. i sure didn't expect this to be something that stopped working in snow leopard.

  • Idvd6 to burn on an external dvd burner

I am running Osx 10.3.9 and have idvd4. Unfortunatly i have an external dvd burner and idvd4 will not burn to this. Will idvd6 work on my system as Ive heard this works with an external burner.

    Hi chadredford:
Yes-iMovie 6 would allow you to natively export to an external burner. Would your system work? Better read these to help make up your mind:

  • Bought a used imac, need to wipe but have external dvd

I bought a used imac that was not wiped clean. I want to start fresh and reinstall the original operating system (which I have the disks for).
However, the built in dvd player does not work, and I have an external DVD player. Will I be able to use this? My concern is that when I wipe the hard drive, it will lose the drivers for the external player. I'm not techie enough to figure out what to do next if that happened, and I don't want to have to make a trip to the apple store (very far away).
Also, is there a way to tell if the install discs that I was given are the right ones for this machine? I also don't want to get stuck finding out that I have the wrong discs and then have no operating system anymore.
    Thanks...

My concern is that when I wipe the hard drive, it will lose the drivers for the external player.
If you can boot from a disc in the external drive, it should be OK.
Also, is there a way to tell if the install discs that I was given are the right ones for this machine?
Start the Installer. If it doesn't show an error message, you have the right disc.

  • External dvd error

I have an external DVD drive connected to my mac. I am burning my IPHOTO library to DVD. Everytimte I burn a DVD, it take a really long time to complete. And I get this error...
The disc did not verify correctly and is unreliable. Because this disc is unreliable, discard and try using a new blank disc. ( Error code 0x80020063).
I tried the disc and it seems to work fine.
Any ideas why I am getting this meesage.
    the disc's are TDK +R
I have e BENQ dvd burner that I pulled from my old PC and put it in an external enclosure and connected it via USB.

There are a couple of causes for this error:
Bad media. try another brand, such as Verbatim, and try burning at a lower speed. Memorex and 16X can both cause problems.
Data changing while the disk is being burned, so the verify pass fails. e.g. if you use iPhoto while burning the disk.
In either case you should not trust the disk, even if it seems OK.

  • Burning a DVD from iMovie in  OSX 10.8.5

Hi I want to make a DVD from a movie I have made in iMovie.
The instructions tell me to send it to iDVD but I believe OSX does not have iDVD. Any suggestions on how I can get this movie copied to a DVD please? (I have an external DVD drive and Macbook Air with OSX v 10.8.5).
I have a granny waiting to view this weding movie that I made so it needs to be burnt to DVD rather than playing on a TV via Apple TV! Thank you

Apple's iDVD app has been discontinued so the only way to burn a DVD is third party software or an older copy of the iLife '09 suite of apps.

  • Install windows 8.1 on windows 7without external DVD-reader? - thinkpad Yoga

    Hi!
Just entered the community as i recently bought a lenovo thinkpad S1 yoga. i am very satisfied with it overall, but right now there is one thing that bothers me. It came preinstalled with windows 7. Now, i did get recovery CDs with windows 8, but i do not currently have an external DVD to make use of them. Now, my first thought was that there must be a way of installing windows 8 without the discs, because of the windows 8 sticker at the bottom of the Unit that basically says it has (had) windows 8 at some point, but i havent yet found a solution.
Would anyone know how to move on from this point? except from bying the external dvd-reader and use the CDs?
    cheers

not 100% but don't believe bootcamp support that or even if windows itself does
thing is that if the usb drivers are loaded later then the bootcamp come into play the bootcamp bootloader can't detect the hd

  • External DVD drive not working with Lombard G3 333

I have an external DVD drive that worked when I had 10.4, but had to reformat HD and now only have 10.3.9, and now the DVD drive does not work with DVDs, it will work with CDs and CDR media, but not with DVD media. My Lombard did not come with DVD originally and I am using a PC Card (Macintosh PowerBook DVD-Video PC Card For PowerBook G3 Series) and it worked before with 10.4, but not with 10.3, any ideas? Also have tried with 9.x, no go either. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, would it be difficult to add a DVD logic board to my Lombard?
    Joey

    xamdu,
I am reading and replying to this post after first replying to your other post, so a few of my previous comments are redundant.
Regarding the FireWire(?) USB 2.0(?) DVD drive: It is possible Tiger supported your DVD drive but Panther does not. I would give PatchBurn for Panther a try:
    http://patchburn.de/download.html
If the above is unsuccessful, take a look at this workaround:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040330171655882
You can swap logic boards but it does require a lot of disassembly.
Since no version of OSX supports Apple DVD Player, I am assuming you have a third-party player like VLC installed to watch movies. If this is the case, the DVD Decoder PC card is not necessary. If booted to 9.x, you of course will need the decoder PC card but I did not know 9.x's Apple DVD Player supported external drives.
