I don't think it's necessary at all. We were buying an ipad for my husband as a gift. We waited, though, until the new ipad came out so I could compare it to ipad 2. I got on this forum, and watched the list of complaints and concerns grow (pretty much like the recent ios 6 release and how this foum has been bombarded with questions and complaints.)
I learned that many(five figures + viewers and/or responders to ques. on this forum)  had complaints about the heat from the back while holding it, the shorter battery life, yellow hues on screen, and eye strain. I personally checked out many in stores that were set up as samples. Sometimes they were a little hot, and sometimes very, very, hot to the point that I would be very uncomfortable holding one.
So we went with an ipad 2 64 gb. and our younger son then bought one for college, and he's very happy he did. He had planned on getting the new one, but was happier, given the concerns of the new one, to buy an ipad2 64 gb also.
We don't care about the retina display at all (the reason for the shorter battery life and heat.) We don't need gps as all of us can get that on our cell phones, and we don't need to chat with Siri so she'll do things for us.
We aren't early adopters. We don't always need the newest and best. We like what works with the least amount of problems, and the ipad 2 came through for us.
