To troubleshoot display brightness issues the following article provides 2 key steps:
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

Of note is the following:
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Display does not adjust brightness automatically
The ambient light sensor brightens the display when using the iPhone in brightly lit environments, and dims the display in low light. To test this sensor, do the following:
If the iPhone is in a protective case, remove it from the case. If there is a protective film on the display, remove the film.
Verify that the Auto-Brightness setting (Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper) is set to ON, and that the Brightness level is set near the middle of the slider.
Press the Home button to return to the Home screen and then press the Sleep/Wake button to lock the iPhone.
In a bright environment, cover the top third of the iPhone to block the light, then press the Sleep/Wake button or the Home button to wake the phone. Slide the slider to unlock the phone.
Notice the brightness of the screen and application icons; they should be somewhat dimmed.
Remove the cover from the top of the display and in a few moments the display should get brighter.
If these steps do not resolve your issue please refer to the "Issue not resolved" section for your next step.

Assuming you are using the current version of iTunes (11,2,2), open iTunes, click "Preferences" under the leftmost entry on iTunes' menu, then choose "Devices".

If it is just the back glass panel that is broken they are very easily replaced at home and a lot cheaper too. The two screws at the bottom of the phone either side of the dock connector need unscrewing and then the back sliding up a little and popping off, then put a new one on and slid it back down and put the screws back in and hey presto!
Technically speaking this will void your warranty and probably not supposed to mention it on here but a replacement is at least $149 (depending on which model you have) whereas the new back on eBay is $10.45 for the iPhone 4 replacement back and screwdrivers or $11.53 for the 4S replacement with screwdrivers -

I have two iphones with different phone numbers that I use. I have one of them set up on icloud now, but do not know how to set up my second device on icloud. To move one of the phones to a different iCloud account (if that's what you want to do), go to Settings>iCloud and turn all synced data to Off. When prompted, choose to keep the data on your iPhone. After everything is off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. This will delete the account from the phone but not from iCloud so the other phone will not be effected. Then set up a new iCloud account with a different Apple ID and turn iCloud syncing in Settings>iCloud back to On. When prompted, choose Merge. This will upload the data to the new iCloud account.
You will then have to go to icloud.com and sign into each iCloud account separately and delete any unwanted data that you don't want on the phone syncing with each account. -

I have an iPhone 4 (IOS 4.3.1) and it was synced and backed up today.
I wanted to upgrade to the latest ios on iTunes (today's date is 3rd Jan 2013), it seemed to download ok (it took about 30 minutes or so), but when it tried to update onto the iPhone (I think this was what it was doing!) I got an error message that had code 3014 in it. Nowhere on Apple's website can I find a way to resolve this error code.
I then thought I would just try again from the beginning, but I then got an error message saying that if I continued I would lose all the contents on my iPhone so I cancelled it as I don't want to lose everything on my phone.
Can anyone help me as I am not very good at technical things and I really want to upgrade the ios on my iPhone without losing all the data I have on there already. An idiots guide would be great.

Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
Test restoring while connected to a known-good network. -
I have an iPhone 4s iOs 5.1.1,( I know I need an update!) I want to update it to iOs 7, if I've backed up to iCloud will my contacts, pictures and text messages be saved and able to be restored if lost? I recently backed up to the iCloud as recently as this morning at 2AM.
OCD with good reason
With a second backup, as you now have, you are well protected. The update makes a backup to use for restoring after the install but with another you should be in great shape.
Just take you time and be patient, these can take a while to complete depending on server load, connection speed, etc. -

Are you sure you have a 3GS and not a 3G? The 3G cannot be updated to iOS5. What version are you on now?... Settings > General > About > Version
