I have an imac 10.5.8 how do i upgrade to a better osx

Hi i would like to know how to upgrade my computer so i can eventully then put snow leopard onto it but at the moment everything i try to download says i dont have the right software to upgrade. please can you suggest anything thanks

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and in the UK:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

I have a pre-2008 Mac PRO how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion? On the Apple's site on upgrading (http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/), I see that "Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)" is required for the upgrade. What's up with that?
Will upgrading of the GPU do the trick?
I'm curretly on Snow Leopard, will I be limited to Lion?

  • HT4972 I no longer have a PC or Mac.  How can I upgrade to iOS 5?

I no longer have a PC or Mac.  How can I upgrade to iOS 5?

Your iPhone can be updated to the latest firmware in an Apple Store  but you would lose all the information off your phone.
If your happy to do this, may I recommend backing up to iCloud once you are on iOS 5.1.1 and then you will be able to perform future upgrades over wifi and restore your phone from your iCloud account should you ever need to in the future.
The other option might be to back your iPhone upto a friends computer without syncing and this might be the only way you could restore everything back onto your updated phone.
Also download apps to back up your contacts online so that you can restore them also after the update.
May I suggest Contacts Backup app which enables you to back up your contacts by email, Dropbox or via USB.
    Hope this helps.

I have OS X 10.5.8, how do I upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion?

As Ralph Landry1 mentions, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first (so you can access the App Store), but if your Mac qualifies, you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion without installing Lion first > Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

I have a iMac 20 intel/512 mb from 2007 .i want to instal OSX Mountain Lion, but i have a OSX 10.4.1. I need minimal OSX 10.6.8 or more! What i have to do?
    Processor 2 GHz Core Duo. 2 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 .

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
If yours is truly a Core Duo then it cannot run Mountain Lion. Snow Leopard is the latest you can install.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

I have an IMAC and purchased OS X Lion to upgrade from the APP store, and launched the software for downloading, and I have been waiting on this for an hour, and it still says it's downloading? What do I do next?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The OS X Lion installer takes more than 4 GB of space, so it is normal for most Internet connections to take the download more than an hour.
If you want to see the download progress, open the Mac App Store and go to Purchases.
Before upgrading, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Hi, I have a iMac Tiger running slowly, how can I make it run faster?

Hi, I have a iMac Tiger 10.4.11 running slowly, how can I make it run faster?

Look at what is happenning with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
Click on the CPU tab on the lower half of the window to see how much time you are using.
Click on System Memory to get statistics on memory usage.  You should have some free memory.
When you have lots of page outs more memory will be helpful.  My entry for entry for Page ins/outs is:
    Page ins/outs: 29163/0
Notice I have 0 pageouts which says that I am not using my harddrive for extra memory space.  Thus, I have enough memory.
Activity Monitor has a neat feature where it can display a dynamic dock icon.  In Activity Monitor View > Dock icon > Show cpu history.
"Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor :"

  • I have a imac 7,1 and i NEED to upgrade.

I have already paid for leopard to download for use on another system. How can i upgrade my imac from 10.5?! My safari and chrome dont work correctly because of some software issues because i am so far behind. How do i download?!

You will have to puchase the Snow Leopard DVD directly from Apple's online store. A link to the US Store is:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If I misread your intent and you already have this then install it and then download and install the 10.6.8 update combo from:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399
Then run Software Update and install any other updates Apple suggests. Finally backup your system completely and test the backup. Once you have done this then navigate to the Mac App Store and download Mavericks assuming your system has at least the minimum system requirements. I would STRONGLY recommend 4GB or more of RAM,  a 7.1 machine can accomodate 6GB, I would recommend that if you need a RAM upgrade. You can use reliable venors such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial.
If you are not aware of the minimum system requirements for Mavericks  you can find them at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842
    Good luck!

  • I have a 10.6.8 version, how do I upgrade to 10.7?

I have a 10.6.8 version on my mac book pro, how do I upgrade to 10.7?
plus I have no Icloud on the System Preferences, my Icloud works with itunes only... not with Iphoto ... why?

Oh and make sure your Mac meets these requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Also PPC programs will no longer work on your computer under Lion so check here for compatability.

I have a iPad with 4.2, How do I update? I have no update software button. I need to update to get newsstand.

You only have the software update button once you are running at least iOS 5 on the iPad. You need to update with iTunes on your computer first. You must be running the latest version of iTunes on the computer as well.
This article explains how to update your iPad.

  • I have the Imac restore disk but how I install it now?

When I put the disk into the computer and start it up, I just get a white screen with an apple.  Nothing else happens.

I was ready to give up. I had spoken to Apple Care and they thought it may be that the bluetooth keyboard wasn't being picked up by the computer since the computer was now a complete blank slate.  So I ran out and got a USB keyboard and I still could not get it working.
I was unable to even eject the disk to find out what recovery one it was.
But then I read the last two messages and did the Command & R and it's repairing my drive.  Thank you guys so much.
