Thanks Carolyn, but I was backing up using iCloud to a friends laptop since my computer couldn't get iTunes 10.5. I realized all my stuff syncs onto his. Oops! I bought the new Apple iMac, and it's in the mail. When it comes I want to start backing up docs, music, photos, etc. Is it possible to switch computers?

Some things to try first:

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

If you are sure that you have checked every setting for sound and still have no sound at all - try this first.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If you by chance do have sound in the music app, you may have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

If you really need to upgrade you can save a bit of money and get an older version than the ipad Air.
First, you can sell your ipad 1 to places like gazelle.com, cashforyourmac.com, sellyour mac.com, or many others out there. The sites I listed give you cash. At this point gazelle.com is giving $70.00 for any ipad 1 in 'good' condition. And cashforyourmac will give you $25.00 over what gazelle.com or sellyourmac.com offers you. Shipping is free.
Then, with that money, go the the Apple online certified refurbished store. As an example, a new 64gb Air costs $699.00. A refurbed 4th gen 64gb costs $529.00 and a 3rd gen 64gb costs $499.00. Personally, I'd skip the 3rd gen. So if you buy a 4th gen 64gb at $529.00 minus what you can get from a sale to above, you can get an ipad 4 64gb for just over $430.00, a savings of savings of about $270.00. (A new 32gb Air is $599.00, a 4th gen 32gb is $449.00, and a 3rd gen 32gb is not on the site right now.) Google it and check if you can get better offers anywhere else. While both the iPhone and the iPad use an Apple dock cable for charging, the iPad wants a 1100 mA charger, and the iPhone charger's a 500 mA charger. USB ports on newer Apple computers can switch into 1100 mA mode, but your average computer is going to put out no more than 500 mA and, possibly, quite less (for example, an un-powered USB hub will only put out 100 mA or so, and an iPad won't charge off that). The iPad will say "not charging" if it is trickle-charging (receiving less than 1000 mA of power).
If the problem persists when using the 1100 mA iPad charger, you need to take it to an Apple store and have it serviced or replaced. Bring the iPad charger that you received with the iPad as it may be that the charger is defective and not putting out 1100 mA.
If the problem is that it charges slow because it's being connected to iPhone chargers or PCs or older Macs, then it's not a problem with the iPad. It's charging, it just takes a long time because you are using an under-powered charger.

If you have owned the device, as in purchased from Apple, less than a year then there will be no charge to repair, or most likely, replace the device. If you have had the device more than a year you will be charged an out of warranty cost for replacement ($219 I think) and that is much cheaper than a new device. If you have Applecare+ then you have an additional year of coverage and the replacement will be $49 or $79 depending on when you got the Applecare.

I have an iPad 2 that is updated and using 6.0.1. It is connecting to my wifi just fine. I just purchased a 4th generation iPad. It shows it is connected to the same wifi, same strong signal, but it will not work. HELP!!!

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Upon returning to the range, the Ipad has trouble connecting to the network. (30 seconds) The Ipad will eventually connect to the network, but by this time the driver is frustrated. I have moved the antenna to within 20' of where the vehicle comes to a stop. My Iphone does not have a problem connecting or reconnecting when used side by side with the Ipad. Both the Ipad and Iphone have Otter box covers. Has anyone run into this problem or have any suggestions?

30 seconds to reconnect to a WiFi network is not unusual, especially in an environment where other radio signals on similar frequencies are present. Sorry about that.
You might get better times by letting the WiFi base station pick another channel. But you might not.
